Our prayer：
Heavenly Father,
we come before You in awe of Your holiness, power, and ultimate justice. Your Word reminds us of the serious reality of sin and pride, mirroring how Edom fell when they trusted in their own strength rather than in You.
LORD God, search our hearts today. Strip away any false pride, arrogance, or misplaced confidence in the temporary things of this world. Where we have built our nests high in our own strength, humble us and draw us back to complete dependence on Your grace.
Thank you that while Your judgments are true, Your mercies are new every morning through Jesus Christ. Protect us from hardening our hearts. Help us to walk in obedience, humility, and reverent fear of Your holy name.

We join you in this humbling prayer and we say amen to your cry for God to search our hearts and strip away false pride.

We love how you have anchored this prayer in Jeremiah 49:18, As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities, says Yahweh, no man will dwell there, neither will any son of man live therein. This is a sobering word spoken against Edom, a people who trusted in the high, rocky strongholds where they made their nests and believed no one could bring them down. Their pride in their own strength and security became their downfall, just as Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown for their grievous sin and arrogance. God shows us here that He does not take pride lightly, for pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18.

Your prayer echoes the psalmist who prayed, Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24. We need this searching daily, because our hearts can so quickly build confidence in temporary things, in wealth, position, ability, or even our own righteousness, rather than in Christ alone.

We are thankful you lifted up Jesus as the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for He is the Word of God made flesh. In Him alone we have mercy in the face of judgment. As you prayed, His mercies are new every morning. It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23. While God's judgments are true and holy, His grace is greater for those who humble themselves before Him, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6.

Heavenly Father, we come before Your throne in awe of Your holiness, power, and perfect justice, and we thank You for Your mercy through Jesus Christ. We ask You to search us and know us, to reveal and strip away any false pride, arrogance, or misplaced confidence in the temporary things of this world. Forgive us where we have built our nests high in our own strength and wisdom. Humble us, Lord, and draw us back to complete dependence on Your grace. Keep us from hardening our hearts when we hear Your voice. Teach us to walk in obedience, humility, and reverent fear of Your holy name, and to feed daily on Jesus, the true Bread of Heaven and the living Word. Thank you for bringing this humble prayer before the Lord. We hear a real desire not to trust in your own strength but to stay dependent on His grace, and we thank God for that work in you.

One thing that has helped us is remembering humility is not thinking harshly of ourselves or being timid, but simply living with an honest sense of our need for God and a willingness to put others before ourselves. It grows not by trying harder on our own, but by quiet honesty before God, repentance when He shows us pride, and often through the hard places that remind us we cannot carry life alone.

A simple next step that many find helpful is to take a few unhurried minutes in the next day or two to ask the Lord to show you one area where you may be leaning on your own strength, and then invite someone who knows you well and loves you to share honestly how they see pride or self reliance showing up. Listening without defending can open the door for real growth.

Father, we come to You together and ask You to keep searching us and making us gentle and dependent on You. Strip away what is false in us and teach us to walk in humility and obedience. Cover us with Your mercy in Christ and keep our hearts soft toward You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer rightly echoes the warning of the prophet and is most needful for every heart. The Lord showed to Edom, as He did to Sodom, that when pride lifts itself high and builds its nest in self confidence, destruction is not far behind. As it has been well said, when destruction walks through the land it casts its shadow, and it is in the shape of pride, and when honor visits a man's house it casts its shadow before it, and it is in the fashion of humility.

Pride has its seat in the heart, and its consequence is destruction. There is nothing into which the heart of man so easily falls, and yet there is no vice more frequently and solemnly condemned in Scripture. Therefore your petition that God would search the heart and strip away false pride is a prayer that God delights to answer. Seek of Him the gift of true humility, for humility must be genuine. It is not a thing that lives only in the face, but has its throne in the heart. It is to serve the Lord with all humility of mind, before the act, during the service, and when all is done, remembering that we are mortal and by nature depraved creatures wholly dependent upon grace.

And thank God that while His judgments are true, His mercies are indeed new every morning through Jesus Christ. Yet let us be careful to distinguish a carnal repentance from that holy and healthy repentance which is worked in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit. True repentance gives God glory. It makes us weep and abhor our past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and it makes us avoid present sin because of the love of God who died for us. It looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only, and it yields works meet for repentance and lasts beyond a momentary trembling.

May the Lord grant you such a repentance unto life, and with it a hearty obedience. For obedience is the highest practical courage, and the exactness of obedience is the essence of obedience. The world says we must not be too precise, but the child of God desires to turn not to the right hand nor to the left, but to observe to do according to all that the Lord has commanded. Such an obedience is deeply spiritual and indicates the truest sincerity, for the sincere soul seeks to know the Lord's will that he may keep it, and when he feels he has not kept it, he goes with holy repentance to the foot of the cross to find pardon and sanctifying grace to keep it better for the future.

I join my own prayer with yours, that the Lord would keep you from hardening your heart, humble you where you have trusted in your own strength, and draw you into complete dependence upon His grace, that you may walk in reverent fear, in humility, and in cheerful, exact obedience to Christ. In the keeping of His commandments there is great reward. May He keep you and establish you in His love until the end.

Your prayer is good and right before God, and I join my voice with yours in it. You have asked the Lord to search the heart and to strip away false pride and misplaced confidence in temporary things, and this is exactly what we must all ask continually.

Scripture shows us why this prayer is so necessary. As you recalled from Jeremiah, Edom trusted in her high dwelling and in her own strength, building her nest on high, and was brought low. The prophet holds up Sodom and Gomorrah as a warning that God is holy and His judgment against settled pride and sin is true. Pride is indeed the fountain of all wickedness, and even when a person seems to stand at the summit, pride can cause him to go down with the loss of all, as with the Pharisee. Humility, on the other hand, is the mother of virtues and the groundwork of all that is good. Christ Himself said, blessed are the poor in spirit.

Therefore we should not pray for humility in word only, but with all humility of mind, in action and in truth, toward God and toward one another. There are many who appear lowly before the great but are high toward the lowly, but that is not true humility. True humility is to humble ourselves willingly when we could exalt ourselves, casting ourselves wholly upon the grace of God and not upon our own strength, wealth, or wisdom.

You also prayed that God would keep us from hardening our hearts, and this is wise. There is a repentance that is real and a sorrow that is not. Esau sought with tears but found no place of repentance because his tears were of pride and wrath, not of a changed heart that turns from sin. David, when he sinned, washed his bed with tears and mourned as if the sin were fresh, and his repentance was proven by his life afterward. So let us ask for that true repentance which is accompanied by obedience, reverent fear, and a daily dependence on Christ.

I thank God with you that while His judgments are true, His mercies are new every morning through Jesus Christ alone, in whom alone we have forgiveness and life. May He answer your prayer by revealing any high place in the heart, humbling us, and drawing us back to complete dependence on His grace.

Let us pray together: Heavenly Father, search us and try us. Remove from us all arrogance and false confidence in the things of this world that pass away. Give us poverty of spirit and a humble mind, that we may walk in obedience and in reverent fear of Your holy name, trusting not in ourselves but in Your mercy through Jesus Christ Your Son.
