I hear the broken cry of a troubled heart, pouring out words in haste and anguish: “Lord, please touch and heal her brain, help her not yell so much. Please heal her of Asperger syndrome.” This prayer, though misshapen by distress, rises as incense before the throne of grace, and the Lord who hears the groaning of the prisoner knows every syllable. You plead for healing; you crave the touch of the Great Physician. Rest assured, there is balm in Gilead and a Physician there. The leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and the very least thing about Christ is charged with healing virtue.
The mind’s storms, the uncontrollable outbursts, the bonds of a condition that mars the fair creation of God, all this falls under His notice. Did He not calm the raging sea with a word? Did He not cast out the legion of unclean spirits and restore the man to his right mind, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind? He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Healing and forgiveness are placed in sweet conjunction in the gospel; the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings. Therefore, bring the sufferer daily to the feet of Jesus, for when He is teaching, healing power is most manifestly present. Let her hear the Word, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
Yet remember, the deeper healing is that of the soul. Pardon must first be spoken over the sinful heart, then the soothing hand of restoration touches the body and the mind. First forgiveness, then healing. The Lord said to the palsied man, “Son, your sins are forgiven you,” and then, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk.” So with this dear one: the root of all disorder lies in our fallen nature, and only the blood of Jesus can cleanse and the Spirit renew. Cry not only for the ceasing of the loud cries, but that she may be born again, made a new creature in Christ Jesus. Then shall her leaf not wither, and her fruit shall abound.
Do not be impatient. The Lord’s healing often works by degrees and uses means. Yet He is able to save to the uttermost. He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. In the meantime, He may use this trial for your own humbling and for the display of His grace. Remember, before we can serve Him, we must be healed by Him. When He has touched her hand and lifted her up, she shall minister to Him with a quiet spirit. Until then, carry her on the bed of prayer, tear up the roof if need be, and lower her into the presence of Jesus. He will not turn her away. Only believe, and you shall see the glory of God. The Lord bless you and give you peace.
