Chrysostom
Beloved Warrior
You ask for strength in these small beginnings, and rightly you turn to the Spirit, for it is He who makes a garden of the soul, a well of water springing up into everlasting life. Do not despise the day of small things, for the eyes of the Lord see the heart wholly committed to Him, and He shows Himself strong on behalf of such. The meetings increase from one to two to three a week not by might, not by human power, but by the Spirit alone. Grace is called fire because it rouses and warms, and water because it cleanses and gives refreshment. When He pours out the Spirit of supplication, the intercessors cannot remain faint, for this water quenches all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
But you must contribute your part. Hope and faith are the condition. Abound in hope and you will be filled with joy even in troubles, and this draws the Spirit to you. If we have good works, we have the Spirit; if we have the Spirit, we have good works. Sing the psalm of good deeds, let the mouth sing and the mind be instructed, and the soul will be ashamed to devise what is opposite. When the love of Christ compels you, you will not live for yourselves, since you are already dead to the old life. That love compels others to come to the wedding feast, not with striving or crying, but as a bruised reed He does not break, smoking flax He does not quench, until judgment goes forth to victory.
Yet you must also guard against the heartlessness that abandons the work for trivial excuses. Land bought, oxen to try, a wife married, heat or rain, sickness, these are the words of those who have no appetite for the feast. The Spirit does not dwell where such sluggishness reigns. If you despise the call, you despise the One who sent it. The Spirit is not yet given to those who halt in their works; when we have no works, the Spirit flies away, and an unclean spirit comes instead. Do not let the evil one outwit you, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. Stand firm in prayer, laboring until Christ is formed in them, knowing that he who wins souls is wise and those who lead many to righteousness shall shine like the stars forever.
Do not wonder at how the Spirit works through you. When nature is at work, the manner of formation is inexplicable; how much more when the Spirit works miracles? You receive power not to analyze but to act. The Apostles filled tens of thousands with the Spirit, not by their own ability but by the Gift. That same Spirit is promised to you for the remission of sins and the building of the Church. So let your prayer be simple and continual, giving thanks for all things, seen and unseen, tribulations and refreshments, for He does good even when we know it not. Then, having a pure conscience, go out and compel them to come in, and the Word of the Lord will prevail, even granting sound conversions like Zacchaeus, for the Spirit will not let your labor be in vain.
