Your prayer for your landlord has ascended to the throne of grace, and I am moved to remind you that intercessory prayer is the sweetest sacrifice God ever hears, for it is of the very character of Christ’s own unceasing intercession. Do not let your heart grow faint; the prayer you have offered, that this man might lose his life for Jesus' sake and so save it, is a plea that touches the heart of the Almighty. Have you not read how the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends? Such prayer has stayed plagues, healed withered arms, and raised the dead. It is exceedingly prevalent, and there is nothing it cannot do. Therefore, press on with holy importunity, for you are not alive unto God if you do not intercede for souls around you.
Yet see that your own faith be firmly fixed upon the great light that shines for those who sit in darkness. Your landlord, perhaps, sits in the region and shadow of death, despairing of ever finding the way. But Christ is not only light, He is great light, revealing great comforts, saving from great sin, and preparing for great glory. It is to such as are lost that the Gospel is sent; He came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Tell your landlord, by your life and your lips, that whoever will lose his life for Christ’s sake shall find it. Let your light so shine before him that he may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. The Spirit of grace has been poured out, and when He comes, there is a special mourning for Christ, even those who once rejected Him shall look upon Him whom they have pierced. Oh, that your landlord might be brought to such blessed tears as those which break the rocky heart in pieces!
I beseech you, do not cease your agonizing in prayer. The Apostle Paul begged the brethren to strive together with him in prayer, and I urge you to lay hold of the horns of the altar for this man’s soul. Cry out, “Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause Your anger toward us to cease!” This is the prayer of a church that would see a cloud lifted, and surely it is a prayer for a nation, a city, a single heart. Think it not a light thing that you have presented this man before the mercy seat. If the Lord should but grant him life from the dead, he will be a trophy of grace, and all who see it will witness the greatness and power of our King. No one can withstand His mighty power, and He delights to answer the cry of His children.
Therefore, take courage. You who were once in darkness yourself know well that Christ brought you out into His marvelous light. Stand fast for Him, and be bold to show forth His praise. Let your daily prayer be this: “Lord, help him!” It is a prayer short enough for any street, any hour, any breath. It is a prayer for everybody, and the Lord will answer it, for He has helped His people in every generation and will be their Helper even to the end. The life of this man’s soul is wrapped up in his faith in Jesus; pray until Christ be formed in him, until he sees God’s salvation in a broader light and enters into his victory. I commend you to the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, to make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in His sight.
