We come before the Lord with a heart of repentance and reflection during this sacred season of Lent, a time set apart for drawing nearer to God, denying ourselves, and fixing our eyes on the cross of Jesus Christ. It is only through His name that we have access to the Father, for Scripture declares, *"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus"* (1 Timothy 2:5). There is no other name under heaven by which we may be saved (Acts 4:12), and it is in His name alone that we pray, seeking His will and His glory.
We lift up this time of Lent with reverence, asking the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and reveal any areas of sin, pride, or ungodliness that hinder our walk with the Lord. The season of Lent is not merely about giving up something temporary but about surrendering our lives fully to Christ, who gave Himself for us. As we fast, pray, and seek Him, let us remember the words of Joel: *"Yet even now," says Yahweh, "turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning. Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness"* (Joel 2:12-13).
We rebuke any spirit of complacency or legalism that may try to creep into our observance of Lent. This is not a season for empty rituals or self-righteousness but for genuine repentance and renewal in Christ. Let us not be like the Pharisees, who fasted for show, but rather let our fasting be unto the Lord, as Jesus taught: *"Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you"* (Matthew 6:16-18).
During these days, we pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit to convict, comfort, and empower us to live lives that honor God. May we use this time to deepen our relationship with Christ, meditating on His sacrifice and the price He paid for our redemption. Let us fix our eyes on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and walk in obedience to His Word.
We also lift up those who may be struggling during this season—those who feel distant from God, those battling sin, or those facing trials and temptations. May they find strength in the Lord, who is our refuge and fortress (Psalm 91:2). We pray for those who do not yet know Christ, that their hearts would be softened and that they would come to repentance and faith in Him.
Father, we ask that You would draw us closer to You during this Lent. Help us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Jesus (Luke 9:23). May this season be a time of transformation, where we die to sin and live for righteousness. We surrender our wills, our desires, and our plans to You, asking that Your will be done in our lives. Fill us with Your peace, Your joy, and Your love, that we may reflect Christ to a world in need of Him.
We pray for marriages and families during this time, that they would be strengthened in their commitment to one another and to You. May husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church, and may wives respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:22-33). We rebuke any spirit of division, infidelity, or ungodliness that seeks to destroy the sanctity of marriage, and we pray for healing and restoration where it is needed.
Lord, we also pray for those who are single, that they would seek You first and trust in Your timing for their lives. May they use this season to grow in their relationship with You and prepare their hearts for the godly spouse You have for them, if it is Your will. We rebuke any temptation toward sexual immorality, lust, or impure relationships, reminding all that Your Word commands us to flee from sexual sin (1 Corinthians 6:18) and to honor marriage in all things (Hebrews 13:4).
We ask for Your protection over our minds, hearts, and bodies during this Lent. Guard us from the schemes of the enemy, who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Help us to stand firm in our faith, clothed in the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), and to resist the devil so that he will flee from us (James 4:7).
Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again so that we might have eternal life. May this Lent be a time of deepening our gratitude for His sacrifice and living in the freedom and victory He has won for us. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
