Learning 2 languages at the same time - repost

I have no exact reason to learn those languages (I have at least 1 friend who speaks ukrainian & 1 who speaks spanish, but they speak English), but God has brought me on a journey to do so. Maybe He wants me to spread the gospel in those languages. I mean I have done that with my content creating

I don't know how to learn these languages, although I am learning them like how a child would, but it's a very hard, long journey. Please pray that in God's perfect timing I will be fluent in both languages.

As of the recent dog situation, I was listening to Spanish or Ukrainian less & putting less effort into learning the languages that God may have put me up to learn for a reason. But now I'm back into it.

How do I immerse myself in the languages, while putting God first? I do listen to audio Bible, I read the Bible in the languages. I should start praying in the languages again though.

How do I immerse myself in the languages like a kid would learn a language? I don't really write in either language, so I need to start doing that. But, I do speak, listen, & read. Although, I sometimes don't speak as much in Spanish as I do in Ukrainian. I also listen a lot more than all the other things.

The Lord often calls us to things that stretch us beyond our own understanding, and your pursuit of Ukrainian and Spanish is no exception. It is beautiful that you are seeking to use these languages to spread the gospel, for "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!" (Romans 10:15). We stand with you in prayer and encouragement as you press forward in obedience.

First, we must address the foundation of your journey. You mentioned God has brought you on this path, but we want to gently remind you that all things must be rooted in the name of Jesus Christ. It is only through Him that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If your desire to learn these languages is to glorify God, then it must be done in the name of Jesus, with prayer and dependence on the Holy Spirit. Have you surrendered this calling to Him, asking for His guidance and strength each step of the way? If not, we encourage you to do so, for apart from Christ, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

Now, regarding your question about immersion while keeping God first, this is a wise and necessary balance. Learning as a child does is a wonderful approach, for children learn through constant exposure, repetition, and play. But as believers, our immersion must first be in God’s Word and presence. Jesus said, "But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33). So, as you surround yourself with these languages, ensure that your heart remains fixed on Christ. Listen to the Bible in these languages, pray in them, and even sing worship songs in them. Let your learning be an act of worship.

To immerse yourself like a child, you are already on the right path by listening, speaking, and reading. Writing is indeed another crucial step, try journaling your prayers or thoughts in these languages, even if it starts with simple sentences. Children learn by doing, so speak aloud even if you make mistakes. Find language partners (preferably fellow believers) who can converse with you, correct you, and encourage you. Watch children’s programs or read children’s books in these languages, as they use simple, repetitive vocabulary. Consistency is key, so set aside dedicated time each day for focused practice, but also weave the languages into your daily life, label items in your home, think in the language, or narrate your actions as you go about your day.

We also want to gently rebuke the season where you pulled back from this calling. When God places a task before us, we must not grow weary or distracted, for "he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). It is easy to let life’s circumstances, like your recent dog situation, derail us, but we must press on with perseverance. We encourage you to guard your heart against discouragement or frustration, for learning a language is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate small victories, and trust that God is faithful to complete what He has started in you.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this dear brother/sister to You. Lord, You have placed a unique calling on their life to learn these languages for Your glory, and we thank You for their obedience and desire to serve You. We ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, granting them wisdom, discipline, and joy as they pursue this journey. Father, help them to immerse themselves in these languages while keeping their heart fixed on You. Let their learning be an act of worship, and may their fluency come in Your perfect timing.

Lord, we pray against any spirit of discouragement, frustration, or distraction that would seek to hinder this work. Strengthen their resolve, and remind them daily that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens them (Philippians 4:13). Surround them with godly language partners and resources that will aid their learning. Most of all, Father, use this skill for Your kingdom, may they boldly proclaim the gospel in these languages, leading many to salvation in Jesus’ name.

We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Think of language learning less like an exam to cram for and more like training for a long race. A marathon runner doesn't become ready by sprinting once a week or waiting for inspiration, she builds the habit, step by step, day after day. The same is true for your soul and for your tongue. You already listen to Scripture, read it, and sometimes speak. That foundation is solid, even when life (and a needy dog) interrupts. The key is simply not to stop, trusting that all those small, consistent efforts are quietly adding up in God's perfect timing.

You mentioned that you don't write much yet, and that you'd like to pray in the languages more. What if those two needs became one practice? Each day, try writing just a sentence or two as a prayer, perhaps in a notebook, one page for Spanish and one for Ukrainian. It doesn't need to be eloquent; even a child's scrawl of "Jesus, stay near" in a new language is precious. That small act joins spiritual discipline and language immersion, training your heart and mind together. Over time, you'll find you have a little written record of God's faithfulness, in the very words He may one day use to reach your friends.

We're praying that the Holy Spirit Himself will be your patient Teacher, that He'll keep your motivation steady, and that when fluency comes, in His timing, you'll be ready to open your mouth with love for whoever is ready to hear.

Lord Jesus, we lift up our friend who is giving these languages to You. Give strength for the daily practice, joy in the learning, and a clear sense of Your leading. The work which perplexes you is no accident. When the Spirit plants a desire so deep that it returns after every winter, you may be sure it is a heavenly seed. The Lord has a use for these two languages, though your eyes cannot yet trace the pattern. Perhaps it is for the souls of those friends, or for strangers you have never met. Content yourself to trust the Architect’s plan even while you handle only the rough stones. What you call a hard and long journey is but the Lord’s method of driving you to Himself. Learning as a child learns is the very way of grace, little by little, listening long before speaking, making many mistakes, yet never ceasing. A child does not master the tongue by study alone; he hears it in the marketplace, at the hearth, in the songs of the household. So immerse your ears. Let the Audio Bible play upon your heart like rain upon tilled soil. Read the written Word aloud, even poorly, and pray with whatever syllables you possess, for the Holy Spirit perfects the groans of His children. Writing, too, will fix the words upon the mind; but the greatest schoolmaster is daily use. Seek out your friends and speak with them, not waiting until you are polished, for the roughest ore is still ore.

Yet the chief caution is this: keep Christ ever before you. It is a deadly snare to become so immersed in vocabularies that you neglect the soul’s communion. These languages are but tools; the gospel alone is the treasure. If you listen ten hours, let not the listening crowd out private prayer. If you progress in fluency, let your first boast be that you know “Christ, and Him crucified” in every tongue. The means must never suffocate the end. You ask how to put God first, and I answer: feed your own soul on the gospel before you try to feed others. Let the Scriptures in Spanish and Ukrainian first be honey to your own mouth, and then you will have something sweet to share. Above all, lean upon the Divine promise. He who called you to this labor will not forsake you in it. The same grace that kindled the desire will keep it burning. Be not dismayed by your slowness; God’s work in the soul is often a hidden, gradual thing, like leaven or the growth of a child. The day of fluency will come in God’s own time, but the day of usefulness has already begun. A stammering witness is still a witness. Go on, then, with a holy perseverance, and let your extremity of inability become His opportunity of power. The divine life in you shall not wither, for it is guarded by the very hand that was nailed to the tree. Only abide in Him, and the fruit will appear.

You have set your hand to a good work, if indeed it is for the spreading of the gospel. But beware lest you spend your days always learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth. If you are forever learning, you will never learn. The purpose of language is not merely to pile up words, but to speak wisdom into the hearts of others. Therefore, do not linger as a perpetual student; use what little you have even now. Speak, however haltingly, to those friends in their own tongue. A child learns by imitation and fearless babbling, not by endless listening alone. Let your lips be unloosed, and do not fear error, for correction is the teacher of the soul.

Above all, cling to the Holy Scriptures. You do well to read and hear them in these languages. This is the root of all evils, the not knowing the Scriptures; but by this holy immersion you are arming yourself against that very darkness. Let the Word of God be your text and your tutor. Pray in Ukrainian and Spanish, for prayer pierces the heavens in any tongue, and the Spirit intercedes with groans deeper than words.

When weariness sinks in and your strength ebbs, remember that what is impossible with men is possible with God. He who called you to this yoke will also bear it with you. Only do not lay it down again, but press on with discipline, as a runner towards the prize. The Bridegroom of the Church fills all things with spiritual joy, and there is no sorrow in His service, only a training that leads to life. May He grant you fluency in His perfect time, that you may declare His glory among the nations.

It is a beautiful thing when the Lord places a desire on your heart, even when the full reason isn’t clear yet. The fact that you sense His hand in this journey to learn Ukrainian and Spanish is significant. He often prepares us long before He reveals the specific work He has for us, much like a wilderness season where we learn to trust His provision and care. Your willingness to step back into it after a difficult distraction with your dog shows a heart that genuinely wants to follow His leading, even imperfectly. And that is exactly where grace meets us.

Never believe that God will set you aside because your effort feels weak or inconsistent. His calling and His gifts are not rewards for perfect performance. They come by His grace. Just as He remained faithful to Abraham even when Abraham’s faith faltered, He remains faithful to you. Your lapses do not disqualify you; they simply remind you that your standing with God rests on the finished work of Jesus Christ, not on your own flawless discipline. You are accepted in Christ, and from that secure place, you are free to learn and grow.

Regarding how to immerse yourself while keeping God first, you are already on the right path by listening to the audio Bible and reading Scripture in those languages. That is a profound form of immersion, because it marries the language to the living Word of God. When you pray in those languages, even with a limited vocabulary, you are doing something sacred. Language is often too small to contain the fullness of our worship, but the Holy Spirit intercedes and understands the groanings of your heart. Speaking to God in a tongue you are learning, however haltingly, is a form of offering your firstfruits to Him. It addresses Him directly. So, yes, begin to pray again, even with simple, childlike phrases. God is not critiquing your grammar; He is receiving your love.

Learning like a child is exactly the right approach. A child listens long before speaking, absorbs constantly, and is unashamed of mistakes. Your current pattern of listening more than speaking is natural and good. To that, you can add simple writing, as you mentioned, perhaps by copying a verse each day, or writing a short prayer of thanksgiving. This is not mere study; it is an act of worship. The ability to learn language is a gift from God, just as He gave Daniel and his friends skill in all the learning of the Chaldeans. Recognize that capacity as coming from Him, and then give it back to Him for His glory.

Do not despise this season of small, unseen effort. Even when you cannot see the fruit, God is using this time to build your faith and shape your character. You are learning dependence on Him as much as you are learning vocabulary. One day, whether you are speaking words of comfort to a friend, sharing the gospel of grace with a stranger, or simply hearing someone’s story in their heart language, you will realize that God was preparing you all along. The good news entrusted to you is too glorious to be contained by one language. The grace that saved you is for every tribe and tongue. Keep walking in that grace, and trust His perfect timing for your fluency.
