It is a blessed thing when the heart of a tenant yearns for the soul of his landlord. You have asked prayer that this man may submit to God’s voice and surrender his will to the Father. This is a petition after the Lord’s own heart, for what does the Scripture say but that the will of God must be right, and our highest wisdom is to yield to it? Yet I fear that many, like Israel of old, hear His voice but go their way to rebel yet more and more. The nearness of opportunity brings a fearful responsibility. How many are called, yet they answer not. The voice of God speaks in conscience, in providence, in the preaching of the Word, but men drown it with the world’s clamour. Let us plead that this man may not resist the Spirit, nor put off obedience with promises to be redeemed tomorrow. Oh, for the grace that makes a sinner imitate Abraham, who when he was called obeyed at once!
But let me press this upon all who pray. If we would see another surrendering all, we must examine our own surrender. Is our faith a child-like faith? For without faith it is impossible to please God. Can we say with the psalmist, “Oh, how I love Your law! I delight to do Your will”? We sometimes go to prayer and want God to hear us, but we have not heard what God has to say. If we have not ourselves bowed every thought to the obedience of Christ, our intercessions will lack power. See to it that your own will is swallowed up in the sweet will of your Father. If you can live without your God, you who profess to be a child of God, it will look as if you never were His child. The true child longs for conformity to that blessed will, and is spoiled for the world.
Remember, there is no coming of God to us, and no going of our soul to God, except through the highway of communion, Jesus Christ our Lord. And what a mercy that God is ready to pardon! He makes no hard conditions; He does not say, “I will pardon if you perform this act of heroism,” but bids the sinner look to Christ and live. So let us pray with confidence, expecting that the Lord will crown the year with His goodness, and that even this landlord, hearing the summons to prepare to meet his God, may be brought as a willing captive to the feet of Jesus. Then shall we ascribe every good thing to the God of the whole earth. He is willing to hear God’s side of the argument; may he now yield to that voice which speaks peace through the blood of the cross.

It is good to pray for the soul of another, to entreat the merciful God to draw them by His grace. But remember, the voice of the Lord is not an outward sound alone; it speaks through the conscience, the Scriptures, and the example of faithful lives. So pray earnestly, yet also see that your own conduct does not become a hindrance. Let your life be a constant call that glorifies God, lest the one you seek to win should blaspheme because of any inconsistency in you.
You ask that the owner surrender his will to the Father. This is the very heart of salvation: not a mere outward compliance, but a whole turning of the heart. True repentance is not a matter of a few tears or a momentary fear, but a lasting change of mind and direction. There are those who, like Esau, seek it with tears and yet find no place of repentance, because the grief was not a hatred of sin but only a sorrow over its consequences. Pray, then, that this soul may be given a godly sorrow that leads to life, that the inward transformation may be real and enduring.
Do not despair, for repentance has mighty force. Even one who has sunk into the depths of wickedness can be set free and restored, if only he will lay hold of it rightly. And do not think that God desires only outward sacrifices or rituals; He desires a broken and contrite heart. The will submitted to the Father is a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable. I am praying with you for your ###. This is the very cry God delights to answer, because from beginning to end, Scripture shows that surrender to His voice brings life and stubborn resistance leads only to ruin. Think of the clear choice Jeremiah laid before the king: stay in the city and perish by the sword, famine, or pestilence, or go out and bow to what God was doing, and his life would be spared. The same two paths stand before every soul. Your ### can cling to his own will and remain under judgment, or he can hear the voice of the Lord and surrender everything to the Father. We ask that he does the latter.
The frightening truth is that no one can work his way into God’s grace. Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. Good intentions, decency, or honest dealings with tenants cannot atone for a heart that has not bowed to Jesus Christ. That is why we pray specifically that the ### submits not merely to a better way of living but to the person of Christ, who gave Himself for sinners and rose again for their justification. When a man truly hears God’s voice and yields, he discovers the secret hidden from ages past: Christ in you, the hope of glory. What an exchange, his own broken will for His perfect life within.
