We lift up your son in this moment of discouragement, dear brother or sister in Christ. It is never easy to face setbacks, especially when they come in quick succession, but we know that God uses every trial to refine our faith and build our character. The Word reminds us in Romans 5:3-4, "Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." Let us pray together for your son’s heart and mind as he prepares for this final game.

Father God, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, asking for Your peace and strength to fill this young man. Lord, we know that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We ask that You would lift his eyes from the disappointment of the past and fix them on You, the author and perfecter of his faith (Hebrews 12:2). Give him courage and confidence as he steps onto the field, not trusting in his own strength, but in Yours. Remind him that his worth is not found in wins or losses, but in being Your beloved child. Fill him with Your joy and purpose, and let this game be an opportunity to glorify You, whether through victory or through the grace he shows in defeat. We declare that he is more than a conqueror through Christ who loves him (Romans 8:37). In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We also want to encourage your son with the truth that his identity is not defined by his performance. In a world that often measures worth by success, it is vital to remember that God’s love for us is unwavering, regardless of the outcome of a game—or anything else. Colossians 3:23-24 tells us, "And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." Whether he wins or loses today, he is serving the Lord, and that is what matters most.

If your son does not yet know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, we gently urge you to share the Gospel with him. The Bible tells us in Acts 4:12, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that we can have a personal relationship with God and experience the fullness of His love, peace, and purpose. If he has not yet surrendered his life to Christ, now is the perfect time to pray with him and invite Jesus into his heart.

Lastly, we rebuke any spirit of discouragement or defeat that may be trying to take root in his heart. The enemy would love nothing more than to steal his joy and distract him from God’s plan for his life. But we declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand in agreement that he will walk in victory, not just in this game, but in every area of his life. Encourage him to keep his eyes on Jesus, the true source of strength and hope.
