Your prayer is full of precious truth and it is right that you should give thanks that the Word of the Lord does not return void. As the rain and snow come down from heaven to water the earth, so is the Word effective to accomplish that which God has purposed, Isa 55:10-11. The seed is the Word of God, and you have done well to plant and to water, but it is God alone who gives the increase, 1 Cor 3:6-7. From Him and through Him and to Him be all glory, Rom 11:36, and salvation belongs indeed unto the Lord, Ps 3:8, Jonah 2:9.
You ask that the Lord would continue His work upon your wife's heart, and upon the hearts of your children and kindred and all who have heard the Word in these months. This is a prayer after the mind of Christ, for marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman ordained of God, and it is good to plead that He would keep and restore what He has joined together, and restrain evil and carry on every good work begun until the day of Christ, Phil 1:6.
Take comfort that true repentance is the gift of God, preached in the name of Jesus. We are not to preach repentance after the manner of Moses, as a demand of the law, but as a grace bestowed through the finished work of Christ, where repentance and remission of sins go together, Luke 24:47. It is not a carnal repentance that is of the flesh, produced by terror or judgment alone, but a repentance unto life, wrought in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit, who convinces of sin, John 16:8. Such repentance gives God glory, for it takes the right place before Him, it justifies Him and confesses that His way is right and ours is wrong.
Remember also that the goodness of God leads to repentance, Rom 2:4. The Lord does not merely drive men as Cain was driven, but He draws. It is a wretched spirit that needs ever to be flogged, but the sweetest and best repentance comes by drawing, when we consider His patience, His forbearance, that He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, 2 Pet 3:9, and desires all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, 1 Tim 2:4. Think of His goodness in providence, in daily mercies, in the very breath you draw, and let that goodness be an argument in your pleading with Him for those you love.
You do well to pray for a humbling, as with Nebuchadnezzar who was brought to his senses, Dan 4:34-37, and as the prodigal came to himself in the far country, Luke 15:17, and as Hosea's wife was hedged about till she returned. So Peter was restored not by a long continuance in hardness, but by a look from the Lord which broke his heart and brought forth bitter, salutary, saving tears, Luke 22:61-62. That look severed Peter from the crowd and brought him back to his Lord. Pray that the Lord would grant such a look, such a work of humility before honour, Prov 18:12, that godly sorrow which need not be repented of, 2 Cor 7:10.
Take heed to what true repentance is, lest you or they rest in a false one. You may have a trembling and a complacency toward the Word and yet not have repentance unto life. True repentance will yield works meet for repentance, it will be practical, it will make a man weep and abhor his past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and it will make him avoid present sin because of the love of God who died for him. It will lead him to look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only, for faith and repentance are inseparable. The repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant, and the faith which admits Christ to be sole Master of the heart, must go together. And this repentance lasts, it is not a temporary fit, but it lives as long as faith lives. Sweet sister Repentance is charming company and abides with us even to the gates of pearl.
Therefore continue steadfast in prayer. The Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, Heb 4:12, and my Father is always working even until now, John 5:17. He orders the steps of the righteous, Ps 37:23, as He ordered Philip to the chariot of the man reading Isaiah 53, Acts 8:26-31, and Ananias to Saul, Acts 9:10-11, and Paul into Macedonia, Acts 16:6-10. He can order others across her path to water the seed you have sown, to speak truth and to show kindness. The fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much, James 5:16, and He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, Heb 11:6.
So let us pray together. O Lord, who alone canst create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us, Ps 51:10, look in mercy upon this wife and upon this household, upon children and parents and all who have heard Thy Word. Convince of sin and of righteousness and of judgment by Thy Holy Spirit. Grant that godly sorrow which works repentance unto salvation. Give that repentance which gives Thee glory, which turns from self to Christ, which brings forth fruit and endures. Keep them all from evil, from deception and temptation and the evil one, as they receive the love of the truth that they may be saved, 2 Thess 2:10. Perfect that which Thou hast begun, for Thy promises are Yes and Amen in Christ, 2 Cor 1:20. Hear us for Jesus sake, who is the Amen, the faithful Witness, Rev 3:14, and to whom with the Father and the Spirit be all praise.
