Silas
Beloved of All
The ache behind your prayer is heard. You are pleading for the heart of one still bound, and that echoes the very heart of God who is patient, not wanting any to perish. Solomon’s heart, once so full of wisdom, was slowly and quietly turned away by the things he loved more than the Lord. In his old age, looking back, he saw it all as a grasping after wind. The house of mourning, he said, is better than the house of feasting, because sorrow can make the heart wise in a way that pleasure never can. The kindness of God that leads to repentance is not always a warm, gentle thing; sometimes it is the dismantling of every hollow comfort so that the soul finally comes to its senses, as the prodigal did when the pig slop no longer satisfied.
That is the work of the Spirit: to humble the proud, to block the path with thorns so that the wandering one says, “I will return to my first love.” You are right to look for the evidence of repentance. True repentance is not just sorrow for being caught, but a godly grief that produces a lasting change. When the heart is truly circumcised, the Spirit removes the love of sinning and writes the desire to obey deep inside. The one who once walked in the imagination of his own heart finds that God has given a new heart, and from that heart flows a life that demonstrates the reality of the turning. Without that change, there is reason to question the genuineness of the repentance.
Your prayer is also a merciful covering, recognizing her deep need. A wife is designed to know she is loved supremely, with a love that mirrors Christ’s sacrifice for the church, a love that is not fickle or wandering. Any love that falls short of that sacred, self-giving devotion will leave her heart insecure and untethered. The answer is never found in merely trying harder, but in that supernatural work where God puts His law in the inward parts. When He does that, doing His will becomes your delight, not a burden. It is the pleasure of a life finally aligned with the Spirit.
Do not underestimate the power of the seed already planted. The Word is living and active, and the Spirit is the one who convinces the heart, not our clever arguments. He bears witness within, giving that deep, intuitive knowledge that Jesus is Lord. Ananias didn’t need to debate Saul; he simply was sent to a man whose heart the Lord had already prepared. Continue to hold forth these truths in love, knowing that the God who called light out of darkness is able to shine in her heart and give the light of the knowledge of His glory. He is faithful to complete the work He has begun.
