There’s a young man who is scheduled to be executed this evening at 6P CDT in Texas. He made a lot of mistakes and poor choices as a ### year old but has since turned his life around. Please lift him in prayer as well as his family and the families of his victims.

We join with you in lifting up this young man before the throne of grace this evening, along with his family and the families of his victims, and we carry this heavy burden together before the Lord.

We are reminded that God is both perfectly just and rich in mercy. Scripture teaches that human life is sacred because we are made in the image of God, and that whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God he made man. Genesis 9:6 At the same time God has ordained governing authorities to bear the sword for justice, for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil. Romans 13:4 Yet the Lord also declares that He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Ezekiel 33:11 and that He is not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 We do not know fully the heart of this young man, but God does, and we take comfort that the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

We notice your request speaks of mistakes and poor choices and of turning his life around. We want to gently speak truth in love that what God calls sin is more than mistakes, for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 To turn our life around in our own strength is not enough, we must be born again, therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 We mention this because your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to be clear that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and assurance of forgiveness. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. Romans 10:9 and If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 That is our hope for this young man, for his family, and for every family grieving loss.

We pray together now, Father in heaven, we come before You only in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this young man scheduled to be executed this evening in ###. You know his life, his sins, his repentance, and his heart. If he has truly put his faith in Jesus, we pray You would grant him deep peace that surpasses all understanding, Philippians 4:7 assurance of Your forgiveness, and courage in these final hours. If there is still need for repentance, we pray You would draw him to Yourself even now, that he would call on the name of the Lord and be saved. Have mercy on his soul according to Your steadfast love. We lift up his family who face profound sorrow and helplessness, comfort them as only You can, for blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 We also lift up with equal compassion the families of his victims, who have borne pain and loss that cannot be measured. We ask You to heal their broken hearts, to meet them in their grief, and to help them to know that vengeance belongs to You and You will repay. Romans 12:19 Give them Your comfort and, where needed, Your power to forgive as You have forgiven us. We pray for the officials, guards, chaplains, and all involved in carrying out the duties entrusted to them, that they would act justly and humanely and that Your will would be done. Above all we pray that Your gospel would be magnified and that even in this dark evening Your light and Your mercy would be clearly seen. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue in intercession, not only this evening but in the days to come for all these families, for grief does not end when the hour passes. Keep pointing all who suffer toward the hope found only in Jesus, and trust that God is both righteous in His judgments and abundant in mercy toward all who call upon Him.

We've been sitting with your request as six o'clock approaches and we are grateful you brought this to prayer. It is a heavy thing to hold together the sorrow of the victims' families, the grief of this young man's family, and the weight of his own life and choices in one evening.

Whatever has changed in his life in recent years does not erase what was done, and what was done does not erase his humanity now. Both can be true, and that is why this hour feels so tangled for so many. Grief will not look the same for everyone touched by this, and we want to make room for that. Some will need quiet, others will need to talk, and many will revisit it again in the days ahead.

If you are able, we found it meaningful to simply set aside those minutes around six to be still and pray where you are, rather than following a live feed. And if this stays heavy after tonight, please share it with a pastor or a trusted community around you so you are not carrying it alone.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift this young man to Your mercy, his family in their grief, and the families of those who were harmed in their lasting loss. Draw near to each one tonight, grant wisdom and peace to all involved, and let Your presence be known where words fall short. Amen.

Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. Your burden has been laid before the Lord and we join you in prayer for this solemn hour.

We hear the weight of this evening and the sorrow that rests upon many hearts at once, upon the young man appointed to die, upon his family, and upon the families of those who have suffered grievous loss. There is no light affliction here, and we are bidden to speak comfort to those who mourn, for the Lord saith, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. Full oft the bright winged seraph is sent to comfort some desponding heart, and we are to comfort one another with the comfort wherewith we ourselves have been comforted of God.

We pray that the tender mercy of our God may be known in this place. It was great tenderness on God's part to think of sinful man at all, and great tenderness still that He has provided plenteous redemption. There are many sonnets in that one word redemption, and when that rich adjective is coupled with it, plenteous redemption, it becomes a well of consolation. Christ Jesus gave His life a ransom for many, and by that ransom He wrought out a great redemption. His redemption is compendious, redeeming from the guilt and penalty and also from the power of sin. Yet we must remember that all God's mercy to a sinner is gratis. He never sells, He always gives. He asks no payment. The turning of a life, though it be a token of grace, cannot itself atone for sin. If this young man has been brought to know and love the Lord Jesus Christ, then his hope is not in his own amendment but in the blood which is of limitless efficacy, according to the riches of His grace, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

We therefore lift our voice and ask the Lord to be near to him in these final hours, that if he has not yet laid hold upon Christ, he may yet be led to the Great Messenger of the Covenant, the Interpreter between God and man, who can make the sinner feel the way of salvation as well as know it, and rejoice in it as well as hear of it. We pray that the Word of God may quicken him, for this is the believer's comfort in affliction, Your Word hath quickened me. May he know that whosoever believeth in Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life, for God delighteth in mercy and hath no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.

We pray also for his family, that the God of all comfort would uphold them when the heart aches and the eye is tearful. And we pray with equal earnestness for the families of the victims, who bear a wound that time does not easily heal. May the Lord, who sees the sorrows of the afflicted and brings them low that He may lift them up, grant them that peculiar comfort which comes from His Word and His Spirit, that they may be sustained and not left to despond.

We commit justice and mercy together into the hands of Him who judges righteously and yet is plenteous in mercy. May His will be done, and may all who are touched by this sorrow be drawn nearer to the only refuge for sinners, the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation.

We are joining you in prayer for this young man and for all who are affected as this sentence is carried out this evening.

We pray first for him, that if his turning around has been a true turning to Jesus Christ, he would know the mercy of God which alone can save. Scripture teaches that salvation is through Christ alone, and that even at the last hour His mercy is able to receive a repentant sinner. We ask that the Lord would grant him genuine repentance, faith, peace, and assurance that his hope is not in his own change of life but in the cross of Christ.

We pray also for his family, that God would surround them with comfort and strength in these heavy hours, and sustain them through grief and loss.

We pray for the families of the victims, who carry wounds that do not fade with time. We ask God to give them comfort, healing, and justice tempered with His mercy. He sees every wrong and will judge righteously, and He also says that He desires mercy and not sacrifice. We pray that all who mourn would be comforted and that those who show mercy would obtain mercy, knowing that every good gift finds its fulfillment in His kingdom.

We ask the Lord to be present with all involved tonight, the officials, the chaplains, and the witnesses, and to remind us all that we stand in need of the same mercy. May God be glorified as the just and merciful judge, and may His will be done.

We will continue to lift all of these needs before the Lord with you.

Thank you for bringing this heavy burden before the Lord and for caring enough to ask others to pray.

The weight of this situation is felt on every side, for the young man facing the consequences of choices made years ago, for his family, and for the families of those who were harmed. In hours like this we are reminded how much we all need both truth and mercy, and how God has provided for both in Jesus Christ.

Scripture teaches that the price of redemption was the blood of Jesus shed on the cross. That price has been paid once for all. To be redeemed is to be purchased back when we were lost, and the forgiveness of sins comes through that blood alone. The apostle Paul writes in Romans chapter 8 that we and all creation still groan while we wait for the final part of that redemption, the redemption of our bodies, but the payment that makes it possible is already complete. Those who trust in Christ are brought into one family, from every tribe and people, made one in Him.

Mercy by its very nature is not deserved and cannot be earned. It is not a right. God has said, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. It is not because a person wills or strives, but because God in His sovereignty chooses to show mercy. We can be grateful that He is a God who delights to show mercy. His mercy endures forever. As the psalm repeats, in creation, in history, in every circumstance, His mercy endures forever. He is not looking for a reason to condemn, He is looking for the repentant heart that says, God, I am sorry, so that He can forgive. That is why Jonah was sent to Nineveh, because God desired to show mercy if the people would turn to Him.

That mercy does not set aside justice. Mercy and truth must meet together, and righteousness and peace must kiss. They meet in Jesus. Through the cross, justice was satisfied because the penalty for sin was paid, and mercy can be offered without violating truth. In Christ, God can forgive the guilty and still be just, and we can have peace with God and be counted righteous before Him.

God is also described as the God of all comfort, the One who stands by in the darkest hours to strengthen and encourage. When sorrow and grief are deep, especially the grief of losing someone to death or violence, He draws near to comfort those who call on Him. His mercy is as high as the heavens above the earth toward those who fear Him, and there is no depth of need it cannot cover when we call upon Him. Even when we feel we have exhausted His mercy, His word assures us that His mercy still endures forever for all who turn to Him.

We join you in praying for this young man, that if he has put his faith in Jesus, he would know the assurance of redemption through His blood and the peace that comes from being forgiven, and that he would face what is before him with a true hope in Christ alone. We pray for his family in their anguish, that the God of all comfort would stand by them, sustain them, and make His presence and love real to them in this dark night. We also lift up the families of the victims, who carry their own deep wounds and loss, that God would comfort them, heal what only He can heal, and show them His compassion and mercy as well.

May the Lord show Himself merciful and near to all who are suffering in this situation, and may each one find that when they call upon Him, His mercy truly does endure forever.
