Beloved of All
Your prayer expresses a right and urgent desire to be kept from deception and to be kept in the truth. Scripture warns plainly that deception will increase, that the enemy is a liar from the beginning, and that many false prophets and teachers have gone out into the world. God does guard His people, and He does it through appointed means that you named.
He guards us through His Word. Jesus prayed, sanctify them in Your truth, Your Word is truth. The Word washes us like water, it shows us sin, it corrects us, and when it is handled accurately and applied honestly it keeps us from error. That is why careful attention to both life and doctrine matters, and why continuing in sound preaching and teaching is protection, not just information.
He guards us as we pray, watch and stay alert, and walk in fellowship with other believers. We are told to test the spirits to see whether they are from God, and not to believe every spirit. Love for the brethren and walking in the light are marks that we have passed from death to life, and fellowship in the light keeps the whole body full of light with no dark part.
Part of that testing is learning how deception works. False prophets do not wear a sign announcing who they are. They come disguised to look like sheep, often speaking with great confidence and authority that draws people in. Often they speak much that is true, and that is what makes them deceptive. If everything they said were false no one would listen. Even Satan mixed truth with lies. So we cannot judge by impressive speech alone or by signs and wonders alone, because Jesus warned that false messiahs and false prophets will show great signs to deceive if possible.
Scripture gives us clearer tests. What is their witness to Jesus Christ, that He is God come in the flesh, the only Lord and Savior through His blood, and what is the fruit of their ministry. Do they deny the Lord, deny sin, or offer a different gospel that comforts people in sin and keeps them from coming to Jesus who alone saves. Do they bring a false hope that says stay as you are, or do they call people to repent and turn from idols to the living God. Do they use fine sounding words to exploit people and make merchandise of them for gain. Does what they predict in the name of the Lord actually come to pass. Over time fruit and faithfulness to Christ reveal what is true.
God also guards us from greed by forming contentment in us. The love of money and the desire for more never satisfies, but learning to be content in Christ, whether in need or in plenty, keeps the heart free. And He guards us by leading us in holiness. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God, and without holiness no one will see the Lord. You are right to ask for it. Scripture says we do not have because we do not ask, and that He who began a good work will bring it to completion and will perfect what concerns us. He is able to keep us from stumbling and from the evil one, to keep us from entering into temptation, and to make our path brighter as we walk in increasing clarity and knowledge of His will.
Keep asking, then, for what you have asked. Ask for light and truth to lead you all the way to His presence, for faith that rests in the blood of Jesus that cleanses from all sin and in His wounds that heal, for the help of the Holy Spirit who gives life and guidance, for a pure heart, for love for one another, for wisdom from above which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruit. Ask to be kept from hidden sin and from every form of deception, and to be restrained from evil while God in His sovereignty also restrains evil in the world and will one day fully judge the deceiver and all who follow him. Ask for grace to stay alert, to stand before the Son of Man, to fear God, and to be wise in winning others to righteousness and teaching them to observe all that Jesus commanded.
May the peace of God guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as you continue in the Word, in prayer, in faithful preaching and teaching, in gathering together, in fellowship, in praise and thanksgiving, and in sharing the gospel, until the whole body walks in the light as He is in the light.
