Just called from hospice

My ### who is in hospice nurse just called and she is worse. It’s Holiday weekend. I live in the mountains I have to drive a canyon. Please Lord guide me. I can’t sleep! I’m so upset. I love her. Please dear Jesus please let her not be afraid.

We hear the heaviness in your heart and we are lifting you and your loved one up together before the Lord in Jesus' name. We are so sorry for this painful night and the weight of that call from hospice, especially with the holiday weekend and the difficult drive through the mountains and canyon ahead of you.

We thank you for calling on dear Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have comfort and access to the Father. Your love for her is so evident and the Lord sees your sleeplessness and your upset heart.

Scripture reminds us of His presence in this very valley. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4. We cling to that promise for her right now, that she would feel His rod and staff comforting her and that fear would be lifted. When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3 and There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. 1 John 4:18. We pray His perfect love would surround her and cast out all fear.

We also pray for you in this waiting and worrying. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. We ask for that guarding peace over your heart and mind tonight when you cannot sleep. We remember that In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. Psalm 4:8.

For your journey, we pray for the Lord's guiding and keeping. We lift our eyes to the hills, where does our help come from, our help comes from Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 and Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more. Psalm 121:8. We ask Him to guide your hands on the wheel, to make the canyon road safe, to give you wisdom about when to travel and to keep you from harm with holiday traffic. If you are exhausted and unable to sleep, we encourage you to seek rest even for a short time, or to ask someone to go with you or to wait for daylight if the Lord so leads, trusting that He is with her even when you cannot be physically at her side. Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10.

We pray together now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear loved one in hospice to You. Lord, You know her name and You know her heart. We ask that You would draw near to her now, that You would let her not be afraid, that she would feel Your presence and Your angels near. Give her peace that passes understanding, ease any pain or confusion, and let her know she is loved and not alone. We pray that she knows Jesus as her Savior and has the assurance of eternal life, for You have said that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16.

We lift up this dear one who loves her and cannot sleep. Lord, calm the storm inside, quiet the racing thoughts, and grant rest even in sorrow. Guide every mile of that mountain and canyon drive, keep the road safe, give clear eyes and steady hands, and bring a safe arrival in Your timing. Comfort this family with Your presence as the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Let Your will be done and let Your peace reign in this home and in that hospice room.

We trust You with her life and with this journey, and we ask all these things in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We were so sorry to read your message. Waking to that call from hospice, knowing she is worse, and facing a holiday weekend drive through the mountains would leave anyone shaken and unable to sleep. Your love for her comes through so clearly, and your prayer that she not be afraid is such a tender one.

We are holding both of you in prayer tonight.

For the drive ahead, please put safety first. If you can, call the hospice nurse back for a clear update on timing and whether coming right now is needed, let a family member or friend know when you plan to leave and your route through the canyon, and try not to drive alone while exhausted or in the dark. If someone can ride with you or do the driving, that is much better. Daylight and rest will help you get there safely, and the hospice team can keep you informed while you wait.

It makes sense you cannot sleep. Be gentle with yourself in these hours, take turns with others to keep vigil by phone if you can, and allow people nearby to sit with you.

Father, we lift this woman in hospice to You and ask for Your nearness and peace to quiet any fear. Comfort her and let her feel loved and not alone. Guide her loved one on the road, grant wisdom about when to travel and keep them safe through the canyon, and give them rest even in this sorrow. In Jesus' name, amen.

Peace perfect peace is promised even in this midnight of care, and your cry has been heard. You love her dearly, you cannot sleep, the road before you through the canyon seems long and perilous on this holiday weekend, and the word from hospice has torn your heart. The Lord knows this sorrow surging round you, and He knows her frailty also.

Hear what the Lord speaks to such a troubled mind, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." That peace is not far off, but a present possession. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, and to do His will and to rest upon His care is rest even when duties press and sorrows throng. When loved ones are far away, even for a little while, the promise stands, in Jesus keeping we are safe, and they are safe. Your loved one, though sinking in body, is in His hands, and you also as you must travel are in His hands. Jesus we know, and He is on the throne, though our future is all unknown.

Therefore fear not, for this word grows plentifully in God's garden. "Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, yes I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness." The very anxiety which comes with this difficulty unfits you to meet it, but faith overcomes fear when you cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. He knows each wind in the canyon and the speed at which it travels, He appoints the time and the way, and He will make her bed in her sickness and guide your steps on the road.

We pray now for you both. O Lord Jesus, look upon this dear one who cannot sleep for grief and fear. Keep this weary mind stayed upon You and keep it in perfect peace. Grant safe passage through the mountains, guide hands and eyes along the canyon, and set Your sheltering wings over both the traveler and the one who waits in hospice. Take away tormenting fear, for perfect love casts out fear, and let the precious blood whisper peace within her heart that she may not be afraid. Deliver from the fear of death those who through it are subject to bondage, and let her know that to be under Your wing is to be safe, safe, safe and near to God. Give sleep to the weary, comfort to the loving heart, and let trust in Your promised help overcome all dismay. In Your name, who alone is our peace and our salvation, we ask it. Amen.

Your sorrow has reached us in this difficult night and we hear how deeply you love her. It is right to be troubled when one we love draws near to the end, and to feel the kind of anxiety that keeps sleep away. We are praying for you now in that pain and love.

You asked the Lord to guide you as you must drive through the mountains and the canyon on this holiday weekend. The way you describe has precipices on either side and calls for a sober and wakeful heart. We are reminded that we travel the narrow way confident because Jesus is our guide, and also with reverent care because the path needs watchfulness. Pray for wisdom whether to go at once or to wait for light and rest, and if you do travel, go slowly, stay alert, let someone know your route and your timing, and do not drive while overcome by sleeplessness. May the Lord keep your steps and bring you safely.

We join your prayer that Jesus would let her not be afraid. For those who belong to Him, Scripture speaks of death as sleep, and gives comfort not only that there is a resurrection but that those who have fallen asleep in Christ will be raised and we shall be ever with the Lord. That promise is our hope and our comfort. May He quiet her fears, hold her in perfect peace, and let her know His nearness. May He also quiet your own trembling heart with that same hope, and give you rest even in this watching.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ alone who is our salvation, we ask for Your mercy on this dear one in hospice. Take away fear and give Your peace that passes understanding. Guide and protect this loved one on the mountain road, grant clear judgment and safety, and give sleep and strength after anxious watching. Let Your love be felt by both of them in this night. Amen.

I have been praying for you as I read your message and I hear how heavy and sleepless this night has been. Your love for her comes through so clearly, and your desire that she not be afraid is a beautiful prayer that God hears.

The Scriptures give us the cure for fear, and it is remembering the Lord and becoming conscious again of His presence. David wrote that though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me. Fear grows when we forget the Lord, and faith grows when we remember Him. Fear and faith cannot rule the heart at the same time. Where fear is allowed to take over, faith is pushed out, and where there is strong confidence in God, fear is driven away. That is why the call through the Bible is to remember God, to be strong and courageous because He is with us.

That promise is for her and for you. She is walking through that valley now, but she is not alone. The presence of the Lord is the answer to fear. If she knows Jesus, He is with her in that room, close enough to comfort and keep her. Pray that she will sense that nearness, that her heart will be aware that He is holding her, so fear has no place. And the same presence goes with you. Whether you are at home unable to sleep or behind the wheel on that mountain road, He is with you.

Fear also tries to push us into hasty and unwise actions. Wisdom does what is prudent and careful, but not out of panic. If you do drive that canyon, ask the Lord to guide you with a clear and calm mind. Pray for wisdom about when to go, for alertness, for protection on the road, and for His hand to keep your foot from slipping. The Lord promises to be the confidence of those who trust Him and to keep them safe. He is a high tower that the righteous can run into and find safety.

There is another kind of fear the Bible speaks of that is very different from this distress. It is a reverent awe of God, a respect for who He is in His greatness and power and love. That holy reverence is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. It teaches us to love what God loves and to turn from what harms us, and it leads to life and rest. When we live with that awe of God, we can rest in His care even when circumstances are hard, knowing that those who reverence Him lack no good thing He wants to give them.

So I am praying for you both now. Father, in the name of Jesus, I lift this dear one in hospice to You. Let her not be afraid. Make Your presence known to her in a deep and gentle way. Quiet her heart, take away confusion and fear, and let her feel Your love surrounding her. For this dear one who loves her and cannot sleep, grant peace that calms the racing thoughts, grant rest for the body, and grant clear guidance for every decision about travel. Keep this traveler safe on that road, give wisdom for each mile, and let every step be ordered by You. Help faith to rise and fear to fade as You are remembered and trusted. Amen.

Please keep turning your thoughts to Him whenever fear rises. Whisper His name, remember His promises, and thank Him that He is with you and with her right now.
