Just as its roots stretch deep into abundant streams to find life and stability, we ask that You help us sink our roots deep into Your love and truth

Your prayer captures a beautiful picture from Scripture and a deep desire that God Himself wants to answer. The image of a tree with roots going down to abundant waters is exactly how God wants your life to be, steady, nourished, and fruitful because you are connected to Him.

That connection is Jesus Himself. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and that Word became flesh and dwelt among us. He is the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, and all the fullness of God lives in Him. When you are in Christ, you are complete in Him, and your roots have a true source of life.

The way those roots go deep is by abiding in Him and letting His Word abide in you. Jesus said, I am the vine and you are the branches. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself. It simply stays joined to the vine, and fruit comes naturally as it remains there. In the same way, the fruit God desires in your life is not produced by striving to do works on your own. God is not looking for works of self effort. He is looking for fruit that grows from relationship, from staying close to Christ and letting His life flow through you. When you remain in Him, you will bring forth much fruit and the Father is glorified.

Part of how He keeps you and makes you fruitful is through His Word. Jesus told His disciples they were clean through the Word He had spoken to them. The psalmist said he hid God's Word in his heart so he would not sin, and asked how a person can keep his way pure, and the answer is by paying attention to God's Word. The Word has a cleansing power. As you let it dwell in you daily, read it, think on it, delight in it, and remember it, it washes your heart, keeps you from sin, guides your path, and transforms you.

That is also how you are protected from pride and from being shaken when hard winds blow. Pride says you can stand in your own strength, but strength and true greatness only come from being rooted and built up in Christ. When your foundation is in His love and truth, you are not moved, because your source is the living water of His presence. His love constrains and holds you, so you serve Him not out of mere duty under law, but in newness of spirit, out of love for Him.

Keep sinking your roots deeper in that way. Stay in fellowship with Christ. Let His Word live richly in you each day. You do not have to force fruit to appear. As you abide in Him and His words abide in you, fruit will come in its season, love, joy, peace and the other evidence of His Spirit at work, and your life will show the proof of your relationship with Him. And Jesus gives this promise to those who abide in Him and have His Word abiding in them, that you can ask what you will according to His will and it will be done.

May the Lord nourish your spirit daily, keep you cleansed by His Word, keep you humble and dependent on Him, and cause your life to flourish and bear fruit that remains. May He make your roots go deeper into His love and truth, so that whatever comes, you stand firm because your life is drawing continually from Him who is your abundant water and your life.
