Jesus Christ thank you

Disciple of Prayer
Dear God thank you for helping me at work today. Please continue to help me with my projects and proposals and to be able to get along with my wife because we both drink too much alcohol and I am sorry that I have gone back to alcohol after stopping for a month. Please continue to soften the hearts of my bosses and my coworkers and my customers and especially my wife. Please help me be a better husband and a better person and a better dad to our adult kid's and a better worker. Thank you for reducing the pain in my left elbow and my shoulder after having steroid shots to hopefully prevent the need for surgery. Thank you for the sandwich that I just ate after not eating anything all day. I am home now laying on my bed watching TV and having a drink. Sorry 😐. Please help me not have any AWS tomorrow. Please help me and my wife to be nice to each other and to help each other. Please help me dry my son's ceiling after our rooftop AC had a clogged condensate drain line and caused a water leak in our home. Please help my take care of the termite problem in my carport. Sorry for asking you for so much help so many times. My wife is downstairs with her drink and I hope that we don't say anything mean to each other. She's a good person. She just needs help with the AUD. Me too 🙏. Thank you for listening and I hope that all the good people who have been praying for us are doing well. There are some really good people who use this service and they know who they are. Please help them with their needs.

We join with you in thanking Jesus Christ for hearing you and for the help He gave you at work today and we thank God for His many provisions, for the relief you felt in your elbow and shoulder after the steroid shots, and even for the sandwich after a long day without eating. We hear your honest and humble heart as you confess that you and your wife both struggle with drinking too much alcohol and that you have gone back to drinking after stopping for a month, and we hear your desire to be a better husband, a better father to your adult children, a better worker and a better person.

We want to lovingly and firmly address the alcohol use because Scripture is clear about it. The Word says Eph 5:18 And don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, and Prov 20:1 Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. We understand that alcohol use disorder is a powerful bondage and we do not condemn you, for Ps 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, but we must rebuke drunkenness itself as sin that harms your body which is a temple of the Holy Spirit, harms your marriage, and dulls your ability to hear and follow God. To pray for help while still holding a drink in your hand is a divided heart, and God calls us to repentance which means turning away. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We encourage you to confess fully, to pour out what remains, and to choose sobriety today by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by willpower alone.

We are also concerned for your mention of AWS tomorrow. Alcohol withdrawal can be medically serious and we urge you to seek medical help and godly counsel and accountability right away, not to face this alone. God provides a way out and strength, for 1 Cor 10:13 says No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. That way of escape often includes a pastor, a trusted Christian brother, a counselor, a support group, and medical care, and we encourage you and your wife to seek help together and to help each other toward sobriety rather than enabling one another.

We thank God for your marriage and your love for your wife. You said she is a good person and we agree that God loves you both and wants your marriage to reflect His love. We pray that you both will be kind and tenderhearted to one another. Eph 4:32 says Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, and Col 3:19 says Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them. Softened hearts begin with our own obedience to be sober minded and gentle, and to speak with grace even when tired or tempted.

We rejoice that you thanked Jesus by name, for it is only through Him we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Never be sorry for asking God for so much help so many times. He invites us to pray without ceasing. Phil 4:6 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and 1 Pet 5:7 says casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. He never grows weary of your prayers.

We now pray together in Jesus name. Father, we thank You for this husband who comes honestly before You. We ask You to forgive where alcohol has taken Your place and to fill him and his wife with Your Holy Spirit instead. Give them a holy hatred for drunkenness and a deep hunger for sobriety and for Your presence. Protect him from withdrawal and guide him to wise medical and pastoral help. Bring complete healing to his elbow and shoulder and prevent the need for surgery according to Your will. Bless the work of his hands, give him wisdom and favor with his bosses, coworkers and customers, and help him in his projects and proposals for Your glory. Teach him and his wife to be kind and to help one another, to build each other up and not tear each other down with mean words, especially in the evenings. Provide for the practical needs of drying his son's ceiling and fixing the condensate drain and taking care of the termite problem in the carport. Help him to be the husband and father You created him to be, faithful, sober, loving and present for his wife and adult children. We also lift up all the good people who have prayed for this family, meet their needs as well. We trust You to do what is best and we ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

Thank you for sharing so openly with us. We hear gratitude in your thanks for work, for less pain after the shots, even for a sandwich after a long day, and we also hear the heaviness you carry wanting to get along with your wife and to be the husband, dad and worker you long to be.

Carrying concern about alcohol for both of you, and worrying about how tomorrow will feel, is a lot to hold alone. Because you mentioned fear of withdrawal, we encourage you to connect soon with your doctor or clinic for care alongside prayer, and to let a trusted pastor or counselor know what is happening. Many find it helps to have regular in person support, like a Christ centered recovery group, and someone to check in with between meetings.

We are also thinking of the stress of the leak at your son's ceiling, the carport issue, and pressure at work. You do not have to sort all of it at once. One small next step with your wife when you are both sober, like agreeing on a calm way to pause a conversation if it turns sharp, can protect kindness at home.

Father, we lift this husband and his wife to You, thankful for their lives and their family. Give them wisdom, protection and steady help, draw them closer to You and to each other, and guide each practical need at work and at home. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is much grace in a heart that can still give thanks while confessing need, and your honest prayer does both. You have thanked God for help at work, for easing pain in your elbow and shoulder, even for a sandwich after a long day without food, and in the same breath you have confessed your sorrow over returning to drink after a month of abstaining, and your desire to be a better husband to your wife, a better father to your adult children, and a better worker. God hears such humble honesty.

Scripture tells us that He is the God of Peace and He has, on His part, prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation. That reconciliation is not worked out by our own efforts, but is received. God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation. When we talk about being at peace with God and speak of the joy which this reconciliation brings, we can say we know it is so, for we have felt it. The first step is to know our need of reconciliation, the second is receiving the reconciliation through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and the third is joy in God. It is not enough that God should be forgiving, we must yield to Him also, turning from what harms us and trusting the atonement Christ has made.

In that light, your sorrow over alcohol is not to be hidden but brought plainly to Christ. You and your wife both struggle with what you rightly call AUD, and you desire to be kind to one another and not speak mean words. That desire is good and of God. Do not ask Him to bless the drink itself, but to deliver you from it. The same Lord who softens the hearts of bosses and coworkers and customers can soften and strengthen your own heart to choose sobriety. Please, as you pray against withdrawal tomorrow, also seek wise and prompt medical help and godly counsel in your local church or a trusted recovery ministry, for God often heals and helps through the hands of physicians and the support of His people. Lay aside the evening drink that so easily becomes a snare, and ask for grace to walk a new path one day at a time, confessing quickly when you fall and receiving again His mercy.

Your marriage is a sacred covenant, and as has been truly said, marriage is not a mere arrangement but is cemented by mutual love, where husband and wife become one, the result of choice on both sides and sustained by daily kindness. You have said your wife is a good person who needs help, and you need help too. That mutual help is the very picture of marriage. To be nice to each other and to help each other, as you prayed, is to live out that oneness. Choose again each morning to love her as Christ loves His Church, with patience when words could wound, with gentleness when the temptation to drink or to argue is strong, and with practical service in the small things like caring for your home.

He who hears prayer cares also for your daily labors and burdens, your projects and proposals, the clogged condensate line and the water stained ceiling of your son, the termite problem in the carport, the pain that needed steroid shots. Nothing is too small for His eye. Bring each of these labors to Him, and be diligent in the work of your hands as unto the Lord.

Let us pray together for you, your wife, your family, and those faithful people who have prayed for you.

O gracious Father, we thank You for every mercy You have shown this day, for help at work, for relief of pain, for daily bread. We come through Jesus Christ alone, who made reconciliation by His blood as the Lamb, and we ask that this dear brother and his wife may fully receive that reconciliation and joy in You. Grant repentance and deliverance from all dependence on alcohol, give strength to turn away and to endure, and provide godly help and medical care where needed. Soften hearts at home and at work, and teach this husband and wife to love one another with tender, forgiving love, becoming more truly one. Make him faithful in his calling as husband, father and worker, and supply wisdom for every practical need in his home and labor. Keep him and his household in peace this night, guard their lips from harsh words, and let tomorrow be lived in sobriety and kindness for Your glory. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our only hope. Amen.

Continue to seek Him, to open His Book daily, and to walk in the light with other believers who can bear your burdens and keep you accountable. He who has begun a good work will be faithful to complete it as you yield to Him.
