Disciple of Prayer
Dear God please forgive me. My Best friend has hated his only and older brother for do many years and I have been a friend to both of them up until tonight. I texted my best friend tonight about watching the world series and he was texting me back some very mean things. He said that I have to choose him or his brother as a friend. And I chose to not be friends with either one of them anymore. I have deleted all past phone call recorded messages and text and I have blocked them both from ever calling me or texting me again. I forgive them both for their hatred but I will let them both go after tonight. Tonight may be my last day of drinking alcohol. It's not fun anymore. My wife will most likely continue her AUD but I don't want to live like this anymore. I hope that you can help me change to be a better husband and a better person and a better dad to our adult kid's and a better worker. I hope that I can payoff our funeral arrangements and can be able to work long enough to financially help my wife and our adult kid's. I thank you for everything that you have given me. I'm tired and I really don't want to do this anymore. I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I may also choose to not bother anyone else on this service and I am so thankful for everyone who has prayed for me and my family. I pray that you all will have your needs met from God and Jesus Christ my lord and Savior. Jesus please forgive me for finally giving up. It's been a good fight. Amen 🙏

We hear the heaviness in your heart and we thank you for sharing so honestly with us. We have read your words about your best friend and his brother, about choosing to step away from both friendships, about your decision that tonight may be your last day drinking, about your love for your wife and your adult kids, your desire to be a better husband and father and worker, and about how tired you are and feeling like giving up. We want you to know we are standing with you in prayer right now and we do not want you to walk away or to isolate yourself. God has not given up on you and we have not either.

We are encouraged that you have forgiven both of these brothers even as you have set a boundary with them. The hatred between brothers is not from God, for we are told in 1 John 4:20 that if a man says I love God and hates his brother he is a liar. And in Matthew 5:9 we are told blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God. A true friend loves at all times as Proverbs 17:17 says, and does not force you to choose sides in a bitter division. Your choice to not be drawn into their hatred is understandable, and your forgiveness reflects the heart of Christ. We pray that in time the Lord may bring healing to that family, and if He opens a door for reconciliation without strife, that you would be willing to be a peacemaker from a distance, but we understand your need for peace right now and we do not condemn you for stepping back.

We rejoice with you in your desire to leave alcohol behind. You said it is not fun anymore and you do not want to live like this anymore, and that is a godly conviction. Proverbs 20:1 says wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler and whoever is led astray by them is not wise, and Ephesians 5:18 tells us do not be drunken with wine in which is dissipation but be filled with the Spirit. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit as 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches. Choosing sobriety is choosing clarity and life, and God will give you strength for each day as 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able but will with the temptation also make the way of escape that you may be able to endure it. We will pray for your wife as well as she continues to struggle with AUD, that the Lord would draw her heart and that your changed life would be a quiet and loving witness to her.

We hear how tired you are when you say you do not want to do this anymore and that you feel you are finally giving up. Please hear us, you are not forgotten and your fight is not over. The Lord sees you and He is near to the brokenhearted as Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Jesus Himself invites you in Matthew 11:28 saying come to me all you who labor and are heavily burdened and I will give you rest. When you feel overwhelmed, Psalm 61:2 says when my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I. And Isaiah 40:29 says He gives power to the weak and He increases the strength of him who has no might. Galatians 6:9 encourages us let us not be weary in doing good for in due season we will reap if we do not give up. God still has purpose for you as a husband, as a father to your adult kids, as a worker, and He will provide for your needs including the financial burdens you carry for funeral arrangements and for your family, for Philippians 4:19 promises my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

You asked Jesus Christ to forgive you and we want to assure you that He does. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Through Jesus alone we have forgiveness and access to the Father, for John 14:6 says Jesus said to him I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me. And Romans 8:28 reminds us that we know that all things work together for good for those who love God to those who are called according to his purpose. Even this painful night can be used by God for your good and for His glory if you keep turning to Him.

Please do not choose to not bother anyone else or to withdraw. Isolation makes the burden heavier. We encourage you to stay connected to prayer, to reach out to a trusted pastor or a mature Christian brother or counselor, and to let your wife and your adult kids know how you are feeling so you are not carrying this alone. If you ever feel you might harm yourself, please reach out immediately to someone near you and to a pastor or counselor for help.

We pray together now for you.

Father in heaven, we lift up our brother to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that he has come to You confessing and seeking forgiveness and You have promised to forgive and cleanse him. Lord, touch his weary heart and give him rest. Lift this heaviness and renew his strength so he can mount up with wings like eagles. Help him to walk away from alcohol and be filled with Your Holy Spirit day by day, giving him victory over temptation. We pray for his wife that You would bring healing and freedom from AUD and draw her to Yourself, and help him to love her with patience and godly example. We pray for his adult kids and for his work, that You would help him to be the husband and father and worker You created him to be, and that You would provide for every financial need and give him peace about the future. Heal the wound of these friendships and guard his heart from bitterness, and let him know he is deeply loved and not alone. Keep him from giving up, and show him Your good plans for his life, for Jeremiah 29:11 says for I know the thoughts that I think toward you says Yahweh thoughts of peace and not of evil to give you hope and a future. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word, to take one day at a time in sobriety, and to keep letting others pray for you. You are not a burden to us. We thank God for you and we will continue to pray that your needs will be met and that you will feel His hope again.

We are so thankful you reached out and shared so honestly with us. We hear how tired you are, and how heavy tonight has felt after the painful texts with your best friend and his brother, the decision to step away from both friendships, and the larger weight you have been carrying about drinking, your marriage, your kids and work, and wanting to provide for your family. It makes sense you would feel worn out and discouraged.

We also hear the good desire in you to make a change, to be a better husband and dad, to keep working and care for your family well, and to leave alcohol behind because it is not bringing you joy anymore. Wanting that kind of change matters, and you do not have to sort it all out alone tonight.

When you feel like giving up, please stay with someone and let one trusted person know how you are feeling right now, whether that is your wife, an adult child, a pastor, or a counselor. Alongside prayer, it would also be a caring next step to talk soon with your doctor or a counselor about your drinking and about feeling tired and ready to give up, so you have steady support in person.

Father, we lift this brother to You in Jesus name. You see his tiredness and his heart to love his family well. Please keep him safe tonight, surround him with people who will stay near, and give him wisdom and strength for each next step. Help him know he is not forgotten and that Your mercy is still at work. Amen.

Thank you for your prayers and advice. Dear God I give you my life my heart my soul my spirit. Into your hands Lord I commit my spirit. I give you back everything that you have given me. Thank you

Your weariness and your honest confession have come before the Lord who does not despise a broken and contrite heart. You say you are tired and you do not want to do this anymore, and you ask if Jesus will forgive you for feeling that you have given up. Hear this, that the forgiveness of sins is a grand blessing, and it is not a distant hope but a present possession for those who are in Christ. We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace. The forgiveness is not only in His work, but in Himself. When you have Christ, you have redemption, for He is redemption. When you have Christ, you have forgiveness, for He is the propitiation for our sins. He has put sin away by the sacrifice of Himself, and He takes away His anger from His people. No pain of body can compare to the burden of conviction, but no joy on earth can compare to knowing that burden is lifted at the cross.

You speak of drinking and of a desire that tonight may be your last day of it, while your wife continues to struggle. This desire to be free is good, for to be delivered from the bondage of corruption and to be made the Lord's free man is good for yourself, good for your family, and good for the glory of God. There are prisoners who have been set free through the blood of the covenant, and there are prisoners yet to be set free. You are a prisoner of hope, within reach of One who sets free from sin. Jesus Christ has been delivered from the bondage of the grave and He comes to roll away the stone from the mouth of the pit and says, Turn to Me, your only stronghold. There is hope for the worst and most despairing. Keep at the foot of the cross and you will maintain, yes, you will increase your joy in the Lord, and at the same time practice great watchfulness, for many a child of God has to weep for months because he did not watch for minutes. If the Lord has put this resolve in your heart, do not walk it alone. Seek the help of your pastor, a faithful brother, and those who can bear your burden and keep you accountable, and cast yourself wholly upon Christ who is your strength.

You have forgiven both friends though you have chosen to step away from them after hurtful words and the demand to choose one over the other. To forgive as you have is to act with an eye to the Lord's release, doing it for the Lord's sake and looking for blessing from God, even when no reward comes from those to whom kindness is shown. Remember how gracious God is, how He gives to the unthankful and causes His rain to fall upon all. To forgive and to release bitterness is right. If boundaries are needed for peace, let them be kept without hatred, committing both men to God in prayer.

You desire to be a better husband and father and worker, to provide and even to prepare for the future needs of your family. This is a good and holy desire. Learn how to persevere not by looking to your own goodness or earnestness, but because God has begun the work. He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. He sees the end from the beginning. His arm is not shortened and nothing is too hard for Him. He does not abandon a work half formed upon the wheel. Your hand has been in the fight against sin, and you would have the day be long enough to slay it, but the battle is not yours alone. He will complete what He has started as you abide in Him, in His Word, in prayer, and in the fellowship of His people.

You say you do not want anyone to feel sorry for you and that you may not bother anyone else on this service. Do not give way to that thought, for despair is the mother of all sorts of evil, and to say there is no hope is to throw the reins to further sin. There is no hope for you in yourself, but there is hope for you in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior of such as you. Like the dove that found no rest for the sole of her foot upon the waters and returned into the ark to Noah, so you have found no rest in these waters of strife and weariness. Return into the ark to Christ. He puts out His hand and takes you and draws you into Himself. Do not fly over the waters alone. Remain among the people of God who will pray for you and with you, for the Lord has not called you to fight this good fight alone.

May the Holy Spirit help you now.

We pray that the Lord Jesus Christ would assure you of forgiveness through His blood, that you would know you are redeemed and no longer under condemnation. We pray He would break the bondage of alcohol and be your stronghold day by day, giving you strength to walk in sobriety and watchfulness. We pray for your wife in her struggle, that the Lord would have mercy upon her and draw her also to Himself, and that He would make you a faithful, patient and loving husband to her. We pray for your adult children, that they would see Christ in you and be blessed by your perseverance. We pray for your work and your provision, that God who promised to give enough for the year of rest and beyond would supply what you need to care for your family. Keep you from giving up, dear soul, but cause you to hold on your way, for the righteous shall hold on his way. May you taste and handle the old, old story again and find it new, and not be moved from the hope of your calling. Amen.

You have touched my soul with your words and advice. I wanted to quit and give up. But as my mom once said. Here by the grace of God go I. I remember after my parents divorced my mom took me to ###. And she got us a room at a hotel called ###. And we played in the Sand and I remember we both had separate beds next to each other and in between our beds was a little night stand with a drawer and in that drawer was a Bibble and she opened it up and she told me to flip through the pages until I stopped and then she read the verse that I picked. I don't remember the verse but I do remember that my Mom was a good person and a good Mom and I hope and I pray that you my God my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is hugging her right now and telling her that she was a good person and a good Mom and that because of her that I will be ok. Amen
