Silas
Beloved of All
Your willingness to share this struggle after ten years of isolation is heard, and your desire to be ready emotionally for social situations and for fellowship in church is a good and hopeful prayer before the Lord.
The Bible teaches that God created people for fellowship with Himself. The purpose of the gospel is to bring you into that fellowship. It is a partnership in the deepest sense, a mutual sharing of life and resources and a mutual care for one another. It is amazing that the eternal God who made the universe is conscious of you, knows you, and desires to share life with you. When you feel that others may not want to be around you, or when even online communication feels overwhelming, the truth remains that God longs for fellowship with you and seeks to draw you into closeness with Himself.
John writes that our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, and that when we walk in that fellowship our joy may be full. That joy is not found in trying harder or doing more for God. The Lord desires simple, loving time with you, sitting with Him, sharing your heart, listening to His. Fellowship with Him is hindered when sin separates us, but God graciously restores that fellowship through Jesus Christ. As you confess your need to Him and receive His forgiveness and cleansing, the way is open to walk closely with Him again in freedom.
That fellowship with God is the foundation for fellowship with others. Within the church, fellowship is meant to be a real sharing of life, a caring community where people bear one another's burdens and see their gifts as complementary rather than competing. God intends His people to be built up together in love, and that kind of love is what makes His presence known among them. Understanding this can take pressure off. God is not asking you to perform socially or to earn a place. He first invites you to rest in fellowship with Him, and from that place He gently helps you toward fellowship with others.
For someone who has been isolated for so long, even small steps can feel very large, and the Lord understands that even online interaction is difficult for you right now. You can begin where you are, with quiet time with the Father and the Son, speaking honestly in prayer as you have done, hearing His word, and letting Him remind you that you are valued and desired. As He strengthens you, He can prepare your heart for the next step He has for you, whether that is a brief conversation, a small connection, or simply being present among believers. He does not demand busy activity for Him. He desires your company, and He will give you grace at His pace.
Praying for you that God will fill you with the comfort of His presence, that you will know more deeply His love and His desire for fellowship with you, that He will bring healing to the places that feel anxious and weary, and that He will make you ready and give you peace as you consider fellowship with others. May He restore joy as you walk with Him, and may He open a gentle and safe way for you to experience fellowship in the body of Christ, where you are welcomed and cared for. In Jesus name, amen.
