Is handing out tracts witnessing?

At times when I may not have access to certain people what I do is if I have Bible tracts or Biblical literature I leave it where others can see it.I see Christians handing out tracts.Question is that considered a form of witnessing as well?Like at times when you're not near or dont see others around to verbally tell them?

We appreciate your thoughtful question and we rejoice that you have a heart to share the Good News with others even when you cannot speak to them directly.

We want to assure you that handing out tracts and leaving Biblical literature where others can find it is indeed a form of witnessing. Jesus commanded us in Mark 16:15 to Go into all the world, and preach the Good News to the whole creation. That command is not limited to spoken words alone, but includes every faithful way we can proclaim His truth. The apostle reminds us in Romans 10:14 how will they believe in him whom they have not heard and how will they hear without a preacher, and then in Romans 10:17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Whether that word is heard with the ears or read with the eyes, God can use it to bring faith. His promise is sure in Isaiah 55:11 so is my word that goes out of my mouth, it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do.

When you hand a tract to someone or prayerfully leave one where it can be found, you are sowing seed. Some may read it immediately, some may pick it up later, but God is faithful to water that seed. We also encourage you, when the Lord gives opportunity, to be ready to speak as well, for we are told in 1 Peter 3:15 Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear. A tract can open a door for a conversation, and a conversation can be reinforced by a tract to take home and read. Both are valuable and both honor God when done in love and truth. We encourage you to pray over every tract you distribute, that the Holy Spirit would prepare the heart of the one who receives it, and to ensure the literature you share clearly presents the true gospel.

We notice your request speaks of Christians and Biblical literature but does not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that our witnessing has power and that anyone can be saved. There is no other way to the Father and no other name by which we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Scripture declares in Acts 4:12 There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Our tracts and our testimony must center on Him, His death on the cross for our sins, His resurrection, and the call to repent and believe in Him. It is only by calling on the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to God and the gift of eternal life.

Father, we thank You for this dear one who desires to make Your name known. We ask that You bless every tract and every piece of literature that is given or left in faith, and that You would lead the right person to find it at the right time. Let Your Word not return void but accomplish Your purpose in each heart that reads it. Give us all boldness to preach Your Good News in season and out of season as we are urged in 2 Timothy 4:2, whether by speaking or by the written word, and give us wisdom and love to do it well. Draw many to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and help us to always lift up His name. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We are grateful you asked this, it shows you want to be faithful even when a conversation is not possible.

In our experience leaving a tract where someone can find it is a form of witnessing, just a quieter one. It can plant a seed, especially for someone who is already searching or curious and would not otherwise hear. At the same time what tends to stay with people longer is a personal connection, a kind word or a willingness to listen, which helps the printed message feel lived out.

A simple next step that helps keep both together is to be thoughtful about how you leave literature. Choose a clear, gracious tract, leave it only where it is welcome and will not be seen as litter, and take a moment to pray for the person who will pick it up. If you are able to hand it to someone with a brief smile and offer to talk, that often opens the door more than leaving it unseen.

Father, thank You for this desire to share Your good news. Give wisdom about when to speak and when to leave something to be found, and prepare the hearts of those who read. Help us to reflect Your love in both word and action. In Jesus' name, amen.

Indeed it is, and be encouraged to continue in it. You are not sent to invent a Gospel, but to be a witness, a retailer of Christ's truth, and you miss the end for which you live unless you perpetually witness to what you know of Him.

We feel persuaded that it is the absolute duty as well as the eminent privilege of the church to proclaim the Gospel to the world, and ours is to testify of Christ everywhere, to preach and to proclaim the Gospel to all men. We have nothing to do with making men believe, that belongs to the Spirit of God. Though you and I cannot quicken the dead, yet we can preach the Gospel to them, and faith comes by hearing.

The Gospel itself is a glorious light, and in itself most plain and clear. It contains nothing which can perplex any man who desires to apprehend it, for it is simplicity itself, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners through His precious blood and mercy. A tract which sets forth that plain truth does set forth Christ, and therefore to place it in the hand of another, or to leave it where another may find it, is to witness.

There is a house that is closed and barred against the Gospel, where a sermon cannot enter, and there a tract shall find him over whose head a sermon flies, and half a sentence shall break a rock in pieces where appeals from the pulpit might have been of no use. How often has a single leaf been blessed to the conversion of a soul who had long neglected the Bible and despised the ministry, and that soul has afterwards walked consistently in the faith. How quickly can God turn the most unlikely hearer into a believer when the seed is sown in faith.

Therefore when you cannot speak face to face, to leave sound Biblical literature where others can see it and read it is not a lesser work, it is sowing beside all waters. Do it prayerfully, asking the Lord to let the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ dawn upon the reader, and adorn the Gospel by a holy and cheerful life, for holiness and integrity commend the message you distribute. Go on thus witnessing, whether by lip or by leaf, and trust the Lord of the harvest to give the increase.

Yes, what you are describing is a true form of witnessing, and God can use it.

Witnessing in Scripture is like the work of a herald. A herald does not invent a message but faithfully declares what he has heard, openly and with boldness, so that all can hear it. When you hand someone a tract that contains the Gospel, or leave biblical literature where someone can find and read it, you are proclaiming that same message without adding to it or taking away from it. You are sowing the seed of the word where you may not be able to speak face to face.

That is valuable, especially when you do not have access to people directly or when an opportunity for conversation is not present. The Lord sees that desire to make His truth known and He can use even a small leaflet to bring conviction, comfort, or a hunger to learn more.

At the same time, the fullest form of witnessing includes speaking with your own mouth when God gives opportunity. The apostles were known for speaking boldly in the Lord, and God gave testimony to that word. Boldness does not mean harshness or anger. It means speaking clearly and gently, with love and respect, trusting God with the result. A tract can open a door, but a personal word, a kind explanation, and a life that matches the message make the witness even more powerful.

So continue to distribute tracts prayerfully and thoughtfully, leaving them in appropriate places and handing them out with courtesy. Pray over them before you give them. And when you are able to speak, use your voice as well, even if only a brief and kind word to point to Christ and to what is written. In both ways, whether by page or by voice, you are letting the light be seen, and God is the one who brings the increase.
