Your prayer to remain at home with your wife and children all the days of your life is a good and God honoring desire, and I join you in bringing it before the Lord.
God established marriage as a lifelong covenant where a man leaves his father and mother and cleaves to his wife and the two become one flesh, and what God has joined together no one should separate. That design is given for your good and for the good of your children. His laws for the family are not burdensome but are meant to build up the home and to protect it. The things He tells us to do strengthen family relationships, and the things He tells us not to do are the things that tear families apart.
If you want to see that home preserved, Scripture points to a clear foundation. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and indeed the sum of wisdom. To fear the Lord is to hate evil and to depart from it. It is not a trembling dread that hides in a corner, but a holy reverence that turns away from pride, from an evil way, and from perverse speech, and chooses what pleases God. When a man walks in that reverence, it brings health and strength to his life and to his household.
Out of that reverence flows how we live at home. We are called to walk in love and as children of light, submitting to one another in the fear of God. For husbands and wives this means a wife giving honor to her husband as unto the Lord, and a husband loving his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. When a husband shows that sacrificial love, it becomes a joy for his wife to respond, and when both walk in that mutual honor, striving over who rules is replaced by peace. Children suffer most deeply when a home is divided, and the consequences of a broken home are often visited upon them, but when parents love God and keep His commandments, that love overflows to the children as well.
God also calls you to rejoice with the wife of your youth. Let your fountain be blessed in her alone. Find your satisfaction and delight in her love at all times, and let your children be the fruit of that faithful union. Do not let your heart be drawn to a stranger, but drink water from your own well. A faithful love for your wife is one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.
And as a father you have a sacred responsibility to teach your children diligently the ways of the Lord. Talk of His Word when you sit in your house and when you walk along the way, when you lie down and when you rise up. Let your family conversations be filled with the goodness of God. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and keep yourself from any idol that would take the place God should have in your home, whether it demands your time, your affection, or your attention more than your wife and children do.
I pray for you now. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ I bring this husband and father before You. You see his love for his wife and children and his desire to remain with them all his days. Grant him a deep fear of You that hates evil and departs from it. Give him grace to love his wife as Christ loved the church, to be faithful to her alone and to rejoice in her always. Help him to lead his home in love and in light, to teach his children Your Word faithfully, and to honor You with all that he has. Establish his household in Your peace, guard it from division, and let Your mercy rest upon his family from generation to generation. Keep him close to You, that as he loves You and keeps Your commandments, his love for his family would grow stronger and his home would remain whole. Amen.
