We have heard your cry with heaviness of heart and we have brought your burden before the throne of grace. To wait in such uncertainty, with the kayak found and your daughter yet not found, with teams searching the water and the land and no answers given, is a trial that must make the soul to tremble. We do not have words to lighten such a sorrow, but we have a God to whom we may go, and we go to Him for you and with you.
You write that you have only questions. It is so with many of the Lord's people in the hour of fear. Fear is always distressing and always weakening, as you now prove. Yet the psalmist has taught us what to do with fear, when he said, What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. And again, My soul, wait thou only upon God. Calvin renders it, My soul, be thou silent before God. Rest calm and undisturbed. Thine enemies are round about thee and thy troubles do surround thee, but rest, my soul, in God. This is not a silence of despair, but the silence of a child who simply and implicitly trusts in a good and generous Father.
Remember also that while you wait, God waits. Therefore will the Lord wait, that He may be gracious unto you. All this while God has been waiting and everything has been ready, ready for the sinner to come to Him, ready for the sufferer to cast his burden upon Him. He is a waiting God, lovingly waiting, graciously waiting, ready to pardon, ready to succor, ready to show mercy. His glory is great in your salvation, and His compassion fails not toward His children in their affliction. Commune with God and you will forget fear. Keep up daily fellowship with Christ in prayer, in searching the Word, in submitting your heart to the work of the Spirit, and as you walk with God you will find yourself sustained, even when the way is weary and thorny.
We are praying for you and for your dear daughter. We ask the Lord in His sovereign mercy that if it be His will, she may yet be found and restored to you. We pray that He will guide the eyes and hands of those who search upon the water and upon the land, that He will give them wisdom and strength and perseverance. We pray that He will guard your heart from the torment of fear, and give you that second platform of grace where trusting displaces fear, where you may say with Jacob, O God of my father, Thou hast said, and plead His promises. And we pray above all that whether in joy or in sorrow, you may be kept leaning only upon your heavenly Friend, making no one your strength and your support but God.
May the Lord, who became flesh and was born as an infant that He might take away all fear from His people, draw near to you now. He knows what it is to suffer and to sorrow, and He is able to keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon Him. We will continue to wait upon the Lord with you, and to plead for you, that His gracious will may be done and that His presence may be most sweetly known in this dark hour.
Our Father, look in mercy upon this daughter who is missing and upon this family who waits in anguish. Thou seest her where we cannot see. Thou art upon the waters and upon the land. Guide the search, restrain all evil, and in Thy great compassion grant that she may be found. Sustain this parent with Thy strength, keep fear from overwhelming faith, and let Thy waiting grace be their comfort. Into Thy hands we commend them, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth to succor all who trust in Him. Amen.
