We love how you have already drawn out the heart of this verse, that our steadfastness is not rooted in our own resolve but in the fact that God Himself is our Teacher.

We see in our own spiritual journey that God has taught us in many gracious ways. He teaches us through His living Word, for Jesus is the Word made flesh and the Bread of Heaven who sustains us. As it is written John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God and John 1:14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. He teaches us through the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised would be our Counselor. As Jesus said in John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you. He teaches us also through His gentle correction, through His providence, through trials that refine us, and through the fellowship of faithful believers who speak His truth in love. This is the fulfillment of the promise in Isaiah 54:13 All your children will be taught by Yahweh; and great will be the peace of your children. When we look back we can see His fingerprints, how He has kept us from departing when we might have wandered, how He has illuminated our path when we were confused, for Psalm 119:105 says Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

There is a blessed reason why the psalmist could say, I have not departed from thy judgments, and that reason is, for thou hast taught me. He does not trace his steadfastness to his own strength of will, nor to the instruction of priests and elders only, but to the Lord himself as his Teacher. This is the mercy which makes obedience possible. We may have little strength, and a short muster roll, yet if God be our teacher we shall be kept steadfast in the faith, loyal to King Jesus, firm in the truths which Christ hath taught us by the Holy Ghost.

In what ways hath God been our Teacher? David could say, O God, thou hast taught me from my youth, and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. So hath the Lord dealt with many of us. He hath taught us by his Word, for wherein we speak according to Holy Scripture it is as much God's Word as if God himself spake. He hath taught us by his Spirit, whom the Father hath sent in the name of Christ to teach us all things and to bring to remembrance what the Lord hath said. He hath taught us by his works, putting object lessons before us, chastening us yet not casting us out, and making us to observe his hand in providence. And he hath taught us in the school of experience, where obedience itself becomes instruction. The path of obedience is generally a middle path, turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, and to persist in scrupulous obedience throughout life needeth more courage than the martyr evinceth when once and for all he giveth himself to the flame. Yet that exactness is the very essence of obedience, and God in his faithfulness keepeth his pupil in that narrow way.

How then shall we become more sensitive to his guidance in daily life? First, take heed how ye hear. Many are always hearing the Word and yet not obeying. Come to hear the Gospel as God's voice to us, and therefore as in God's presence with simple and lowly hearts, desiring to know his truth that ye may sincerely live it. Separate between what is God's and what is ours, and treasure that which is truly his. The great practical end of the Gospel is to bring the human heart into obedience to Christ, and no man is really saved unless he be in his heart obedient to him. Your obedience must be wholehearted and complete, not the obedience of a slave tuned to the crack of the whip, but the obedience of a child, the obedience of love, the obedience of faith.

Be ye also in the way of obedience active. The women who ran to bring the disciples word found as they went that Jesus met them. So shall ye find it. If ye be running on your Master's errands, ye shall have his cheering salutation and an assuring satisfaction that he is indeed risen and present. Be ye pupil teachers. What God hath taught you from your youth, declare ye with pen and voice, with holy fear mixed with great joy, for this keepeth the lesson fresh upon your own soul and maketh you to wonder more at his wondrous works.

If there be areas where ye are tempted to depart, remember that obedience is your business and providence is God's. Seek to know the Lord's will with deepest sincerity, not by casting lots nor by foolish hazards, but by searching his commandments as one who would find out matters he is not yet acquainted with. Such an obedience is deeply spiritual and it indicateth the truest sincerity.

May the Lord keep you steadfast, and give you yet more grace as the recompense of fidelity. And when ye have stood to the truth, solid and steadfast, others will give over disputing and come to inquire what your hope really is.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, thou hast taught us from our youth, continue thou to be our Teacher. Open our hearts by thy Holy Spirit to understand and apply thy Word, that we turn not aside to the right hand nor to the left. Give us the obedience of faith, cheerfully rendered in love, that we may not depart from thy judgments.
