Every corner of your existence cries out for the shelter of the Almighty. You ask where you must trust Him for protection and guidance, and I answer plainly: in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. First, trust Him with your very soul’s burden. The weight of your sin is a deep distress, and you will never lift it by your own straining. Look to the Son of God pouring out His life; trust Him, and your sins are gone in a moment. Do not keep a record of your faults as if the blood of Christ were insufficient, take God at His word. It is not presumption to believe His promise; it is true humility to rest where He has bid you rest.

Then, trust Him for the daily maze of your life. You must have guidance, or you will stumble at every step. The Word of God is your map, but the Spirit of God must be your living guide. Cry out, “Teach me Your statutes,” and do not rush ahead of His light. Haste is the author of much mischief. In your family, in your labor, in your smallest decisions, make the Lord your confidant. Hide nothing from Him, and wait upon Him, for those who wait do not go amiss. The God of the hills is also the God of the valleys; He who guided martyrs and reformers will guide a faithful parent, a striving worker, a trembling soul.

Trust Him, too, when the trials come as floods and flames. The Word promises you will pass through waters and walk through fire. Did you think your path would be soft while your Lord’s was thorny? The living God in whom you trust is your own God, the Holy One who cannot lie. When you are pressed down, do not charge God foolishly. The withdrawal of the light of His countenance is often the very means He uses to make you seek Him more earnestly. Like Job, hunt for Him until you find Him, for the trial proves your faith and makes it precious. He will bring you through none the worse, with the smell of fire not passing upon you.

Trust Him in all the work He sets before you. You cannot finish what He begins, but He always completes His own work. Whether your task seems as wide as a kingdom or as small as a class of little ones, the Lord is your strength. Go forward without boasting in your own arm, and never imagine that the God of our fathers has grown feeble. His arm is not shortened. The same God who answered David in distress hears you in the name of Jesus Christ, who has overcome the world. Trust then in life, in death, and in the felt absences, crying still, “My God, My God,” until the light breaks and you know He has been with you all along.
