In this week’s Torah portion “Ki Tavo” Hashem tells the children of Israel that when they enter the Land of Israel they should divide into two groups. The Levites should face Mt. Gerizim and state the Blessings and then turn toward Mt. Eval to say the curses. "What is odd," says Rav ### ztâ€l, "is that the Torah tells us that they should build an Alter on Mt. Eval and joyously celebrate and eat the Shlamim Offering. Shouldn't this be done on Mt. Gerizim, the mountain where they received the Blessings?â€

Rav ### answers that it is the fear of punishment that keeps us away from transgressions. The promise of reward may not help if the evil inclination can convince us that the joy of the transgression is more worthwhile than the reward for avoiding it. Accordingly, it is the curses that drive us to fulfill our destiny. Therefore if we need to choose a mountain to celebrate on, it is the mountain where we receive the curses.
