In Thankfulness

How often do we see that a delay, a seeming oversight, becomes the very instrument of God's tender care! You have tasted this truth in your own body, and you recount it with a gratitude that is fitting. The physician's slowness drove you to your records; your gathering of those records put the old report into your hands; and a danger that lay hidden, a thing that could have brought great peril under the knife, was uncovered not by the skill of men but by the providence that watches over you. Your mother's words were true, and they are true again tonight: the hand of the Lord has been upon you for protection.

But let us not stop at marveling over the body. If you see God's care so clearly in the framing of a CT scan and the timing of appointments, how much more should you trust His care for your soul? The same Lord who numbers the hairs of your head and notes the fall of a sparrow has permitted this pain and this fear to visit you. Do not despise it. The body's affliction is a stern teacher; it reminds us that we are dust, that our breath is a vapor, and that we must cling to the only true life. The fear you feel is not a sign of weak faith, but a call to press closer to the One who conquered death. Even the Apostle trembled and feared for his flock, not because he doubted God, but because he knew the storms that threaten us. So let this trial brace your soul, not break it. Let it blow away the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches, which so often choke the word, and make you cling to Christ alone.

You did well to remind your father of the fire and the deliverance. Such memorials of God's mercy are stones we set up, like the patriarchs, to mark where the Lord met us. Tell the story again. Let your heart be warmed by it. But do not merely recall the past deliverance; let it build in you a steadfast hope for the present. The same God who sat on your shoulder then is not now grown weary or distant. He sees the two hernias. He sees the frailty of your lungs. He knows every fear that knots your stomach. And He is able to carry you through the operations, whether one or two, and to bring you out into peace.

I will join my prayers to yours in the name of Jesus. Only do this: when the pain presses, when the mind runs ahead to dark possibilities, turn it swiftly back to praise. The devil loves to paint a future full of ruin to distract you from the God who holds that future. But you have a weapon: the memory of the pajamas, the Solarcaine, the unburned skin. That was not a small thing; it was a pledge. And this discovery now is another pledge. He who granted you to find the hidden danger will not abandon you in its remedy. Stand firm, give thanks in all things, and let the name of the Lord be blessed.

Your story is a profound testimony to the kind of providence that only becomes clear when you look back and connect the dots. What you first experienced as a frustrating delay, a doctor who seemed to drag his feet, was actually God giving you the time and the reason to go hunting through your own records. That detail you uncovered, the Bochdalek hernia, was an incidental finding buried in an old scan. For years it sat there, noted and forgotten, until the waiting drove you to gather your history and read it with your own eyes.

This is exactly the kind of wisdom that begins with the fear of the Lord. Not the fear that makes you tremble in panic, but the reverential awe that recognizes His hand is on every detail. When you fear the Lord, you start to see knowledge as more than facts on a page. It becomes the sum of understanding wrapped up in trusting Him. You did the practical work, you were prudent, but you weren’t motivated merely by anxiety. You were moved by a desire to be a good steward of your health, and God used that. The enemy loves to use fear to make us react poorly or to paralyze us. But faith and fear cannot occupy the same space. Where you might have been swallowed by the terror of a serious finding, you instead saw the unmistakable fingerprints of God.

Your mother’s words from your childhood, spoken after the flame touched your pajamas but left your skin untouched, ring true again tonight. It wasn’t a quaint saying; it was a declaration of a spiritual reality. The consciousness of God’s presence is the most powerful antidote to being scared. When David walked through the valley of the shadow of death, he didn’t deny the danger. He declared he would fear no evil precisely because God was with him. You are facing a valley of your own right now, with your lungs, your pain, and the prospect of two surgeries. The Lord who kept the fire from consuming you as a little girl is the same Lord who orchestrated three months of waiting so a hidden danger would be shouted from the rooftops for your surgeon to see.

It is natural to still feel the weight of it, to be scared and in pain while you wait for what comes next. But do not let the fear of the unknown future drive out the memory of what God has just done. Remember the Lord. He is your confidence. He has already proven He is going before you to fight for you, just as He did for His people when they faced overwhelming chariots. Your dad couldn’t get over the story tonight, and neither should you. Let this be the moment you stop and meditate on His greatness until awe replaces the dread. You have seen His care. Now stand in that reverential fear, hate the evil of despair, and trust that the God who was sitting on your shoulder then has never once stepped away.

We are deeply moved by your story of God’s protection and provision, both in your childhood and now as you navigate this challenging medical journey. Your testimony of His faithfulness—how He used even the delays and setbacks to reveal what needed to be seen—is a powerful reminder of His sovereignty. It is no coincidence that you had those records in hand or that you were led to uncover the Bochdalek hernia before it became a crisis. We rejoice with you in seeing His hand at work, even in the midst of fear and uncertainty.

We continue to stand with you in prayer, lifting up your health, your peace, and your trust in the Lord as you face the road ahead. May He grant you strength in your weakness, wisdom for your doctors, and comfort in His presence. If this new CT scan brings clarity or if the path forward becomes clearer, we would love to celebrate with you. If the wait continues or the journey grows heavier, know that we are still here, interceding on your behalf. Whatever comes, we pray you would feel the weight of His peace, just as your mother’s words reminded you so many years ago—God is sitting on your shoulder.

May He bless you with His nearness, His healing, and His hope as you walk this path in faith. We pray all these things in Jesus’ Name.
