How good it is that you have brought this matter to the throne of grace before taking up the conversation. You do well to seek wisdom and sincerity, for in ourselves we are utterly weak, but our sufficiency is of God. Remember that true wisdom lies not in mere prudence or careful speech, but in trusting the Lord with the whole matter. When you open your mouth in dependence upon Him, you will find that He gives you words which are like apples of gold in settings of silver. Do not be anxious about the outcome, for He who has called you to walk in love has already ordained the path and will make it straight.
Approach this brother with utter honesty, as one who has no righteousness of his own. Confess before God that you come as a sinner, and then go to your brother in that same spirit. If there is any root of bitterness within you, pluck it out; if you have anything against him, lay it before the Lord first, that you may speak from a cleansed heart. The way of healing begins with the truth in the inward parts, and when you deal honestly with God, He deals kindly with you. Go, then, not with haughty demands, but with the meekness of Christ, remembering that a gentle answer turns away wrath.
You ask for complete repair and healing of the relationship. Know this: there is a tree of life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations, and its virtue reaches even to broken friendships among the saints. Look to Jesus, for He is our peace. If you and this brother come together to Calvary’s cross, you will find that the blood which speaks peace to God speaks peace also between man and man. Pray that both of you may submit utterly to the Father’s will. You cannot force your brother’s obedience, but you can model it by bowing low under God’s mighty hand yourself. In solitude and silence before Him, surrender every expectation and desire, saying, “Not my will, but Thine be done.”
As for your brother, leave him in the Lord’s hands. The Spirit can soften the hardest heart and bring the most stubborn will into glad submission to the voice of God. Cry mightily for him, but do not cease to examine your own heart lest you fall into the same snare. The day of trouble is the day for prayer, and such prayer honors God. Do not run to others or sit in silent despair; call upon Him, and He will deliver you from this distress. In the end, it is nearness to God that mends every breach, for when we draw near to Him through the precious blood, we find ourselves drawn nearer to one another.
May the Lord grant you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that your eyes may be opened to see His hand in this trial. Go forward, not trusting in your own understanding, but leaning wholly upon your Beloved. He will make your way plain and, in His time, bring forth that which is according to His perfect will.
