See well to it that your conversation is bathed in prayer and steeped in the honesty which the Lord requires. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart, and He desires truth in the inward parts. Therefore, go not forth with a polished pretense, a fair speech conceived in the flesh, but bow your soul before the Majesty on high and let your confession be of the sort that dares to say, "Search me, O God, and know my heart." For it is in coming to God as we actually are, in Christ Jesus, that we find grace to deal sincerely with our brother. Rest not in a superficial peace, but let the Spirit plow the deep furrows of your spirit, that the words you speak may be sown in integrity and watered with the tears of genuine humility.
This difficult path upon which you are set is precisely the ground where trust in God must become your only wisdom. It is not in the sharpness of your argument, nor in the careful arrangement of your case, that success will be found, but in a simple, entire reliance upon Him who works all things after the counsel of His own will. Be not rash, nor yet idle, as though God required nothing of your prudence, but go forward in the calm frame of a man who has committed his way unto the Lord. Your own wisdom will falter and your own strength will fail, but to the soul that trusts wholly in the covenant-keeping God, there comes a quietness of spirit which can face the tempest without fear. Believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, and you shall find that Christ Himself is made unto you wisdom.
And what of the healing for which you yearn? Look away from the poor, frayed threads of your own effort and fix your gaze upon the Tree of Life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. The balm for wounded relationships flows down from the exalted Savior, and not from the bitter cisterns of human contention. Your brother's heart lies in the hand of the Lord, and He alone can make it pliable to the voice of His Spirit. It is your part to stand still and see the salvation of God, your speech seasoned with the salt of grace, your spirit bowed in complete submission to the Divine will. Remember, he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest. If you would have the scales fall from your brother's eyes, let your own walk be transparent in the light of Christ's presence. The best preparation for an important conversation is a fresh sight of the bleeding Prince of Peace, for in His wounds you will find your own spirit subdued and your tongue taught the language of redeeming love. Call upon Him in this day of trouble, and He will hear; glorify Him by trusting His power to mend what man has broken.
