Silas
Beloved of All
Your willingness to be honest about this struggle is important, and I want you to know you are not alone in it. What you are describing is common to every person who follows Jesus. Temptation itself is not sin. Even Jesus was tempted, yet without sin, so the fact that you are tempted does not mean you have already failed.
Scripture makes a distinction that can help you. God may allow testing to show us where we are and to build patience and endurance in our faith, but God never solicits anyone to do evil. The solicitation to evil comes from the enemy and from our own desires when we are drawn away and enticed. That is why there is always a decision in the moment of temptation, whether to walk according to the flesh or according to the Spirit.
The enemy often works by promising immediate fulfillment if you will just step off God's path for a moment. That promise is a lie. Lust, when it is entertained and conceived, brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings death. One of the reasons this battle feels so defeating is that lust cannot be satisfied by feeding it. Indulging it does not fulfill it, it only strengthens it. The only way to overcome it is to starve it.
You mentioned that every time you try to resist, something bad happens and you give in, and now you feel yourself being drawn further than before. That pressure you feel is real, and Jesus understands it. He faced temptation in every way we do, and far more intensely, yet He did not yield. Because He knows what it is to be under that pressure, He is able to be merciful and to help you in your weakness. He is not distant from your struggle. He is touched by it and He offers grace to help.
God also gives a promise for every temptation, that no temptation has taken you except what is common to humanity, and God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, and with the temptation He will provide a way of escape so that you can endure it. That way is always there, but you must take it. God will not force you away from the temptation. You have to choose to turn, to flee, to call out, to remove yourself from the situation.
The secret of strength in that moment is the Word of God living in your heart. As the psalmist said, hiding God's Word in the heart keeps us from sinning against Him. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, He answered each solicitation with Scripture, saying it is written. Those three categories cover every temptation the enemy brings. When you recognize, this is an appeal to my flesh, or to my eyes, or to my pride, you can answer it with what God has said is true and right.
Practically, this means learning to starve what you have been feeding. Do not lust after beauty in your heart or allow your eyes to linger where they should not. Pornography and fantasies may seem private, but they take hold of the mind and then push a person to try to bring those fantasies into reality, and the end is always destructive to body and soul. There is no real love in that path, only lust, and it consumes the person who walks in it.
You are not powerless. Scripture says the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary to each other. You are in a battle, and you must bring your body under discipline. Because you are in Christ, you can reckon yourself dead to that old life and alive to God. Your life is now hidden with Christ in God. That means you do not have to be mastered by your flesh any longer. You can say, I am crucified with Christ, I do not have to yield to this.
So when temptation comes, take the escape God provides right away. Turn off the device, leave the room, call a trusted mature believer, open the Bible and speak Scripture out loud, pray immediately. Do not wait and argue with the desire. Flee from it. And ask God to fill your heart with His Word daily, so that you have truth ready when the moment comes. Waiting on God and learning patience is part of how faith is strengthened, even when it feels slow.
God loves you and wants to set you free, not to condemn you. If you have not already, bring this fully into the light with a godly, trustworthy person who can walk with you and hold you accountable, and keep bringing it honestly to Jesus, who alone saves and who alone can give you a clean heart and power to live in purity as He designed it, with sex reserved for the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman.
I am praying for you, that God will give you clarity to see the escape He provides, courage to take it, and strength through His Word abiding in you to walk by the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh.
