I'm getting urges to go back to video games

We hear your struggle with these urges to return to video games and we want to stand with you in prayer for strength and self-control in this area.

We understand that video games in themselves are not necessarily sinful, but when they begin to consume our time, thoughts, and affections they can become an idol and a distraction from the purpose God has for us. We are called to steward our time well and to do all things for the glory of God. As it is written, Look therefore carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16. And also, All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but not all things build up. 1 Corinthians 10:23 and All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything. 1 Corinthians 6:12.

These urges you feel are a temptation, and God understands temptation. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13. The way of escape often comes through taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5, and setting our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2. We encourage you to consider what need the games were filling for you, whether it was escape, boredom, achievement, or community, and to bring that need to the Lord and to godly community instead. Replace that time intentionally with prayer, the Word, fellowship, service, work done heartily as for the Lord, and healthy rest. The fruit of the Spirit includes self-control, Galatians 5:22-23, and God has given us a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7.

Regarding your mention of needing text to redact, we do not have private content to provide for that purpose, but we want to help you redeem this moment and use your mind for what is good. Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And also, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the urges and the battle in the mind, and You are faithful to provide a way of escape. We ask that You fill this heart with Your peace and purpose, and help them to take every thought captive to Your truth. Grant them strength to resist what would master them and wisdom to redeem their time for Your glory. Help them to find joy and fulfillment not in virtual worlds but in walking with You, in Your Word, in prayer, and in fellowship with other believers who can encourage and hold them accountable. Create in them a hunger for what is true and pure and profitable, and bear in them the fruit of self-control by Your Holy Spirit. If there has been idolatry of time or escape, we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus, and we pray they would know deeply that Jesus is their way, their truth, and their life. Draw them closer to Jesus each day and let their life bring glory to You in all things. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to stay in the Word daily, to pray when the urge comes, to reach out to a trusted pastor or mature Christian friend for accountability, and to fill your schedule with godly work and rest so there is less room for old patterns to return. God is with you in this battle and He is able to keep you.

Thank you for reaching out and naming this so honestly. Feeling a strong pull back toward gaming after stepping away can be discouraging, and it makes sense you would want support right in that moment.

We have found that urges often grow stronger in isolation. Having another person who knows what you are facing and can check in honestly makes it much harder for the old pattern to quietly take over again. It is not about being watched, but about not carrying this alone, and having someone to give you steady, caring feedback.

One simple next step that helps many people is to choose one trusted friend, mentor, or pastor today and let them know you are feeling the pull. Ask if they would be willing to check in with you daily for the next week, even just a brief text, and agree ahead of time what you will do when an urge hits, like stepping away from the screen, going for a walk, or calling them. Putting that plan in place now gives you something clear to do before the urge gets louder.

We are praying for you and standing with you in this.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift up our friend to You. You see the struggle and the desire to walk a different path. Grant clarity and strength for today, and the encouragement of not walking alone. Lead toward wise choices and surround with supportive people. Give rest and hope as You continue Your work. Amen.

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing us with another day, and for all you do for all of us. All glory and honor belongs to you Father. May our Heavenly Father draw you near to Him and grant you peace of mind. I lift this prayer up on your glory Father God and ask that you grant your perfect will. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

““But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭17‬:‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Your willingness to name this urge before the Lord is itself a mercy, for it shows that humble self distrust which shrinks from the conflict rather than presuming upon its own strength. The prayer which our Lord taught us does not say leave us in temptation, but pleads, Lead us not into temptation, and that prayer breathes a true courage, for the suppliant calmly looks the temptation in the face and dreads only the evil which it may work in him.

Temptation in itself is a thing very dangerous. Trials and distress in themselves are so perilous that it is right for the Christian to pray to be spared from too great trials, lest they overcome his patience, his faith or his steadfastness. Though God brings great benefit out of our being led into temptation, for all temptation is in fact trial from God, still there is more than trial in it, and you must look at it just as it stands. God does at times in providence put men into such positions that they are severely tried, and at times He leaves them to feel the withdrawal of grace, and for that reason we must not for any reason desire to be tried or afflicted, but must pray again and again, Lead us not into temptation.

Yet the man who prays Lead us not into temptation and then goes into it is a liar before God. Never go into temptation. If the screen, the idle hour, the old companions or the secret place where the snare was once laid is the pinnacle upon which the enemy whispers to you, do not linger there. It may seem a strange thing that one who is afraid of falling should be tempted to cast himself down, but such is the subtlety of the adversary with those who stand in high places. A man may be tempted and yet hate the temptation, and then there is no sin in it to him, but to dally with it and to place yourself where it can speak is to presume.

Therefore give yourself to honest self examination. Set apart special seasons to discover whether things are right between God and your soul, not with that mock humility which is the offspring of self conceit and would be offended if another said the same of you, but with true self knowledge. Remember that without Christ you can do nothing, not even the little acts of grace for which in proud self conceit you think yourself already equipped. Every grain of self strength is a grain of weakness, and every particle of self reliance is but poison infused into the veins. Let self distrust be your guard, and let Lead us not into temptation and Deliver us from evil be your constant prayer.

Worldlings do not understand the terms on which we are linked with Christ. To them Christ is one who lived long ago and then died, but to you He is alive, He is your familiar Friend. Look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things at once. When the urge rises, look to Him, tell Him you fear falling, ask Him to keep you, and long for His presence more than for any fleeting amusement. Fill the hour which was once given to vanity with useful service, for there is a temptation when much is to be done to be cumbered as Martha was, and there is also a temptation to be idle, and both are to be watched against.

May the Lord give you grace to watch and to pray, to remove far from you the occasion of sin, to redeem the time, and to find your joy not in that which passes away but in communion with the living Christ. Trust not in your own resolve, but in His strength alone, who is able to keep you from falling.
