The Greatest Trial on Record
Christ’s suffering trial demands you choose him as King or bear the guilt of rejecting him.
We have heard your question and we want to seek understanding together regarding what our Lord Yeshua, Jesus Christ, meant when He spoke to the Pharisees.

This account is found in John 10:30-36. Jesus had just said, I and the Father are one. John 10:30. The Jews took up stones to stone Him, saying, We don't stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy: because you, being a man, make yourself God. John 10:33. They understood clearly that Jesus was claiming to be God. In response, Jesus answered them, Isn't it written in your law, I said, you are gods? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came and the Scripture can't be broken, do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, You blaspheme, because I said, I am the Son of God? John 10:34-36.

He is quoting Psalm 82:6 where it says, I said, You are gods, all of you are sons of the Most High. Psalm 82:6. In that Psalm, God is speaking to unjust judges and rulers of Israel, those to whom the word of God came and who were given authority to judge on His behalf. They were called gods not because they were divine by nature, but because they represented God's authority and received His law to administer justice. They were failing in that duty, and the Psalm goes on to say, However you shall die like men, and fall like one of the rulers. Psalm 82:7, showing they were mere men who would be judged.

When Jesus says the Scripture can't be broken, He is affirming the absolute authority, truthfulness and permanence of God's Word. What is written cannot be annulled, set aside, or proven false. All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16. Heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will by no means pass away. Matthew 24:35.

His argument is from the lesser to the greater. If the holy Scriptures could call mere men who received the word of God gods without that being considered blasphemy, how much more is it not blasphemy for Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, the true Son of God, to say I am the Son of God. He was not denying His deity but rather exposing their inconsistency and affirming it. He was showing that their charge of blasphemy had no ground even from their own law.

We must also gently correct a common misuse of this passage. Some false teachers use this verse to claim that men are little gods or can become divine. That is not what Jesus taught. There is only one true God, and we are His creation. Before me there was no God formed, neither will there be after me. Isaiah 43:10. We are to worship the Creator, not claim to be Him. Jesus is uniquely God the Son, and it is only through Him we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. We are thankful you called Him Lord Yeshua, for that is Jesus, and we rejoice that you know His name.

We pray together for wisdom and understanding for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We thank You for Your Word which cannot be broken and which endures forever. We thank You for sending Jesus, whom You sanctified and sent into the world to be our Savior. We ask that You grant our dear friend understanding as he studies Your Word, that he may see the beauty and authority of Scripture and the full deity and glory of Christ. Guard him from error and from teachings that twist Your Word to claim what You have not said. Lead him by Your Holy Spirit into all truth, and deepen his faith in Jesus as Lord and God. Help him to treasure Your Word and to trust fully in Jesus for salvation and life. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

We encourage you to continue reading the full context of John 10 and Psalm 82 prayerfully, asking the Holy Spirit to give you insight. The Scriptures consistently reveal Jesus as one with the Father, fully God and fully man, our only hope of salvation.

Thank you for asking about this - it's a passage that trips up a lot of readers at first.

What Jesus is doing there is answering the Pharisees on their own ground. They were about to stone Him for claiming to be one with the Father, calling it blasphemy. So He points them back to their own Scriptures, to the psalm where God addresses unjust judges and leaders as "gods" because they were given the responsibility to represent His justice and speak His law to the people.

His point is from the lesser to the greater. If those flawed leaders could be called gods in that limited, representative sense and the Scripture still stands as true and trustworthy - which is what He means by saying Scripture cannot be broken or undone - then how can they accuse Him, the One the Father set apart and sent into the world, for saying He is God's Son. He is not saying people are divine by nature, He is exposing their inconsistency and showing that His claim is far greater and true.

If you want to sit with it a bit more, we found it helps to read that psalm and then the whole conversation in John together in one sitting, slowly, noticing the accusation and how Jesus answers it. Talking it through with a pastor can also help it settle.

We are praying for you as you keep digging into His word.

Father, thank You for giving us Your word that is true and does not fail. Give our friend wisdom and clarity as they study, help them see Jesus for who He truly is, and draw them closer to You. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your question concerning our Lord's words in John 10:34 and 35 is one which has tried many minds, and it is well to look at it in its own context.

The Jews had taken up stones to stone Him, saying, Thou being a man makest thyself God. Our Lord answers them out of their own Scriptures, saying, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken, say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God?

He quotes Psalm 82:6, where the Lord speaks to unjust judges and rulers in Israel. They were called gods, not because they were divine by nature, but because they stood in the place of God as judges and magistrates, to speak and to act in His name and by His authority. The word there is Elohim, a title of office and representation. They were to dispense justice as those who should hear the word of God and declare it.

Our Lord's argument is from the lesser to the greater. If Scripture itself, which cannot be broken or loosed or made void, could give that high title to mere men who received a commission from God, without any charge of blasphemy, how much more is it fitting and true for Him to be called the Son of God, whom the Father Himself sanctified and sent into the world. He does not deny His Deity, He establishes it. These judges were gods by office only, and many of them were unholy men who would die like men and fall like one of the princes. But He is the Son by nature, one with the Father, holy and eternal.

And mark that blessed sentence in the midst, the scripture cannot be broken. By this our Lord sets His seal to the full authority and truthfulness of the written Word. What God hath spoken stands. It cannot be annulled, it cannot be proved false, it cannot be set aside to suit the cavils of men. Even a single word, such as ye are gods, must stand true in the sense in which the Holy Ghost intended it. How this should teach us to reverence every word of God and to receive the testimony concerning Christ with meekness and faith.

The Pharisees stumbled because they would not have Christ to be what He is. They were willing to allow that corrupt judges might be called gods, yet they would not allow that the Holy One sent from heaven should be the Son of God. So it is still. Men will allow many high titles to themselves, but they will not bow to the Lord Jesus.

May the Lord give you to see Him as He is, very God of very God, and yet the Word made flesh for our salvation, and to trust in Him alone for eternal life. For there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and happy is that man who falls at His feet and confesses Him Lord.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The passage you are asking about is John 10:34 to 36, where Jesus is speaking to the Jewish leaders who had taken up stones to stone Him for blasphemy because He had said, I and the Father are one.

He answers them by quoting Psalm 82:6, which in older translations reads, I said, ye are gods, and in modern language, you are gods, you are all sons of the Most High.

To understand His point you must see the context. In Psalm 82 God is speaking to the judges and rulers of Israel. They were given the word of God and the authority to judge the people in His name, to represent His justice on earth. Because they stood in the place of God as judges, God calls them gods and sons of the Most High. Yet the same psalm goes on to condemn them because they judged unjustly, and says they will die like mere men and fall like any prince. So the title was one of office and responsibility, not of divine nature.

Jesus reasons from the lesser to the greater. His argument is this. If God Himself in Scripture could call those who merely received the word of God gods, without that being considered blasphemy, and Scripture cannot be set aside or proven false, then how can you accuse Me of blasphemy when I say I am the Son of God. I am not merely one who received the word, I am the One whom the Father set apart and sent into the world, and My works prove it.

When He says Scripture cannot be broken, He means Scripture cannot be annulled, voided, or shown to be false. Its authority stands. It cannot be dismissed to suit an argument. Even a difficult verse like Psalm 82:6 remains true and must be understood rightly. What God has spoken will stand and will be fulfilled.

So Jesus is not teaching that every person is a god by nature, nor is He denying His own deity. He is using their own Scriptures to show their inconsistency. If they accept that Scripture can call human judges gods because of their office, they have no ground to stone Him for calling Himself the Son of God when He is consecrated by the Father, is one with the Father, and does the works of the Father before their eyes.

The call of the passage is to receive Him with a candid and willing mind, to hear His words and see His works, and to believe that He is indeed the Christ, the Son of God, through whom alone we have salvation and reconciliation with the Father.

I pray that the Lord will give you ears to hear and a heart to understand the Scriptures, that you will see more clearly the glory of Christ as the true Son of God, and that you will grow in confidence that all of God's Word is trustworthy and unbreakable. May He draw you closer to Himself as you continue to search the Scriptures which bear witness to Him.
