Zedekiah

Humble Servant of All
Is God in everything? Is God everywhere? My mom taught me that God's everywhere and all around us. Is this a biblical teaching rooted in scripture?

Eyes Opened
We are glad you asked this question and we appreciate the teaching your mother gave you, because it opens the door to a beautiful biblical truth about who God is.

Your mother is correct that God is everywhere, and this is firmly rooted in Scripture. The Bible teaches that God is omnipresent, meaning He is present everywhere at all times. We read in Psalm 139:7-10, Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me. And in Jeremiah 23:24, Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I can’t see him? says Yahweh. Don’t I fill heaven and earth? says Yahweh. Proverbs 15:3 also tells us Yahweh’s eyes are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good. There is nowhere in creation where God is not present and aware.

At the same time, the idea that God is in everything is not biblical if it means that everything is God or that God is the same as creation. That belief is called pantheism and the Bible clearly distinguishes the Creator from His creation. In Genesis 1:1 we learn God created the heavens and the earth, He is distinct and above what He made. Acts 17:24 says The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands. And Romans 1:25 warns against worshiping and serving the creature rather than the Creator. It is true that Acts 17:28 says For in him we live, and move, and have our being, and Colossians 1:17 says in him all things are held together, which means all creation depends on God for existence and is sustained by His power, but a tree or a rock or a person is not God Himself. God is present everywhere, but He is not everything.

The Bible also makes a distinction between God’s general presence everywhere and His special presence with His people. While God sees all and is present in all places, He dwells in a unique way with those who belong to Him through faith. And Hebrews 4:13 reminds us There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account, so His presence everywhere also means He sees both good and evil, though He does not approve of sin and calls us to holiness.

We notice your question did not mention Jesus, and we want to gently share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we can truly know God and have fellowship with Him. Even though God is everywhere, sin has separated us from Him, and we need reconciliation. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 teaches There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved as Romans 10:9 promises, and then God not only is around us but dwells within us by His Holy Spirit.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we thank You that You fill heaven and earth and that there is nowhere we can go where You are not present. We thank You that You see us, know us, and sustain all things by Your power. We ask that You give understanding to the one who asked this question, that they would know the difference between Your omnipresence and the false idea that creation itself is divine. Reveal Yourself as the holy Creator who is near to all who call upon You in truth. We pray that they would come to know You personally through Your Son Jesus Christ, that they would repent and believe and receive Your forgiveness and Your indwelling Spirit. Help them to walk in Your presence daily with reverence and comfort, knowing they are never alone. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We love that you are thinking carefully about what your mom taught you. That memory of her saying God is all around us is a tender gift, and you are right to want to understand it more deeply.

There is an important difference that helps here. The Bible does teach that God is present everywhere, that there is nowhere we go where He is not near and aware of us, and that He sustains everything He made. That is different from saying God is everything, as if a tree or the sky or we ourselves are God. Scripture presents God as distinct from His creation, the Maker who is close to what He made, not identical with it.

So your mom's heart was on solid ground, God really is everywhere and with you, but not in the way that everything is divine.

If this is stirring questions for you, a simple next step we have found helpful is to notice that nearness in prayer this week. When you are outside or sitting quietly, just talk to Him as the One who is already there, listening.

We pray for you now. Father, thank You for this curiosity and for a mother who planted seeds of faith. Help our friend know Your nearness in a real and personal way, grow in understanding of who You are, and feel Your presence as comfort and guidance. Lead them closer to You in Jesus' name, amen.

Basically no. God is not everything. Or one with the creation. I like to see God in everything thats beautiful though of it brings you closer to God yo appreciate the beauty of nature. But God is distinct from nature and from the universe. He is able to be present anywhere and everywhere he sees everything but thats not the same as being in his presence. The onnipotence of God is true. But I don't really know what the word means. God seems to be found in prayer and in scriptures. You can't find him in nature. Nature can't make us closer to God unless you count solitude and quiet as a means of getting in touch eith God through prayer and believing. Worshipping and acknowledging him. There are many teachings that this leads to that God is in everything and is everything and both distinctly himself but thats not really true because Gidcis distinctly his own self apart from the creation. And time and gravity and the universe is not actually Alive. The notion that the universe is alive is a sin because we cannot pray to it or worship it. There for the universe cannot be a living super being itself because then the universe itself would be God. But its not. We dont worship the universe we worship God. God is his own distinctly self. He was himself before the universe was created. He supersedes creation. He is sovereign. If the universe didn't exist at all he would still be.

Turning my reflection process inward without going after knowledge. I need go get away from strange hyped up knowledge about the paranormal or supernatural or cult like stuff and set my site's on something grounded like sxriptures. Prayer. The Bible. And real actual history. I've gotva hunger for real history. Im tired of conspiracy theories. I want real grounded thoughts ideas and reflections that can enliven me. That doesn't have to be some spectacular thing on the internet. Which lacks real grounded sober thinking.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

It is a precious and scriptural truth which your mother taught you, that God is everywhere and all around us, and you do well to search the Word to see if these things are so.

The Scripture plainly declares that there is no place where God is not. As it is written, "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there" Psalm 139:7-8. And again the Lord says, "Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord" Jeremiah 23:24. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good Proverbs 15:3, and in Him we live, and move, and have our being Acts 17:28.

This is what divines call the omnipresence of God. He works ever and everywhere. There is no place where God is not, and there is no moment when we are not absolutely dependent upon a present God. The true believer recognizes God everywhere, not as a distant deity but as One near at hand, hearing prayer, seeing the heart, sustaining all things by the word of His power.

Yet we must rightly divide this truth. To say God is everywhere is biblical. To say God is everything, or that God is in everything as if creation itself were God, is not biblical. That error is called pantheism and it confuses the Creator with His creation. Scripture teaches that God is distinct from His creation, though He is present throughout it. He is not contained by heaven and earth, for the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him 1 Kings 8:27, but He fills them with His presence, power and knowledge. All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do Hebrews 4:13.

This truth is worthy of perpetual remembrance, for though it is of universal force, it is much forgotten. If we remembered it aright, how it would comfort us in loneliness, for we are never alone. How it would restrain us from sin, for we cannot sin in secret. And how it would encourage us to pray, for He who is everywhere is always at hand to hear the cry of His child.

Your mother spoke truly according to the Word of God. Hold fast to that truth and let it lead you to seek Him not merely as a God around you, but as your God within you by faith in Christ Jesus. For the promise is that He will be our God and we shall be His people, and that is the choicest possession a soul can have.

Let us pray together. O Lord, who fillest heaven and earth, we thank Thee that Thou art not far from any one of us. Help this dear soul to know not only that Thou art everywhere, but to know Thee as present to forgive, to keep, and to comfort through Jesus Christ Thy Son. Teach us to live as those who walk ever before Thee, and grant us grace to remember Thy presence all our days. For Christ's sake, Amen.
