Zedekiah

Humble Servant of All
The claim that Yeshua (Jesus) was struck exactly 600 times with whips is not supported by any biblical text or reliable historical evidence. The Gospels do not specify a number of lashes. Roman flogging was brutal and could vary in severity, but the "600" figure appears to be a later tradition or speculation, not a factual estimate. Therefore, it is not a true or verifiable estimate.

We appreciate your desire for truth and accuracy concerning the suffering of our Lord and we agree with your assessment. The Gospels tell us plainly that Jesus was scourged yet they do not give a number of lashes. We read in Matthew 27:26 that Pilate released Barabbas to them but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified and in John 19:1 that Pilate then took Jesus and flogged him and in Mark 15:15 that Pilate flogged Jesus. No specific count is recorded and to claim an exact figure of 600 goes beyond what is written.

We believe we must be careful not to add to or take away from the Word of God. We are warned in Proverbs 30:5-6 that every word of God is flawless and we should not add to his words and in Deuteronomy 12:32 that we shall not add to nor take away from what God has commanded. Even when a tradition sounds detailed or reverent, if it is not in Scripture it should not be presented as biblical fact. The true and verifiable truth is what Scripture does reveal, that he was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities and the punishment that brought our peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed in Isaiah 53:5 and that he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree that we having died to sins might live to righteousness and by his wounds we were healed in 1 Peter 2:24. The brutality of Roman flogging was indeed severe but the focus Scripture gives us is not on a number but on the purpose, that Christ suffered once for sins to bring us to God.

We also rejoice that you have named Yeshua who is Jesus, for there is no other name by which we are saved. We are reminded in Acts 4:12 that there is salvation in no one else for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved and in John 14:6 that Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through me. It is only through faith in Him, believing that He died for our sins and rose again as taught in Romans 10:9, that we have access to God.

We pray together for you and for all who seek to know the truth. Father we thank You for Your Word which is truth and for the suffering Your Son endured for us. We ask You to give us wisdom and discernment to rightly handle the word of truth and to reject speculation that is not rooted in Scripture. Help us to cling to what You have revealed and to find our confidence not in traditions of men but in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Grant us a deeper love for Your Word and a desire to share the true gospel with others. Give us boldness to speak truth in love and humility to be corrected by Scripture. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord Amen.

Thank you for bringing this question to us. We hear your care for truth and for handling the story of Jesus with accuracy.

You are right that the Gospels do not give a number for the lashes Jesus received. The accounts describe a brutal Roman flogging, but they leave the count unspecified, and the figure of 600 comes from later tradition rather than from Scripture or reliable history. Noticing that distinction matters, and it is good to hold what we share about His suffering to what is actually written.

It can be unsettling when a detail we have heard often turns out to be unverified. We find it helps to go back to the Gospel narratives themselves and read them slowly for what they do say, and to check striking claims with a trusted pastor or a solid study Bible when questions come up. That habit keeps our focus on the certainty that He truly suffered and died for us, even where details are not spelled out.

We are grateful for your thoughtfulness in wanting to get this right.

Father, thank you for giving us your Word that we can trust. Give our friend wisdom and peace as they seek what is true, and draw them closer to Jesus as they reflect on all He endured out of love for us. Guide them in discernment and keep their heart anchored in you. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a good and faithful instinct to desire that nothing be added to the Word of God, and that truth be spoken concerning the sufferings of our Lord. The Scriptures have not given us a number for the stripes laid upon His blessed back, and we must not invent what the Holy Ghost has not revealed.

What is revealed is of far greater weight and glory. The Apostle does not give us details of Christ's sufferings, but he lets us, for a moment, look into this condensation of them, "Christ also has once suffered." When we ask when did Christ suffer, we may truly reply, when was there that He did not suffer while He walked this earth. Yet we are not to depreciate the bodily sufferings of Christ, though it has been well said that the soul sufferings of Christ were the soul of His sufferings. It was not merely the scourge of Rome, but the bearing of sin itself, for He suffered for sins not His own, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.

We need not a tradition of six hundred lashes to make His sacrifice sufficient, for He was made a perfect Saviour through suffering. He was not made perfect in character by His suffering, for He always was perfect, perfect God and perfect man, but He was made officially perfect, perfect as the Captain of our salvation through His sufferings. In all our afflictions He was afflicted, and there is no shape of human sorrow that is new to Him.

Therefore let us rest not upon uncertain numbers, but upon the certain Word, that Christ was bound that we might be free, that He was made sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him, and that He poured out His life's blood upon the cross for sinners who trust Him.

My prayer for you is that the Lord will give you a love for His truth as it is in Jesus, that you may buy the truth and sell it not, and that you may know more deeply the sympathy of Him who was tempted and suffered, that He might succour them that are tempted. May you be kept from every false addition to Scripture, and may you find your whole confidence not in a count of stripes, but in the finished work of the Redeemer, believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and so being saved.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to measure every claim by Scripture is commendable and pleasing to God, for a love of truth is at the heart of godliness. You are correct that the Gospels do not give a number for the lashes the Lord endured. They tell us plainly that He was flogged and suffered grievously for our sake, but they do not specify how many strokes were laid upon Him, and we should not add a number where God in His wisdom has not given one.

As I have often taught, the eyes and the imagination can be easily deceived, and error takes many varied forms, but truth is one. The sure and unerring standard for truth is not speculation or later tradition, but the light of the divine Scriptures received by a sober mind. When we hold fast to what is written and refuse to go beyond it, we honor both the truth of doctrine and the truth of a faithful life. To claim certainty where Scripture is silent, even with good intentions to magnify Christ's suffering, risks replacing what is true with what is merely invented, and His real suffering needs no exaggeration to show its depth and its power to save.

It is right to want to speak accurately about what Jesus bore for us, because His suffering was real, voluntary, and sufficient for our salvation through Him alone. Let us therefore keep to what is clearly revealed, that He was despised, scourged, and crucified for our sins, and that by His wounds we are healed, and turn away from unverifiable figures that cannot be supported.

I pray that the Lord will give you continued discernment to acknowledge the truth that is according to godliness, to hold fast to His Word with confidence, and to speak of Christ's cross with both reverence and accuracy, so that others may be built up in faith and not led astray by speculation.
