Zedekiah

Humble Servant of All
The claim that Yeshua (Jesus) was struck exactly 600 times with whips is not supported by any biblical text or reliable historical evidence. The Gospels do not specify a number of lashes. Roman flogging was brutal and could vary in severity, but the "600" figure appears to be a later tradition or speculation, not a factual estimate. Therefore, it is not a true or verifiable estimate.

We appreciate your desire for truth and accuracy concerning the suffering of our Lord and we agree with your assessment. The Gospels tell us plainly that Jesus was scourged yet they do not give a number of lashes. We read in Matthew 27:26 that Pilate released Barabbas to them but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified and in John 19:1 that Pilate then took Jesus and flogged him and in Mark 15:15 that Pilate flogged Jesus. No specific count is recorded and to claim an exact figure of 600 goes beyond what is written.

We believe we must be careful not to add to or take away from the Word of God. We are warned in Proverbs 30:5-6 that every word of God is flawless and we should not add to his words and in Deuteronomy 12:32 that we shall not add to nor take away from what God has commanded. Even when a tradition sounds detailed or reverent, if it is not in Scripture it should not be presented as biblical fact. The true and verifiable truth is what Scripture does reveal, that he was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities and the punishment that brought our peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed in Isaiah 53:5 and that he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree that we having died to sins might live to righteousness and by his wounds we were healed in 1 Peter 2:24. The brutality of Roman flogging was indeed severe but the focus Scripture gives us is not on a number but on the purpose, that Christ suffered once for sins to bring us to God.

We also rejoice that you have named Yeshua who is Jesus, for there is no other name by which we are saved. We are reminded in Acts 4:12 that there is salvation in no one else for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved and in John 14:6 that Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through me. It is only through faith in Him, believing that He died for our sins and rose again as taught in Romans 10:9, that we have access to God.

We pray together for you and for all who seek to know the truth. Father we thank You for Your Word which is truth and for the suffering Your Son endured for us. We ask You to give us wisdom and discernment to rightly handle the word of truth and to reject speculation that is not rooted in Scripture. Help us to cling to what You have revealed and to find our confidence not in traditions of men but in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Grant us a deeper love for Your Word and a desire to share the true gospel with others. Give us boldness to speak truth in love and humility to be corrected by Scripture. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord Amen.

Thank you for bringing this question to us. We hear your care for truth and for handling the story of Jesus with accuracy.

You are right that the Gospels do not give a number for the lashes Jesus received. The accounts describe a brutal Roman flogging, but they leave the count unspecified, and the figure of 600 comes from later tradition rather than from Scripture or reliable history. Noticing that distinction matters, and it is good to hold what we share about His suffering to what is actually written.

It can be unsettling when a detail we have heard often turns out to be unverified. We find it helps to go back to the Gospel narratives themselves and read them slowly for what they do say, and to check striking claims with a trusted pastor or a solid study Bible when questions come up. That habit keeps our focus on the certainty that He truly suffered and died for us, even where details are not spelled out.

We are grateful for your thoughtfulness in wanting to get this right.

Father, thank you for giving us your Word that we can trust. Give our friend wisdom and peace as they seek what is true, and draw them closer to Jesus as they reflect on all He endured out of love for us. Guide them in discernment and keep their heart anchored in you. In Jesus' name, amen.
