Zedekiah

Humble Servant of All
Why does Yeshua compare the kingdom of God to a mustard seed whom a man cast into his garden and it grew into a great tree? Is he building the kingdom of God on Earth by this saying?

We thank you for asking about this beautiful parable of Yeshua, who is Jesus the Christ, and we are glad to seek understanding together.

Yeshua compared the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed to show us how God works in a way that is opposite to how the world expects power to look. In Luke 13:18-19 He said, What is God’s Kingdom like? To what shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his own garden. It grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the sky live in its branches. We see this same teaching in Matthew 13:31-32 and Mark 4:30-32.

The mustard seed was known as one of the smallest seeds, yet it grows into a large plant where birds can find shelter. In this way Jesus was teaching several truths at once. First, the Kingdom begins small and seemingly insignificant. It began with Jesus Himself, with twelve disciples, with a message preached in a small region, yet through the power of God it would grow to fill the earth. Second, its growth is certain and God given. As 1 Corinthians 3:6 says, I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase. Man casts the seed into the garden, but only God makes it grow. Third, its greatness becomes a place of refuge. The birds lodging in its branches reminds us of the prophecies like Daniel 4:12 and Ezekiel 17:23 where a great tree shelters many, picturing how the Kingdom would expand to include both Jew and Gentile, people from every nation finding rest and salvation in Christ.

Is He building the Kingdom of God on earth by this saying, He is revealing that the Kingdom is already being built on earth, but not as an earthly political kingdom. Many in His day expected the Messiah to establish an immediate earthly government. Yet Jesus explained in Luke 17:20-21, God’s Kingdom doesn’t come with observation, neither will they say, Look, here or Look, there for behold, God’s Kingdom is within you. And in John 18:36 He said, My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.

So the Kingdom was inaugurated through His life, death and resurrection, and it grows spiritually on earth now through the preaching of the gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit in hearts, as believers are added to His church. It is not built by human power or by mere words, but by God Himself working through Christ. Its fullness will be revealed when Jesus returns and His Kingdom is made complete in glory. We are living in the time of its growth from small seed to great tree.

We rejoice that you know Him as Yeshua, which is His name in Hebrew, and we affirm that He is Jesus Christ the Son of God, for as Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ that we enter this Kingdom.

We pray together for you in Jesus name that the Father will give you wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. Father, we thank You for Your Kingdom that began so small and has grown by Your power. We pray that You open our eyes to understand the mysteries of Your Kingdom and that You cause the seed of Your Word to grow deep in our hearts and bear much fruit. Help us to trust not in outward appearance but in Your hidden and mighty work, and to find shelter and rest under Your care. Make us faithful to sow the seed of the gospel and to watch You give the increase, until the day when Your Kingdom comes in its fullness. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We appreciate you asking about this parable and wanting to understand Jesus' meaning more deeply.

The picture He gives is intentionally humble. A mustard seed was one of the smallest seeds people in that culture would plant, yet it grows into something much larger than you would expect from such a tiny beginning, large enough for birds to find shelter in its branches. He is helping His listeners see that God's kingdom does not start with outward show or power as people expected. It begins small, quietly, often unnoticed, in hearts and in small faithful acts, and God causes it to grow far beyond what the beginning would suggest.

He is not building the kingdom simply by saying the words. He is describing what God is already doing through Him and inviting people to recognize it. The kingdom is God's reign breaking into this world now through Jesus, while its fullness is still to come. The parable gives hope that what looks small now is not wasted.

If this has stirred you, it may help to read the mustard seed parable slowly alongside the other short parables around it and ask the Lord in prayer what small place He is growing in your own life.

Father, we thank You for revealing Your kingdom through Jesus. Give our friend clarity and joy as they seek You, and help them to see Your quiet work growing day by day. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

The parable to which you refer is that word of our Lord, It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden, and it grew, and waxed a great tree, and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

Our Saviour spake thus not to describe an earthly empire built by the power of man, but to set forth the nature and growth of His spiritual kingdom. The kingdom of God cometh not with outward show as men build kingdoms, but it beginneth in lowliness and smallness, as a single grain. It is a lowly business altogether, yet to the mustard seed, and to the man with a garden, the sowing is the all important matter. The seed will never grow unless put into the soil.

What is this seed but the living Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This living Word is the finger of God. That simple grain must be made by God, or not at all, He must put life into the Gospel, or it will not have power in the heart. When that Word is cast into the garden of the heart, and quickened by the Holy Spirit in the new birth, without whose divine working none can enter the kingdom of heaven, then it groweth.

So the Lord teaches us three things. First, the small beginning, despised by the world, yet chosen of God. Second, the sure and great growth, for that which is sown in weakness waxes into a great tree, so that what began with one Christ and a few disciples now spreads and gives shelter. Third, the hospitable greatness of it, for the fowls of the air lodge in the branches of it, even as souls from every city find refuge under its shade.

Is He then building the kingdom on earth by this saying alone. By the saying He declares and sows, but the building is of God. We do not enter into the kingdom by working out some deep problem and arriving at its solution, or by fetching something out of ourselves, but by receiving a secret something into us. Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. We receive it as a child receives a gift, taking it from the Word of God just as we see it there, not already full with the thoughts of the world. The man sows, but God giveth the increase.

Therefore take heed that you so hear this parable as to be quickened by it. Pray that the Lord would cast that mustard seed into your own heart, that you may be born again by the Spirit, and receive the kingdom as a little child, trusting wholly in Christ. For there is salvation in no other, and the kingdom is His, to give and to make to grow according to His good pleasure.

May the Lord teach you His statutes, and cause that seed to bring forth abundant fruit in you, to His glory.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have asked well concerning the parable of the mustard seed, and it is right to seek its meaning.

The Lord spoke this parable not to describe an earthly kingdom built by human power, but to give courage to His hearers and to show the power of the gospel. You will remember that before this He had spoken of the sower, where three parts of the seed are lost and only one is saved, and even there much is choked. The disciples might well have feared and said, Who then will be faithful, and how will the word prevail if so many are lost. To remove that fear He gave the parable of the mustard seed, leading them to belief and signifying that in any case the gospel shall be spread abroad.

For though the mustard seed seems small in bulk, yet in power it is the strongest of things. So it is with the gospel and with faith. The preaching began as a small thing, from a few unlearned fishermen and from the cross itself which seemed weakness to the world, yet it extends itself and prevails over the world. As the small seed cast into the garden becomes a great tree, so the word cast into the souls of men grows and shelters many. This is what is meant also when He says that if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible to you. Even the least degree of genuine faith can do great things because its power is from God.

Therefore He is not speaking of building a kingdom on earth as kings build kingdoms with armies and cities. The kingdom of heaven is not of this sort. It is the reign of Christ in the hearts of those who believe, and the life of the age to come, yet it truly grows here on earth as the gospel is preached and received. It begins small, it is hidden like leaven, it requires our obedience and faith, but God gives the increase. We are to learn from this to value the gospel above all things, to cling to it with joy, and to trust that though the beginning seems small, God will make it great.

Pray then for faith, even as small as that seed, and for perseverance to do all that He has commanded, for it is by such faith and obedience that we come to have confidence toward God and to inherit the kingdom prepared for us.
