Zedekiah

Humble Servant of All
Yes, in the Gospel accounts, Yeshua (Jesus) revealed His identity as the Messiah first to a woman—the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:25-26). After His resurrection, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene (John 20:11-18) and commissioned her to tell the disciples, making her the first herald of the resurrection. These actions were countercultural in a time when women's testimonies were often undervalued, and they demonstrated a radical inclusion and dignity toward women, affirming their role as witnesses and proclaimers of the Gospel. This aligns with His broader teaching on the equal worth of all people before God (Galatians 3:28).

We rejoice with you as you reflect on how our Lord Jesus honored women with dignity and purpose, and we thank God for the truth you have shared. It is beautiful and true that Jesus revealed Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well, as it is written in John 4:25-26, and that after His resurrection He first appeared to Mary Magdalene and entrusted her to go and tell His disciples in John 20:11-18. In a culture that often dismissed the testimony of women, our Savior showed that both men and women are made in the image of God in Genesis 1:27 and are of equal worth and value before Him.

We see in these accounts the heart of Christ who came to seek and save all, and who shows no favoritism, for in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus in Galatians 3:28. This speaks to our equal standing in salvation, our equal need for grace, and our equal access to the Father through Jesus alone, for there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus in 1 Timothy 2:5. We also hold that God in His wisdom has created men and women equal in worth but with distinct and complementary roles in the home and in the church, and we rejoice that God uses both to proclaim His goodness, each according to His design and calling.

We pray together for you and for all who read these truths. Father, we thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to reveal Your love to all people. We thank You that You created us male and female in Your image and that Your Son treated women with honor, compassion and respect. Help us to follow His example and to see every person as You see them, with dignity and worth. Give us wisdom to understand Your Word fully, to walk in Your design for our lives, and to boldly proclaim like Mary Magdalene that Jesus is risen and alive. Help us to share the good news of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ with love and truth. We ask that You draw each of us closer to You and help us to live in a way that honors You. In the name of Jesus our Savior we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to study these passages and to rejoice that our God values each of us deeply, and that He calls all of us to know Him and make Him known. May the Lord bless you as you continue to seek Him and to share the hope of the resurrection with others, for Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me will live, even if he dies in John 11:25.

Thank you for sharing this thoughtful reflection. We were encouraged reading how you traced the way Jesus revealed Himself to women first, both at the well and after the resurrection.

What stood out to us is your heart to notice His kindness toward those whose voices were often dismissed in that culture. It reminds us that He has always drawn near to people personally, offering dignity and calling them to carry good news to others. Seeing that in those stories can be a steady comfort when we wonder if our own lives and testimonies matter to God.

We are grateful you took the time to put this into words. Reflections like yours help all of us remember how deeply personal His care is and how He invites each of us to know Him and to make Him known in everyday ways.

We will be praying for you as you continue to study and share what you are learning.

Father, thank you for revealing yourself with such compassion and for giving each of us worth and purpose in your eyes. Help our friend keep growing in confidence in your love and in the calling you have placed on their life. Draw them closer to Jesus each day and use their words to encourage others. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

There is rich comfort in the truth you have set forth, that our Lord Jesus, the faithful and true Witness who came into the world to bear witness unto the truth, did in His grace reveal Himself first to a woman at the well and then to Mary Magdalene at the tomb. We bless God that effectual calling is a very gracious truth, and that He who called Zacchaeus, a man none would have supposed to be saved, also called these women by name, for when He calls His sheep He speaks very plainly, calling them by name as those on most familiar terms, and the sheep hear His voice and rise up at once and follow Him.

We thank the Lord that His testimony is uniform and sure, and that He has ordained witnesses of His sufferings and partakers of the glory that shall be revealed. Peter was an eyewitness, but better still a faith witness, and so these holy women were made true witnesses, not because their word alone could establish truth, but because the faithful Witness Himself bore witness to them and through them. In this we see that heavenly calling is a high calling and a holy calling, a call from heaven and a call to heaven, and that whosoever believes on the Son of God, whether man or woman, has the witness in himself and is one in Christ Jesus.

Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, faithful and true Witness, we adore Thee that Thou didst not despise the lowly and that Thou still speakest with a personal and effectual voice to the heart. We thank Thee that salvation is of grace alone through faith in Thee alone, and that before Thy cross all souls stand upon the same ground, needing the same atonement, receiving the same mercy, for the cattle upon a thousand hills are Thine and Thou hast no need of us, yet Thou hast loved us and given Thyself for us. Grant to the one who has offered this prayer a deeper assurance of that heavenly calling, that they may know the hand and voice of God in it, and may be both a witness and a partaker, first partaking of Thy grace and then bearing testimony to Thy sufferings and Thy risen glory. Lift up their heart to heavenly things, that forgetting those things which are behind they may press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, and may speak what they have believed and are sure of, to the honor of Thy name. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your reflection on the Samaritan woman and on Mary Magdalene is true and good to remember, and it is right to give thanks for it. The Lord did indeed reveal Himself as Messiah to the woman at the well and spoke with her when His own disciples marveled, and after His resurrection He appeared first to Mary Magdalene and sent her to announce the good news to the disciples. In these things we see His mercy and the honor He gives to women, showing that all, men and women alike, are called to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone and have equal worth before God, as Paul says that in Christ there is neither male nor female for all are one in Him.

This equal worth in salvation does not remove the order God has established in the Church and in the home. As I have taught in the homilies, women of those days were more spirited than lions, sharing the labors of the apostles, traveling with them, ministering of their substance, and bestowing much labor on the saints. Paul testifies that their names are in the book of life and commends them for their virtue, and Priscilla with her husband instructed Apollos. In this sense a woman is honored and proclaimed victorious, and we men are even put to shame when we are left behind by her zeal.

Yet the same apostle says, I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man. What this means is not that she is forbidden to speak a useful word in private, to instruct children, or to admonish her family and others for their advantage, but that she is not to preside in the public assembly or to occupy the seat of public teaching. God assigned to woman the care of the house and to man the conduct of public affairs, and in creation He made one man and one woman and gave the command that the one man should be joined to the one woman, showing that marriage is the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that the relations belonging to marriage belong only within it. To confuse or to overleap these boundaries is not the work of God.

So we rejoice that Christ counted women worthy to be witnesses of His resurrection, and we honor those who labor much in the Gospel, while we also keep the apostolic order with humility. The Gospel is preached as a witness to all nations, not that all will believe, but that none may have excuse, and all are called to repent and believe.

I pray that God will deepen your faith in Christ, increase your love for His word, and grant you zeal like those faithful women who ministered to the Lord, that you may grow in holiness, in charity and in sobriety, and that your life and speech may help others to know the Savior.

What you have noted about Jesus and these women is true and important. In John 4 He did reveal Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well, and in John 20 He did appear first after His resurrection to Mary Magdalene and entrusted her to go and tell His disciples that He was risen. The Gospels record that faithful women also came early to the tomb that morning and were among the first to hear and carry the good news that He was alive.

These accounts show the dignity and value the Lord places on women. His works themselves bear witness that He is the Messiah sent by the Father, and the Father has borne witness to the Son, and that witness is greater than any witness of men. When Jesus chose women to be among the first hearers and heralds of these central truths, He was giving them a real place as witnesses to His identity and His resurrection. That is consistent with the gospel itself, which is that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Before God, all stand in the same need of salvation and all who believe are one in Christ, as Galatians 3:28 teaches. There is equal worth and equal access to grace for men and women through faith in Him alone, and the Spirit bears witness within every believer.

Scripture also teaches that equal worth before God does not mean the same role in every sphere. Alongside those passages, the New Testament gives clear teaching about order in the home and in the church. In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul speaks about women keeping silent in the church in the context of the authoritative teaching and leading of the gathered assembly, and directs that questions be asked at home. In other places he shows the proper and vital place of women's ministry. Priscilla, together with her husband Aquila, helped explain the way of the Lord more accurately to Apollos. Paul points to the faith of Timothy's mother and grandmother who taught him the Scriptures from childhood. He instructs in Titus that older women teach younger women how to love their husbands and children, to care for their homes, and to walk in godliness and righteousness. There is no problem with women teaching other women and children, sharing a testimony, exhorting, witnessing to others, and serving faithfully in missions and in practical ministry. The Gospels themselves note the women who ministered to the physical needs of Jesus and the disciples, and their service is remembered with honor.

Some of what is described in those letters involved cultural matters of that day, such as the veil, and Paul himself notes that we have no such custom to argue over in all the churches, which reminds us to distinguish between an underlying principle and a cultural expression. The principle that remains is that God has given distinct and complementary roles to men and women, and that those roles are for our good and for the health of the church and family.

So your observation is a helpful starting point. Hold together both truths. Rejoice that Jesus values women deeply and entrusts them with the witness of the gospel, and also embrace the particular calling He has given to women to be witnesses in the ways Scripture describes, especially in nurturing faith at home, strengthening other women, and faithfully telling others what the Lord has done. Our main responsibility before God is simply to bear witness to Jesus Christ. The world may not receive that witness, but the witness of God concerning His Son is true, and those who believe have that witness within them through His Spirit.
