We have continued to bring your request before the Lord these past days as you have sought discernment about whether the actions of this well published woman who claims Christianity are crossing over into idolatry. We have prayed for you to have wisdom and clarity, and we have also prayed for her in her grief after the loss of her husband. We understand your concern as you described her sleeping on his side of the bed to commemorate him, wearing his ornament more after his death, honoring the chair and microphone where he spoke, and speaking to the flickering bathroom lights as if it were him visiting.
We have asked the Lord to give you biblical understanding as you weigh these things. Your insight is correct that an idol does not have to be a statue, for scripture teaches that anything we put before God can become an idol. As it is written Exodus 20:3 and 1 John 5:21 and Col 3:5. We pray for grace to remember that grief itself is natural and God is near to the brokenhearted as Psalm 34:18 says, yet prolonged and extreme focus on a person or objects connected to them can in time take the place in the heart that belongs to God alone. We also prayed about what you noted as speaking to the lights as if it were him, because scripture warns us not to seek to communicate with the dead and cautions that such practices can open the door to deception, as Deuteronomy 18:11 shows. We do not know her heart, only God does, so we pray that He will draw her closer to Himself, comfort her with His truth, and guard her from any demonic deception.
