There are so many of us that struggle with financial concerns that I realized it would be helpful if we shared ideas for stretching our funds. I did this on another message board and it has changed my life in many ways. I am going to share the things I have learned and done to save money and I hope you will add to this any tips even if you think they are small. Every penny counts because the widow's mite was still important to God.

Angel Food Ministry:

This is a way to get food at a discount cost. My friends are most excited about the prepared meals that are frozen. The Senior meals are individual dinners that cost $2.50 each. So, a box of 10 meals is $25. This program is so big that 450 units of food were distributed this last weekend. You can read more about Angel Food Here:

Freecycle:

This is a way to give away or recieve items absolutely FREE. I use Freecycle to give away household items I can not use and get things I need like clothing for our daughter. Go to www.freecycle.org and find a chapter that is local to you. Join the chapter and you will start getting emails of what is available in your location. When you want to offer something you will then send in an email. People will contact you through email and you will decide who you would like to give the item to.

"Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community."

Redbox: A service to rent DVDs for $1. http://www.redbox.com/home.aspx The Redboxes in our location are in Walmarts and they work like vending machines. They will also send you coupon codes through email for free movies from time to time. We have had nothing but good experiences with this.

Community Supported Agriculture: Find your local chapter here: http://www.localharvest.org/csa/

A CSA, (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a farm and to receive a weekly basket of produce. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "shareholders," or "subscribers") of the CSA. Most CSA farmers prefer that members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or monthly payments. Some CSAs also require that members work a small number of hours on the farm during the growing season.

I do not have this in my area but have online friends who enjoy this service.

Almost Starbucks Frappuccino

3 ounces hot espresso*

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 1/2 cups milk (low-fat is okay)

1 tablespoon dry pectin** (Starbucks' secret ingredient)

1 cup ice

whipped cream (optional)

Stir the sugar into the hot espresso. Allow to cool. Stir the milk and pectin into the espresso mixture until dissolved. Fill a glass with ice and pour the mixture over, or pour the ingredients plus ice into the blender and process on "frappe" for 30 to 45 seconds. Pour into glasses and top with whipped cream. Yield: four 6-ounce servings.

*If you do not have an espresso maker, brew double-strength coffee by doubling the amount of grinds. Starbucks uses Italian Roast.

**Look for pectin (used in home canning to thicken jams and jellies) in the grocery store's baking aisle.
