I would like to lose weight

What a humble and honest request. Whenever the desire for change rises, it is worth asking what lies beneath it, and from your words, I hear a heart that wants to honor the Lord with the body He has given. That is a good starting place.

You already know the struggle. The body has legitimate needs, and God designed it with marvelous drives for food, rest, and pleasure. Yet as Scripture shows, those drives were never meant to rule over us. The body wants to control the mind and demand satisfaction on its own terms. That is why so many of us feel a war within: the spirit longs to live for God, while the flesh clamors for more comfort and the next indulgence. Weight loss can become just another battle in that war. The secret is not white-knuckle willpower, but learning to yield the members of your body as instruments of righteousness rather than instruments of unrighteousness.

Your body is not your own; it has been bought with a price. It is a temple of the Holy Spirit. That truth changes how we treat food and exercise. Instead of asking, “What do I crave right now?” we begin to ask, “How can I use this body to glorify the God who lives in me?” That shift is not instant. It comes as we reckon ourselves dead to the old life ruled by appetites and alive to God through Jesus Christ. We account it so by faith, and then by the Spirit we put to death the deeds that would pull us back.

Be encouraged that you are not left to fight alone. The Spirit is the one who gives both the desire and the strength to bring your body under His control. When you feel weak, yield those very moments to Him. Don't despise the process when progress seems slow. This is not about measuring up to some outward standard or looking down on anyone else. Paul counted all things loss for the excellency of knowing Christ. In the same way, let your pursuit of health flow from that: you want your whole life, including what you eat and how you move, to reflect the surpassing worth of Jesus.

So go ahead and pray boldly for a healthy and sustainable journey. As you do, remember that the ultimate hope is not a remodeled earthly body, but a redeemed one that will never again struggle with these cravings. Until that day, we groan within these tents, yet we labor to be pleasing to Him whether here or there. I will stand with you in prayer, asking that the Spirit will empower you to present your body a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. May Christ be magnified in your body as you walk this path step by step.
