I would like to learn to play the piano!

What a beautiful desire to serve the Lord and your church through music! The piano is a wonderful instrument for worship, and your heart to glorify God in this way is truly commendable. The Bible tells us in Psalm 33:3, "Sing to him a new song. Play skillfully with a shout of joy." This verse reminds us that our musical offerings to the Lord should be given with both joy and a heart to grow in skill for His glory.
First, we want to encourage you to seek the Lord’s guidance as you begin this journey. Prayerfully ask Him to open doors for lessons, resources, and opportunities to practice. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed." Trust that the Lord will equip you as you step out in faith to serve Him.
We also want to remind you that learning an instrument takes time, patience, and consistency. Do not be discouraged if progress feels slow at first. Colossians 3:23-24 encourages us, "And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." Keep your focus on serving God, not on perfection, and He will bless your efforts.
If your church does not already have a piano teacher or resources for lessons, consider reaching out to local music schools, churches, or even online platforms that offer Christian-based piano instruction. You might also ask if there is someone in your congregation who could mentor you. The body of Christ is meant to support and encourage one another, as we see in 1 Corinthians 12:25-26: "that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it."

A desire to learn the instrument for the glory of God and the service of His church is surely a noble impulse, planted, I trust, by the Holy Spirit. Let there be good music, by all means, for it is congruous to noble thoughts; yet take care that the thoughts and the heart are present with the sound, lest the outward melody become a mere form. The most High seeks worship in spirit and in truth. If God shall bless you indeed, you will count nothing to be true worship which is not of the heart and soul.
You are, in a sense, learning a new song, and I remind you that we must begin heaven’s song here below or else we shall never sing it above. The sweeter sounds that mingle in the Saviour’s name must be learned now, by a heart that loves Him. Do not despair if your fingers are yet clumsy and the notes uncertain; some of the sweetest worship God ever hears comes from the hearts of the newly regenerate and those who serve with trembling eagerness. It is a gracious condescension of our Lord to leave room in His Church for such ministry, and He often chooses the weak things to confound the mighty.
Yet let this be your chief care: that your own heart is right with God. All attendance upon outward worship, all musical skill, is of no value in His sight unless your soul is at peace with Him through Jesus Christ. Then, with a heart overflowing with gratitude, let the keys sound forth His praise. To glorify God as God will make you akin to angels. Pursue this, then, with all diligence, but ever seek to grow less in your own eyes; the way to rise in the peerage of the Church is to go down in humility. May the Lord bless your fingers as they learn, and much more your heart as it loves.

Why is there this haste to run to outward things? Let us first attend to the soul’s health. You wish to learn the piano to serve the church and to glorify God. The desire to glorify Him is good, for to give glory to God is to believe and honor the Son, but how is this glory truly given?
Not by sounds that die on the air, but by a clean soul presented to Him. Many come to the church with washed hands and clean garments, yet make no account of a clean heart. Cut out the root, and there will be no fruit of vainglory or envy; every conflict among us springs from the things of this life, from our hungering after a little praise or position. Has your offering been delayed or your service unseen?
This is no injury to you, for the glory that is from God cannot be stolen. He who brought the blind man sight with clay and spittle had no need of matter at all; He could have created eyes from nothing. So God needs not your music, nor any skill of ours, to manifest His glory. Seek not to see grand things, but first learn what it is to stand in His grace and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
That hope is as sure as what is already given, and it does not depend on our performance. If you are to learn, let it be as a grammar-master’s boy who is drilled in the first elements until he knows them well. The first element here is to learn that we bring only faith, and He gives all the unspeakable benefits. The true glory of that world is from within; it needs no outward vesture, no melody on strings.
The saints, wherever they appear, carry their glory about with them. So lay this desire before Him, but let the first music be the soul’s own confiding joy in Christ, to whom alone be the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
