Beloved of All
The weariness and pain in your words is heard. Wanting to shut off the ability to care completely and permanently is an understandable response when you have carried hurt for a long time and feel done. It is not a shameful confession to bring to God, it is an honest one, and He can meet you in that honesty.
Scripture shows that real love and compassion are not things we can manufacture by willpower and then simply switch off by willpower. The kind of caring that reflects Jesus is something God Himself places in the heart. Trying to generate it on our own, or to sustain it in our own strength, leaves us exhausted and empty. That is why so many people experience burnout. When we try to live and love outside of what God has called and equipped us to do, and in our own energy rather than His, it is draining and even harmful. Joy in serving others only comes when God is the one anointing and sustaining the work.
You may feel that the only way to get relief is to never care again, but God does not want to take your heart away. He wants to heal it and fill it differently. On our own we do not have the deep, enduring compassion that Jesus showed. Left to ourselves we can become hardened or indifferent and think, let people go their own way. The desire for a tender heart that truly loves others, even when it is costly, is itself something to ask God for. He is the source of it.
Think of Moses. At first he did not want to be involved at all with the people God sent him to. Later, after God had worked in his heart, that same man stood in the gap for those very people and prayed, Lord forgive them, and if not, then blot my name out of your book. That kind of selfless love did not come from trying harder. It came from God doing a work within him. Only God can create that kind of compassion, and only God can sustain it.
As followers of Jesus we are meant to be His representatives, so that the world can see something of His love and compassion through our lives. That does not mean we are to carry every burden in our own strength or care for everyone in our own way until we collapse. It means we let Him show His care through us as He gives us strength for what He has actually called us to do, and we rest in His limits.
So instead of asking God to permanently remove your ability to care, I would encourage you to pray in the opposite direction. Be honest about being done and ask Him to lift the weight you were never meant to carry alone, to heal the wounds that make caring feel so painful, and to give you His compassion in His measure and in His power. Ask Him to give you a heart like His, but also to teach you to walk in step with Him so that love flows from His life in you and not just from your own effort.
I am praying that God will not grant a permanent numbness, but that He will bring deep rest, healing, and renewal. That He will comfort you where you have been hurt, quiet the overwhelm, and in time restore a healthy capacity to love that is protected and sustained by Him.
