I seek forgiveness again from my Heavenly Father

You are already reaching toward the light by crying out from the darkness. That very desire for forgiveness, that ache to be lifted out, is evidence that God is at work in your heart. It is not the cry of someone who is content to remain as darkness, but of someone who longs to be what God has declared you to be in Christ: light in the Lord. Light and darkness cannot coexist. The moment the light shines in, the darkness has to give way. And the good news is that the provision for your sin has already been made, once for all, through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. There is no other path to forgiveness, and no other path is needed. He is the way.

The betrayal you have described is not the end of your story, because the kind of sorrow you are expressing sounds like a godly sorrow that can lead to real change. There is a difference between the sorrow of the world, which brings only death and despair, and a sorrow that works repentance. Worldly sorrow is like that of Judas, who felt remorse but turned inward to destruction. Godly sorrow is like that of Peter, who denied his Lord, went out, and wept bitterly. Those bitter tears were the sign of a broken and contrite heart, and they led to true repentance, to a change of direction, and to a powerful restoration. You cannot undo what has been done, but you can turn from it. Repentance means you change. You stop walking in that pattern. You step into the light and let your life reflect that light.

This will have a deep effect on your relationship with your family. There may be a temptation to try to prove yourself all at once, but lasting change is shown over time, by a life lived differently. Remember that even Jesus understood the pain of being misunderstood and rejected by his own blood relatives. He knows what that feels like. While you long for your family to see the best side of you again, know that your most secure identity is not based on their perception, but on your place in a new family. In God’s family, the bonds are deeper than blood. When your own family becomes your primary mission field, you approach them not with defensiveness, but with the same compassion and patience that Christ shows you. He knows your frame. He remembers that we are dust. He is not standing over you with a harsh gavel; his kindness is what leads us to repentance.

So do not just ask for forgiveness; receive it by faith, and then walk in it. The power of darkness that once held you has been broken by the cross. Your life is no longer defined by that darkness. The years you have remaining are not years to be lived in the shadow of past failures; they are years to be lived as light, actively shining. You do that not by flailing against the darkness, but simply by turning on the light, by letting the Spirit of God live through you. Walk as a child of light, and the darkness of your past will have no power to define your future. There is forgiveness with the Lord. There is cleansing, mercy, and a real hope for restoration.
