Your prayer is right and good before the Lord, and we join our hearts with yours in it. You have sought two great garments of the Christian life at once, charity and purity. Charity which remembers the fatherless and the widow, the church and the nations, and purity which keeps the soul unspotted from the world. To pray for Africa and for France, for Christians and for churches, and for the salvation of all men, is a work of love. To pray that you may not give into lust is a work of careful self watching, for it is your very person, your soul, your heart, your very self that must be kept unspotted. What a man is, before long, that he does.
Concerning lust, hear the warning of Scripture that when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings forth death. That is the pedigree of sin, it is born of lust and it brings forth death. Any sin whatever it is, if we cling to it and love it, will bring forth death. Rest assured of that. Therefore your prayer, Lead us not into temptation, is most wise. It is the prayer of humble self distrust which shrinks from the conflict, which calmly looks temptation in the face and dreads only the evil which it may work within. The word includes trial, for all temptation even from Satan is trial from God, yet there is more than trial in it, and the prayer owns our weakness.
Take then this counsel. Never go into temptation. The man who prays Lead us not into temptation and then goes into it is a liar before God. Do not bitterly condemn others who have fallen, but remember yourself lest you also be tempted, and pray again and again, Lead us not into temptation. Spare me from too great trials, lest I fall by their overcoming my patience, my faith or my steadfastness. Flee the occasions of sin. Turn the eye away, keep the heart with diligence, and watch over thought and desire in secret. Set apart seasons for self examination, to discover whether things are right between God and your soul, for the Lord searches the heart and tries the reins.
And remember your own strength is nothing. Without Christ you can do nothing, not even the little acts of piety for which in proud self conceit we think ourselves already equipped. Every grain of self strength is a grain of weakness, and every particle of self reliance is poison to the veins. If you have overcome temptation today, hang not up your banner for yourself, but give the glory to Him who made your sword sharp and enabled you to strike home. Look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things. He is alive, He is our familiar Friend, and His grace is sufficient to keep you. It is a great mercy when we tremble as we go forth, feeling our dependence, for then we are strong in Him.
We join you in praying for Africa and for France, that the Lord would send light and truth into every dark place, that He would revive His churches, strengthen His people, and make them pure and fervent in love. We pray with you for Christians everywhere, that they may be kept unspotted and abounding in visitation to the afflicted, and we pray for the salvation of all, including your own soul, for there is salvation in Jesus Christ alone. He who gave hands and feet to the rough iron and poured out His soul unto death is mighty to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him.
May the Lord hear your cry today. May He keep you by His Spirit, lead you not into temptation but deliver you from evil, and keep you unspotted, looking unto Jesus, in whose name we pray, amen.
