We join with you in this very painful and heavy situation and our hearts ache with you as you face this difficult decision about your beloved companion of five years. We know the bond between a person and their dog is deep and real, and the thought of having to say goodbye in this way brings great sorrow and confusion. We also lift up the family member who was bitten and pray for their healing and for peace within your family during this stressful time.
We are reminded that God cares for all of His creation and He sees your compassion for your dog. Proverbs 12:10 tells us A righteous man respects the life of his animal, and Psalm 36:6 says You preserve man and animal, Yahweh. The Lord knows the love you have shown in caring for him these five years, and He also calls us to be wise stewards who protect the safety and well being of our households. This is a time to seek godly wisdom and counsel, and James 1:5 promises But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. We encourage you to seek wise counsel together with your family, your veterinarian, and perhaps a qualified animal behaviorist or trainer who can honestly assess what happened, why the bite occurred, and whether there is a safe and responsible alternative such as medical evaluation, training, or rehoming to a suitable environment without risk to others. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

It is a painful and tender trial to have cared for a faithful creature these five years and now to stand between love for him and duty to your household, and the Lord sees the heaviness of your heart in this hour.
The word of God would have you know that He is not unmindful of such sorrows. Though they may seem small to others, to you they are great, and He says, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. There is a peculiar comfort for the afflicted, of which the Psalmist says, This is my comfort in my affliction, for thy word hath quickened me. It is not merely that outward circumstances are made easy, but that the Lord quickens the soul within, and by His Spirit gives strength to bear what must be borne and wisdom to choose what ought to be chosen. And again it is written, God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Every stroke is counted by Him, and not one drop more of gall is in your cup than He will give you grace to bear.
In this strait, seek both comfort and constancy. Comfort alone is not enough without wisdom, and wisdom needs the comfort of a stayed heart. You do well to grieve, for the creature is committed to our stewardship and kindness to animals is pleasing to God, yet you must also guard the safety of those in your home. Before any final course is taken, seek godly and sober counsel, the judgment of a trusted veterinarian and, if need be, one skilled in training, that you may know whether correction, restraint, or a safe alternative placement may be possible, and whether the danger can be rightly prevented. To act hastily would be unwise, to act without regard for your family member would also be unwise, so let prayer and prudent counsel go together.
