You have no hope but Jesus Christ; that is a blessed confession, for all other hope is vain. When pain and crisis press upon you, and you are hemmed in on every side, it is a mercy to be driven to the mercy seat, where the Lord waits to hear the cry of the broken in heart. The mercy seat is a well of refreshment indeed, and when the Spirit draws you there, every fear must vanish, for God is there already, loving that place better than you do.
He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, and His tender compassions fail not. At such a time, when your strength is dried up and you can do nothing, the mercy of God comes to your aid with a voice of power: “Deliver him!” He does not merely warn, but rescues. And this deliverance is not of your own achieving; it is of free grace alone, lest any should boast. The clock of mercy struck in Heaven the hour ordained, for a ransom has been found, Christ Jesus. Look to Him, and though pain racks the body, know that He often uses such chiselling to carve out deeper capacity for His grace. Pain can be a stern schoolmaster, yet it wraps up great mercy within it, driving us from self-confidence to the omnipotent arm.
They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. To those who have no might, He increases strength. When you feel there remains no strength in you, then fling yourself upon the Divine strength and rejoice, for God Himself has said, “I will strengthen them.” His strength is wisely balanced and infused at the very point of need. As your days, so shall your strength be, strength equal to the trial, to endure, to press on, and to overcome. Yet take care that your hope in His mercy be not a false one. A sound hope knows it is mercy alone it needs; it has been clean divorced from all confidence in self. If mercy comes to you, it will make you a new creature, turning your face toward holiness, giving new loves and new hates. Come, therefore, with an honest heart, pleading nothing but the blood of the Lamb.
The Lord’s people, when they are brought forth, are not left feeble among their tribes. He makes their deliverance effectual, giving health and strength for the journey. Even when weakness lingers after the pain, He shall restore thee by slow degrees, for restoration is often a long process, but it is sure. He who has begun a good work will complete it.
I have not forgotten your cry. I join my prayers with yours, that the Heavenly Father would have mercy upon you, give you wisdom, strength, and rule you utterly, thoughts, words, actions, decisions, prayers, and all. He reads the heart; He knows the sighs that cannot be uttered. He delights in mercy, and as He lives, He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that they turn and live. Trust in Him, wait upon Him, and you shall yet prove His delivering hand. In the name of Jesus Christ, all grace shall abound. Amen.
