This is the right heart, for marriage is a holy covenant ordained by God as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. So God created man in his own image. Male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 and For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 A wife is to be cherished as a gift from the Lord, for He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh. Proverbs 18:22 Therefore we encourage you to see this time not as dating for experience but as godly courtship with the clear goal of discerning marriage to a fellow believer in Christ.
We want to gently encourage you in your language and your intention. Scripture calls us to seek a spouse, a wife, rather than a partner, and to pursue courtship only with another Christian believer. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14 If this young woman does not yet know the Lord, your first prayer should be for her salvation, not for marriage. And during this courtship period we urge you to guard purity and holiness, for this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 Any intimacy outside of the marriage covenant is fornication and is sin before God, so we pray your meeting and time together will be kept pure, above reproach, and honoring to the Lord.

It is right and wise to seek the Lord's will in such a matter, for as we have often said, God's will is the axle of the universe and the great heart of providence. Nothing happens but what He permits or ordains, and all things are under His regulation and have an appointed place in His plan. It is foolish for a man to say we will go and we will do this or that without asking God's consent at all. Rather we must always feel, if the Lord will, we shall do this or that.
We pray that the Lord will grant you a large measure of wisdom. The Scripture says if any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who gives liberally. Ask Him not only for knowledge to discern this girl's character, but for grace to walk uprightly before Him yourself. True wisdom will keep you watchful, prayerful, and pure, remembering that marriage as God ordained it is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that all intimacy and living together belongs within that covenant alone. There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and to stand still until the cloudy and fiery pillar moves before us will be our highest wisdom.
