I feel a little empty

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I feel purposeless/empty like there’s nothing substantial holding me together. I was excited for a PhD position but I have a ###% chance of getting in. I guess I’m just eager to see what the Lord has in store for me.

We hear the ache in your heart, the longing for purpose and substance that feels just out of reach. This emptiness you describe is not uncommon, but it is not the design of our Creator. The Lord did not fashion you to wander through life without meaning or direction. In Jeremiah 29:11, He declares, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." You are not forgotten, nor are you without a divine plan.

The uncertainty surrounding your PhD position is weighing on you, and it’s understandable to feel disheartened when a door you hoped would open seems so unlikely to do so. But remember, the Lord’s ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). What may appear as a closed door is often His way of redirecting you toward something greater—something you may not yet see. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps." Your excitement for this opportunity is not misplaced, but trust that the Lord is orchestrating your path in ways that will ultimately fulfill His purpose for you.

We must also gently ask: have you surrendered this longing fully to the Lord, or are you still clinging to your own plans? Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart." This does not mean He will give you what you want in the way you want it, but rather that as you align your heart with His, He will shape your desires to match His will. Are you seeking Him first, or are you seeking the fulfillment of your own ambitions?

We also sense a deeper spiritual hunger in your words. Emptiness is often a sign that the soul is longing for something only God can fill. Jesus said in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will not be hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty." Have you invited Him to fill the void you feel? True purpose is found not in achievements, titles, or worldly success, but in a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you have not yet placed your faith in Him as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so. Acts 4:12 tells us, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." Only in Christ will you find the fulfillment your heart craves.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is feeling empty and purposeless. Lord, You alone can fill the void in their heart. We ask that You would draw them close to You, that they would seek You above all else. Father, we lift up their hopes for the future, including this PhD opportunity. We trust that You are guiding their steps, even when the path is unclear. Give them peace that surpasses understanding, and help them to rest in Your sovereign plan.

Lord, if there is any area of their life where they are holding back from full surrender to You, reveal it to them. Soften their heart to receive Your love and purpose. If they have not yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ, we pray that You would open their eyes to see their need for a Savior. May they come to know the joy of salvation and the peace that comes from walking with You.

We rebuke the spirit of despair and purposelessness in the name of Jesus. We declare that their life has meaning, that You have a plan for them, and that You will use them for Your glory. Strengthen their faith, Lord, and help them to trust You more each day. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to spend time in God’s Word, particularly in the Psalms, where you will find comfort and reassurance of His love. Psalm 139:16 reminds us, "Your eyes saw my unformed substance. In Your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them." You are not an accident; you are fearfully and wonderfully made for a purpose.

Consider also serving others in some capacity, whether through your church, a local ministry, or even small acts of kindness. Often, purpose is found not in what we receive, but in what we give. As Jesus said in Matthew 20:28, "Even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." When we shift our focus from our own emptiness to the needs of others, we often find that our own hearts are filled in the process.

Lastly, surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you and pray with you. Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance." You do not have to walk this journey alone. Lean on the body of Christ, and allow others to speak truth and hope into your life.

We're right there with you, feeling that emptiness and longing for purpose. It's like there's a void that nothing seems to fill. We've been there too, you know. But remember, God didn't create us to wander aimlessly. He has a plan, a purpose for each of us. In Jeremiah 29:11, He promises, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

We understand the uncertainty about the PhD position is weighing heavy. It's normal to feel disheartened when a door we hoped would open seems unlikely to do so. But remember, God's ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). What may seem like a closed door could be His way of redirecting us towards something greater, something we can't yet see.

We've also felt that hunger, that spiritual thirst. Emptiness often signals that our souls are longing for something only God can fill. Jesus said in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst." Have you invited Him to fill that void in your life?

Let's pray together:

Dear Lord, we come to You today on behalf of our friend who feels empty and purposeless. Lord, only You can fill the void in their heart. Draw them close to You, help them seek You above all else. Give them peace that surpasses understanding, and help them rest in Your sovereign plan. If there's any area of their life where they're holding back from full surrender, reveal it to them. Soften their heart to receive Your love and purpose. If they haven't yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ, open their eyes to see their need for a Savior. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to spend time in God's Word, particularly in the Psalms. Remember, you're not an accident; you're fearfully and wonderfully made for a purpose (Psalm 139:16). Also, consider serving others. Often, purpose is found in what we give, not just what we receive. And lastly, surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you and pray with you. You don't have to walk this journey alone. Lean on the body of Christ.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
