I don't want to be a dad

We hear your honest confession that you do not want to be a dad and that you feel it is not your position and it is too much for you, and we want to lift you up before the Lord together while also speaking the truth in love.

We understand that feelings of fear and being overwhelmed are real, especially when faced with the great responsibility of fatherhood. Yet we must gently rebuke the idea that a child is a burden to be rejected or that fatherhood can be cast aside when it feels difficult. The Word tells us that children are a gift from God, not an accident or an interruption. Psalm 127:3 says, Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward. If God has allowed life to be conceived or entrusted a child to your care, He has placed you in that position as the father, and with that position comes a holy calling to provide, protect, and lead.

If this feeling comes because a child has been conceived outside of marriage, we must lovingly address that as well. God designed sexual intimacy to be within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, and any sex outside of that is fornication. Hebrews 13:4 says, Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. If this is your situation, we encourage you to repent and to seek to honor God going forward, pursuing purity and considering marriage as God intends if you are in a courtship with a believing woman, rather than simply living as boyfriend and girlfriend or abandoning the mother and child. A godly man does not forsake his responsibility. 1 Timothy 5:8 warns, But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.

We also hear you say it is too much for you, and in your own strength it may be. But God does not call us to walk in our own strength. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. And 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. The Lord will equip you for what He has called you to do if you lean on Him. Fatherhood is not meant to be carried alone, but with God and with the support of a local church family and godly counsel.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find salvation and strength. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet put your trust in Jesus, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for Romans 10:9 promises you will be saved. He can forgive our past, including sexual sin and fear, and give us a new heart to walk in obedience.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this man who feels overwhelmed and unwilling to be a father. Lord, we ask You to forgive where there has been sin and to wash him clean by the blood of Jesus. Replace his fear with Your peace and his reluctance with Your love for this child. Show him that You are his strength and that Your grace is sufficient for this calling. Give him a heart of courage, responsibility, and selfless love, to provide and to lead as You have designed fathers to do. If this child is yet unborn, protect that precious life, for You knit each of us together in the womb. Lead him to godly mentors and a Bible believing church where he can be discipled and supported. Help him to seek marriage as You ordain it if he is to be joined to the mother of his child, and to pursue holiness in all relationships. We pray he would know Jesus as his Savior and find his identity and strength in Him. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to seek pastoral counsel right away, to be honest with the mother of the child and with trusted godly men in your life, and to commit this decision to prayer daily. God is able to make you the father this child needs as you walk with Him.

We hear how heavy this feels for you right now, and how honest you are being to say it out loud, that fatherhood feels like too much and not where you are meant to be. Feeling overwhelmed like that can be lonely, and it makes sense you would want space to sort through it.

When anxiety rises, it often touches everything at once, our thoughts, our feelings, and even our bodies, and what is in front of us can start to feel bigger than we can carry. That does not mean you are failing, it just means you are under a lot of pressure and need steady support while you seek clarity.

We are praying for you to have wisdom and peace as you take next steps. One thing that often helps is not carrying these thoughts alone. Would you consider talking this week with one trusted person, a pastor, counselor, or mature friend who knows you, and sharing openly what feels most overwhelming about this role? Bringing those specific concerns to God honestly in prayer, and talking them through with someone wise, can help you see what is yours to carry and where you need support or guidance.

Father, we lift our brother to You and ask for Your calm and clear direction over him. Give him rest where he is weary, wisdom for each decision in front of him, and trusted people around him to walk with him. Lead him in Your will and remind him he is not alone. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest words have been heard, and I thank you for speaking plainly about the burden you feel. To say it is too much for you and that you fear you cannot bear the office of a father is a confession many a man has made in his heart, though few have uttered it aloud.

Hear first what the Lord says to such fear. The Scripture is full of this plant that grows plentifully in God's garden, Fear not. Fear not, for I am with thee. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee, saith the Lord. It is not merely a preacher who says this, but Jesus Himself who whispers to His poor servant fallen as dead at His feet, Fear not.

You say it is not your position and it is too much for you. Let us labor to get rid, as much as possible, of fear, for fear is weakening and fear dishonors God. Dost thou think that the arm which piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth shall ever be palsied when it is stretched out to help thee. The prophet asks, why shouldst thou fear when God says, I will help thee. There must be trust in promised strength, and then fear must be chased away.

And concerning fatherhood, hear what is written, Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him. The fatherhood of God is not a light notion, and earthly fatherhood is meant to reflect something of His own pity and care. It is a solemn responsibility, and Scripture will not allow us to treat it lightly. We have preached both the glorious doctrines of grace and the solemn truth of man's responsibility, for both are true. We are called to answer for the place in which Providence has set us. If God in His providence has entrusted or shall entrust to you the life of a child, that trust is not to be refused or cast away, be the child who or what he may. The child cannot lose his need of a father, nor can the father rightly cast off his fatherhood.

To feel that it is too much for you is in one sense true of every good work to which God calls us. Apart from Him it is too much. But His promise is not that you shall have strength in yourself, but that He will help you. Perfect love casteth out fear, for fear hath torment, and when the heart is renewed by forgiveness through the precious blood of Christ, the Lord puts His fear within us and gives a new heart and a new spirit. Then what was dread becomes holy reverence and loving duty.

Where shall we look to be delivered from this fear. Look unto Jesus. In proportion as your faith gets stronger, your fear will vanish. Believe firmly in your Lord, that He who has redeemed you is able also to sustain you in every duty to which He calls you.

Therefore I would urge you not to seek escape from the position, but grace to fill it faithfully. Seek the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ alone, for there is salvation in no other, and ask Him for a new heart to love what He loves. Seek counsel of godly men in your own church, open your case to a faithful pastor, and let the people of God bear this burden with you and help you to walk in the way of holiness and duty. If this burden concerns a life already conceived or a vow of marriage and family, remember that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that children are to be received and nurtured within that holy bond, not forsaken.

We will pray for you, not that God would bless a path of forsaking responsibility, but that He would bless you with courage, with holy fear, with tenderness of conscience, and with strength sufficient for the day. May He deliver you from the fear of man and from anxious fear, and write mercy upon your heart, that you may look into your Saviour's breast and find there all you need to stand and to serve where He has placed you.

Cast this fear upon Him, trust His promise, I will help thee, and go forward in His strength.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty in bringing this fear before God is itself a step toward Him, and He hears you even in this heaviness and sense that the burden is too great.

It is common for a man to feel shaken when he faces the calling of fatherhood, to feel that it is not his place or that he lacks what is needed. Scripture does not teach that such fear means you are disqualified. Rather it teaches that when we are rooted deeply in the fear of God and cleave to Him, what feels intolerable can be borne with His strength. A tree with deep roots is not torn up by a strong wind, while one set lightly on the surface falls with a small gust. So it is with us when we fix our hearts on God and ask for His help.

Fatherhood, where God has entrusted a child to you, is not a position you assign to yourself but one He entrusts to you for the good of that child and for your own shaping in love and responsibility. To turn away from it does not lighten the burden but adds a heavier one to your soul and to others. The path of faith is to remain, to take up what God has placed before you, and to trust that He will supply what you lack as you walk in obedience.

God does not promise that you will feel sufficient in yourself. He promises that His grace is sufficient and that He will equip those He calls. He formed that life, He knows your weakness, and He is able to make you steadfast, gentle, and faithful as you depend on Him daily.

I will pray for you, that God will calm your fear with a greater fear and love for Him, that He will give you courage to stand in the place of responsibility, wisdom to seek counsel, and provision for every need. Ask Him to teach you to love as He loves, to be steadfast, and to grow into this calling one faithful step at a time.

Turn to Him in prayer, bring these anxieties to Him plainly, and do not walk alone. Seek out a faithful pastor or mature believers in your church, tell them of this struggle, and let them walk with you, instruct you, and hold you accountable. If this child is expected outside of marriage, seek godly counsel about how to honor God now through purity, responsibility, and care for both mother and child according to His design for marriage and family.

You are not left without help. Draw near to Christ, who gave Himself for us and nourishes us with His own life, and ask Him to make you rooted and firm. He is able to bear you up and to make you a faithful father for His glory.

Your honest words about feeling overwhelmed and inadequate for fatherhood are heard, and it is understandable to feel that the weight is too much and that you are not ready for such a responsibility.

Scripture speaks often about that very feeling of being overwhelmed by life and by circumstances we do not know how to handle. There is a prayer that says, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I, and that we can cry to God from the ends of the earth and know His ears are open and attentive to the cries of His people. You do not have to be in a special place or have perfect words. From wherever you are right now, you can cry out to Him.

That place of crying out is also a place of abiding. The psalm says he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. That is a picture of trust, of coming under His covering and finding strength not in yourself but in His presence. Feeling that fatherhood is too much for you is in one sense true for every person, because none of us has in ourselves the wisdom, patience and love that this calling requires. God does not expect you to manufacture it alone.

This is where the fear of the Lord becomes so practical. The Bible says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and the first step of wisdom. That word for fear does not mean a phobia or being terrified that God is waiting to hurt you. It means a reverent awe when you consider who He is, His greatness and His power and His love for you. When that awe fills your heart, it changes your desires, so that you fear hurting Him whom you love rather than living in dread of Him. And to fear the Lord in this way is to hate evil and to love what is good, to want to walk in His ways even when it is hard.

Fear in the ordinary sense and faith cannot live together in the same heart. When fear takes over it pushes faith out, and it often pushes us to make wrong decisions. When faith and the remembrance of the Lord take over, fear has to leave. One of the great cures for fear is simply to remember the Lord, that He is with you and that He will give you strength. You do not need to be afraid of being alone in this.

If God has entrusted a child to you, or may entrust one to you, that is a position He does give within His design. Marriage is His design for a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and children are given within that covering of commitment and love. Sex and living together belong within that covenant, not outside it. If you have stepped outside that design, the wise and loving step now is not to run from responsibility but to turn to Him, to hate what is wrong and to choose what is right, and to seek to do what honors Him going forward. That may mean seeking wise counsel, taking responsibility for the child, pursuing purity and commitment as God intends, and learning to walk as a man of understanding who seeks wise counsel.

God can take a heart that feels defeated and bring it to a place of strength and even song as you put trust into practice. Ask Him to forgive you where you have fallen short, to cleanse your heart and mind, and to teach you to walk in reverence before Him. Ask Him for wisdom for each next step, for provision, for maturity, and for the love that reflects His own love. He is able to prolong and steady your days as you walk with Him, and to be your confidence when you feel your foot might slip.

I am praying that God will meet you in this overwhelmed place, that you will hear His voice and know His nearness, that He will replace fear with faith as you remember Him, and that He will equip you to stand in the place He has given you with courage, love and faithfulness.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. We have continued to lift you up before the Lord concerning what you shared about not wanting to be a dad because you feel it is not your position and it is too much for you to carry.

We understand how heavy and overwhelming that burden can feel, and we have been praying for you to experience the peace and strength that only God can give. We pray in Jesus Name that the Lord calms your heart and gives you wisdom and clarity for the path ahead. We ask Him to show you that when we feel weak and overwhelmed He is our strength and that He equips those He calls. We pray He helps you to see His purpose and to know His presence with you, remembering the promise in Philippians 4:13 and that when our heart is overwhelmed He will lead us to the rock that is higher than we are according to Psalm 61:2.

We continue to stand with you in prayer for courage, for peace that passes understanding, and for trust in Gods grace to sustain you in every responsibility He allows.

If your request was answered and the Lord has given you peace or direction, please post a praise report and let us all know so we can rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered and you still carry this burden, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.
