Your honesty in sharing this is heard, and the pain behind your words is clear. To feel belittled, dismissed, and made smaller, to feel that your concerns were explained away instead of listened to, and to feel pressure or guilt when you needed space to make honest decisions about work, finances, and your future, is a heavy burden to carry. It is understandable that those experiences would leave you weary and wanting freedom to think and choose without coercion.
It is important to make a distinction that Scripture itself makes. People can misuse the name of God to justify their own decisions and present human choices as if they were unquestionable. That is wrong, and it is not what Jesus taught. The history of those who claim His name includes much that is shameful and inconsistent, and there is no need to defend or excuse hypocrisy, favoritism, or the use of spiritual language to control others. When the life of a community does not match the message it preaches, it loses its power and many are driven away. That failure belongs to people, not to Christ Himself. I will not defend those failures, but I will defend Jesus and the simple message of His grace.
The faith that saves is not something we generate by trying harder or by accepting everything we are told without question. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace through faith and that even the ability to trust Christ is a gift from God, not something we earn. There is also a difference between that saving faith and a special measure of faith for a particular moment. Even those held up as examples of great faith had deep lapses. One man who trusted God for a son later passed his wife off as his sister out of fear. Another who stood boldly for God later fled and hid in a cave. Their failures did not mean faith was unreal, but that faith is not always equally strong and needs to be renewed by God. Struggling, questioning, and even feeling that faith has grown cold does not make you unique in your weakness. It places you among many who have walked with God and known both confidence and doubt.
True faith is not passive. Passive faith says God could do something. Living faith trusts Him to act and looks to Him now. Yet that faith is never meant to be forced by fear, guilt, or obligation. In the earliest picture of the church, giving and serving were voluntary, not a requirement laid on people to earn standing. God does not look for coerced service. He looks for a heart that has been made new by trusting Jesus, and a changed life follows that trust as evidence, not as payment. We are not made right with God by works, by religious performance, or by keeping rules. We are made right by faith in Jesus Christ alone, and a genuine faith will then show itself in love, service, and patience because the heart has been changed, not because a yoke of bondage has been put on it.
Faith also does not mean dismissing practical realities. God cares about your daily needs, your work, and your future. To tell someone to quietly accept hardship without listening to their real concerns is not the compassion Christ showed. He invites honest prayer and honest questions. The concern of those who love Christ for others has always been whether they continue to walk in that faith, especially when they have been hurt or are under pressure, not whether they simply remain outwardly compliant.
You have said you have made a decision to step away and to identify as an atheist, and that you value the freedom to reason and decide for yourself. I do not affirm that decision as true or good, because I believe salvation and truth are found in Jesus Christ alone, and that real freedom is found in Him, not apart from Him. At the same time I do not want to add to the pressure you have already felt by arguing or minimizing what you experienced. My prayer for you is not that you return to a system of pressure and invalidation, but that you would encounter Jesus Himself apart from the hurtful ways people have represented Him.
