I am out of a job. I keep putting in applications but one or two things happen. Either I don't ever hear anything again or I get a rejection email. I feel so helpless and discouraged now.

I have the same problem. Look at your resume. I found out mine was outdated and the way it was written was wrong. I had several people look it over as I was rewriting it. Use keywords in it that is exactly worded in the job description. Don't use task-based as your job description, but how it was successful. Add achievements in it if you don't already. Even if it's not related to the job you are applying for because it shows the overall picture of who you are.
