I am doubting I can be free from lust

We hear the heaviness and hopelessness in your heart as you confess this struggle with lust and the doubt that you can ever be free, and we want you to know we are standing with you in prayer and we do not condemn you, for we know this battle is common to many and God sees your honesty and desires to bring you into freedom.

The Word of God is clear that lust is sin and must be turned from, for Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart, and we are commanded in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. This includes all sexual desire and activity outside of the lifelong marriage covenant between a man and a woman as God designed it, whether in thought, in looking, in pornography, or in fornication and adultery, and we lovingly rebuke this sin not to shame you but to call you to repentance because it harms your soul, your body, and your fellowship with God. Yet we also want to gently correct the lie that you are the most lustful person in the world and cannot escape, for that is despair speaking and not the truth of God, as it is written in 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

We want to encourage you that freedom is not only possible but promised in Jesus Christ, for you are not defined by this struggle and you are not beyond the reach of His grace. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9, and if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation 2 Corinthians 5:17. Sin will not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace Romans 6:14, and the way to walk in that freedom is to walk by the Spirit, and you won't fulfill the lust of the flesh Galatians 5:16. This means daily renewing your mind according to the Word, as Psalm 119:9 asks How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word, making a covenant with your eyes as Job did in Job 31:1, fleeing from youthful lusts and pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart 2 Timothy 2:22, removing sources of temptation, bringing your struggle into the light with a trusted mature Christian believer for accountability, and filling your heart and mind with Scripture and prayer instead of what feeds the flesh.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we must lovingly tell you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and can be saved and set free, for Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved Romans 10:9, for He died for your sins and rose again to give you a new heart and power to overcome.

We pray together for you now, Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one who feels bound and overwhelmed by lust and doubt. Lord, we ask You to forgive and cleanse as Your Word promises, create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him, break the chains of shame and lust and fill him with Your Holy Spirit. Give him strength to flee temptation, to make the way of escape that You provide, to guard his eyes and thoughts, and to walk by the Spirit each day. Help him to believe that with You all things are possible and that sin will not have dominion over him. Draw him close to Jesus, let him know he is loved, forgiven, and being made new, and surround him with godly fellowship that will encourage him toward purity and toward a future marriage that honors You if it is Your will. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, our only hope and deliverance, Amen.

We hear how heavy this feels for you right now, like lust has become your identity and there is no way out. When shame gets loud it is easy to believe you are the worst case and beyond help, but feeling stuck does not mean you are stuck forever.

What has helped us understand this struggle is that lust is more than attraction or appreciation of beauty. It is when a desire starts to matter more than God and pulls us to look for satisfaction outside His good design. Often underneath it are deeper longings for closeness, comfort, or relief that have gotten misdirected, and that is why trying harder in the moment rarely works by itself.

You do not have to fight this alone, and you were not meant to. One steady next step we have seen help is to bring it into the light with one trusted person of the same sex who will walk with you consistently. Not just when you have failed, but a regular check-in when you are clear-headed to talk honestly, to clear out what consistently trips you up, and to plan ahead for vulnerable moments before they come. A pastor or Christian counselor can also help you sort through what is driving the pattern and what real accountability could look like for you.

We are with you in this and we are praying for you.

Jesus, we lift our brother to You. You see his honest desire to be free and how tired he is. Give him hope that transformation is possible with You, give him courage to reach out and not hide, and give him wisdom for each next choice. Keep him close and lead him step by step. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest confession that you feel bound and unable to escape is itself a sign that grace is at work in you, for the heart that loves sin does not mourn it. To feel yourself the most lustful person in the world and to doubt deliverance is a heavy trial, but it is not a proof that you are beyond hope.

Scripture teaches that we must keep ourselves unspotted from the world, and that the Christian never expects to get any good from the world and its spots. The only hope of eternal life is by being parted from sin, for nothing that defiles shall enter heaven, and we have from day to day to fight against sin till it is utterly put away from us. That fight is not in your own strength. Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. He does not turn from you, nor change toward you when you cry for help.

You must know also that temptation itself, when hated and resisted, is not sin. Jesus was tempted as we are, and there is sweet comfort in that truth. A man may be fiercely assaulted and yet be free from sin if he loathes the temptation and cries, How dare you come to me, I hate this evil. In your worst and most bitter temptations you are to be pitied and prayed for, not simply blamed, when your soul is saying, O my Lord, keep me from everything that would take me away from Your love.

Therefore pray as our Lord taught us, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. This prayer asks that if possible we may be kept from severe encounters, and if we must be tried, that we may be delivered from the evil of it, that it may do us no hurt. God can cover you with an invisible shield, so that wherever you go you are guarded from the evil influences that are in the world in almost every place. Part of that guarding is wisdom to avoid what you know inflames lust. Divine grace will make you resolute not to go where you cannot honestly ask God to keep you pure, and to turn from every provision for the flesh.

Let no degree of natural or inherited depravity, or of depravity that has come from long continuance in sin, hinder you from praying for deliverance. You are not too far gone. You are a prisoner of hope, within reach of One who sets free from sin. No earthly power can bring real freedom to the soul, it is grace and grace alone that brings it by the blood of the Covenant. The Lord Jesus Christ saves His people from their sins, and His blood washes black sinners whiter than driven snow. Where that freedom comes, no form of bondage can keep the soul a slave.

When the Lord sets His people free from the guilt and power of sin, He delivers them from the lash of sin and gives the spirit of liberty. That deliverance is immediate and unconditional when you look away from your feebleness to His strength and from your sinfulness to His blood. Though you may be a long time before you see the outer gate fully, you shall see it, for He who has begun a good work will not leave you in the prison house.

So turn again to Christ alone for salvation and for purity. Confess your sin plainly, ask for forgiveness through His blood, and ask for power to live unspotted, keeping the gift of sex within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman as God ordained. Pray daily, Lead us not into temptation, flee from what tempts you, fill your mind with Scripture, and walk in open fellowship with other believers who can help you stand. He is able to keep you from falling, and He will not despise a trembling prayer for a clean heart.
