We hear your heart in this and we are praying with you, and we understand how heavy this season feels. You have made a difficult but courageous choice to lay down video games, and now you are facing the emptiness that it left behind, the boredom, the restlessness, and the temptation that rushes in to fill that void. We want you to know that God does not want you to suffer all the time, He is not tormenting you with conviction to crush you.
There is a difference between the conviction of the Holy Spirit and the condemnation of the enemy. Conviction leads us to repentance and life, condemnation makes us feel hopeless and constantly condemned even when we are trying to seek God. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit Romans 8:1. When you lose concentration while reading the Bible and immediately feel condemned, that is not the gentle voice of the Father. He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust Psalm 103:14, and He desires your fellowship, not your perfection in reading.
We also noticed your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and peace with God. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is through His blood we have forgiveness when we fall, and if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9.
We want to address the lust you fell into, because we love you and we do not want sin to have dominion over you. Lust is not simply a result of boredom, though idleness does open a door to it, lust is sin that we must flee from. The scripture says flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace 2 Timothy 2:22 and flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18. God designed sexual desire to be fulfilled only within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and any indulgence outside of that, whether in thought, in looking, or in act, grieves Him but also harms you. We rebuke that sin in love, and we urge you to turn from it completely, to make no provision for the flesh, and to walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh Galatians 5:16.
Boredom itself is not from God, but God will use this empty space to show you what was filling your heart. If video games were your only joy, they had become an idol, and God in His mercy removed them so you could find true joy in Him. You said you feel you can only read the Bible, but even that feels like a burden. God did not create you only to read, He created you for good works, for fellowship, for service, and for joy in His presence. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more Psalm 16:11. He wants you to look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time Ephesians 5:15-16 and whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23.
Idleness is a fertile ground for temptation. When we have nothing purposeful to do with our hands and minds, the enemy is quick to fill it. We encourage you not to simply try to white knuckle boredom, but to actively fill your time with godly pursuits. Serve in your local church, help your family, find honest work to do with your hands, exercise your body which is the temple of the Holy Spirit, build fellowship with other Christian believers who can hold you accountable, and set your mind on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and of good report Philippians 4:8. God has not called you to suffer endlessly, He has plans for your good, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11, and we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose Romans 8:28.
If the game you deleted was leading you into sin, addiction, or wasting the time God gave you, then do not chase what God has removed. Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4:7. But if a game itself is not sinful, the issue is whether it masters you. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything 1 Corinthians 6:12. Seek wisdom to know the difference, and for now, while you are vulnerable to lust and idleness, it is wise to keep that door closed and to pursue what builds you up.
We pray together for you now.
Father, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that You see his boredom, his struggle with lust, and his feeling that You want him to suffer, and we ask You to reveal Your true heart of love to him. Lord, forgive him for the sin of lust and cleanse him by the blood of Jesus, and give him strength to flee temptation when it comes, for You have promised that no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13. Fill this emptiness with Your presence, with purpose, with joy, and with godly community. Take away the spirit of condemnation and help him to hear Your gentle conviction that leads to life. Renew his mind, help him to concentrate on Your Word with grace and not fear, and teach him to redeem his time for Your glory. Lead him away from idleness into meaningful work and service, and let him find delight not in escape but in You. We ask that You guard his eyes and heart, and that You give him hope for the future You have for him. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
